What's the over/under on # of games before Lewis goes back on the IL? He grabbed at his hamstring multiple times last night just trying to hit. I'll say 10 games.
 





Kirby Puckett had four hits in his MLB debut as the Twins beat the first-place Angels 5-0 in Anaheim on this date in 1984.

Puckett, hitting leadoff, grounded out to short to start the game. He collected singles in his next four at-bats, becoming the sixth player in American League history to debut with a four-hit performance.

Frank Viola pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout.

Kirby collected 16 hits in his first seven major league games, hitting .485. He finished the season with 165 hits in 128 games, batting .296 and finishing third to Seattle’s Alvin Davis and Mark Langston in American League Rookie of the Year balloting. (Minnesota’s Tim Teufel came in fourth.)

22-year-old Twins catcher Wilson Ramos also went 4-for-5 in his MLB debut on May 2, 2010. The following night, he went 3-for-4 with a double, becoming the third player in MLB history with seven hits in his first two games, and the first since Nanny Fernandez in 1942.

I like the baseball card you picked out. That's his true first big league card. He was not expected to be a big part of the 1984 team so was not part of the main card sets that year. But Fleer included Puckett in the 84 updated series. Topps Traded did not because they only included traded players in their updated set.

Last year I was able to find one on ebay that was in decent shape and not over priced. It's my favorite care of my whole collection.

I looked at Kirby's Baseball Reference page and noticed he made the All Star Game in his final 10 seasons, thinking that might be quite rare.

Then I looked at Cal Ripken Jr.

He made it in each of his last 19 seasons, almost doubling Puckett. Cal's started in 1983, 3 seasons before Kirby's 1st All Star Game. It ended in 2001, just weeks before Kirby was inducted into Cooperstown.

Well the strikeout numbers are really high but everything has been really good. He's about the only exciting thing about this team (other than maybe Pablo and Duran). Healthy Buck is fun to watch.

He is fun to watch but he is trending towards a 10 to 1 K to BB ratio. That’s not good.

In the moment, even as a Twins fan, I wouldn't have rated it #1, with only 1 run 10 innings. Heck at the time I would have said Puckett's Catch of the Plexiglass and Walk-Off HR in the B11th the night before was a better game.

Even now Red Sox/Mets G6 '86 WS with Reds/Red Sox G6 '75 WS, all 3 a case can be made for at the Best. MLB Network put it right in between those 2.

In hindsight watching replays, one gets reminded of the great theater of it all with the several jams that Morris got out of unscathed. Letting a pitcher go 10 just doesn't happen anymore.

Also as time goes by, you realize that the pitcher that matched Morris' performance until he was not allowed anymore, was also a cinch Hall of Famer. John Smoltz. Additionally, the Braves went on to have a dominant decade, though just 1 World Series Trophy.

Without that game, Morris does not make it to Cooperstown. Without that weekend, Puckett likely would have had to wait much longer, perhaps waiting for a Veteran's Committee election.
 





The biggest surprise is how bad the Orioles are this year, especially offensively. Their brain trust is going with the Twins strategy of the mid 2000's: do nothing to surround their good, young talent with free agents or through trades.
 


That might have been the best win of the year in my book. Ober was in trouble all day, but for the most part, worked around it. Bader walking, stealing 2nd and then scoring on a real clutch 2-out hit by Lee is just good team baseball.

On the bright side, the Twins are just 2 GB from the last AL Wild Card slot currently occupied by the Sac A's.

They almost made the ALCS last year and they still have the best starting pitcher in the AL, in my opinion. I think KC is more complete, but the Tigers have lots of good pieces.

There younger players are playing very well right now. Guys that have largely been underwhelming going into this year: Mize, Olson, Torkelson. And Baez actually has a heartbeat this year. I'm not sure they will keep scoring runs at the pace they are but their pitching is really good overall.
