One would think that former Gopher assistant Dave Boos (and brother of UMD coach Jim) would be the frontrunner. There just aren't any "name" coaches available. Unless they can persuade Hambly. Or Sheffield. Or Keegan even.

You have to know Sheffield is hot on the Kennedy trail. Some real talent at Florida and they need to act fast to keep it there.

Kennedy would certainly solve any questions fans have about opposite next year. Although, aren't already at the 18 player maximum?

On the flip side, WI and Neb have recently signed portal opposites, so I don't think we need to worry about her ending up there. Penn State, on the other hand...

Personally, I hope they stay put. I hate this trend of teams imploding when coaches leave.

I'm a bit surprised that wisco hasn't already announced a Kennedy signing (sarcasm, but based on reality).

If she wants to come here we'll figure the roster out.

Ryan Theis was hired to replace Mary. Nice guy, very happy for him!

I honestly think Boos could have had at least as much success as Theis had he left Florida for a mid-major. But he stuck with the Gators. Sure seems like a slap in the face to me.

If Kennedy Martin ends up at Wisconsin, Penn State, Nebraska or Texas, I am done with this sport. I know. No great loss. But I just wanted to go on record. I also know other sports are worse, but I don't pay any attention to them.

I agree with Hoolio.

Maybe the question is - can MN be a championship contender without resorting to becoming an all star team of portal players? I truly hope so. (you know, the anti-Badgers)

The answer to your question is no. Cook is a good but wouldn’t say he’s an elite coach. Definitely not enough to overcome talent deficiencies

Who are the elite coaches? Seems like the ones we like to think of as elite still have needed the best players to win national championships.

Part of being an elite coach is being able to get those players. Cooks recruiting is okay, not great because he isn’t getting those elite players.

Um maybe he doesn’t have a $$$ to get those players. It’s one thing when it’s coach against coach and system to get players. Money changes a lot of that. No idea what the volleyball NIL budget is but we maybe aren’t offering as much as others.

Confirmed on VT that Penn St landed Kennedy Martin. Wonder if that means Caroline J will enter the portal. Shame she was over recruited at Nebraska and now Penn St too even after being a big part of their championship run last season.

I guess (R)uffda! is done.

Sad to see such a big fan of volleyball as Ruffda was at one time become so disillusioned with the state of affairs that s/he completely disappears from volleyball chat boards. S/He had a lot of good insight over the years. I’d like to know when s/he started to see the writing on the wall. Was it the advent of unlimited transfers or once it became apparent that certain coaches didn’t care about development and were starting to go all in on the portal in their quest for a national title?

It's all the transfers. Money has ruined the sport, just as it has pro sports. I just can't get into cheering for a uniform and I REALLY can't get into being a fan of the Washington Generals.

So, yes. I'm done. But it was a fun 35-year run. Mostly.

Was there white smoke involved?

I hear ya, Ruffda, but I'm going to hang on. If MN's coach ever becomes a portal hound (a la Sheffield), that's my red line.

I don't believe you have to become an all-star portal hound like a few of these programs are known to be. Hugh never did and he certainly took us a lot further than we have gone under KCook. Doesn't a Head Coach have to be able to present a good case for the program he/she is over in order to get a little more needed financing to land a top player or two? Or am I just full of it thinking that? Because I just feel that was a strength of Hugh and not of KCook.

Players wanted to play for Hush to get access to USA team style play and the international game. Look at how many Gophers were on the USA team in the late 2010's.

Sure that played a huge role in many top players decision to come here. But I do believe we are now seeing the big difference in these two coaches.

Up until now KCook not making any big move is saying a lot and not in a good way. He has to start now because Minnesota is no longer "A DRAW" for big named players since Hugh left. Waiting to develop an entire team or hope "the chemistry" is there is not the answer either. Sure that satifies many fans but I am not one of those who is willing to bet on the success of that strategy.

I beg to differ. I will misspell most of these names, but I think most programs would take Taylor, Kinney, Hoeck and McCrossen. Gophers are getting some good top talent in there Freshman classes. Let’s see what 27 brings.
