2 college basketball teams are out-spending the field in men’s transfer portal, and the numbers are wild

None of this makes sense. These players are making millions to play for whatever University. Do any of these guys even attend classes? Next thing to do would be to form their own pro league, but why would they do something stupid like that and be like a G league. They can make much more money off of NIL or boosters or wherever. I know i'm not telling anybody anything they don't already know, but its almost like every school now is just renting players to play basketball and like i said probably don't even attend classes. It's like me hosting a party and i hire a band for entertainment. lol This is what college sports are these days. I know next few years things will be tweaked, but right now things are a joke.

One thing he said was something about a kid who might be a late first round/early 2nd round NBA pick and why would he come out when NIL will pay him more than being pick at that spot. Thus you have kids moving around so much who ever will pay the kid more.

Dick Vitale has criticized the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals on college basketball, saying they're "out of control" and have turned the sport into "Chalk City," where top programs dominate due to NIL spending. He has called for the NCAA to address the issue, suggesting the current system is "a farce" and pushes college sports into "PROS for revenue sports,". Vitale also believes the transfer portal, coupled with NIL, creates "total chaos" and lacks stability.

Here are some specific quotes and ideas from Vitale's statements:
  • "Come on what is going on is totally out of control – are you serious some schools in hoops will have $20 MILLION dollars in the NIL to distribute – oh yes a farce college sports has become – please @NCAA change in the NCAA booklet welcome to the PROS for revenue sports."

  • "Not one team, mid-major, has a chance anymore, really. Because of the dollars — the NIL dollars — the big guys are going to absolutely dominate."

  • "I think we got chaos going on in college basketball. Total chaos. The stability is out of whack. It's wild west"

  • "The leaders do zilch to bring any stability – it is absolutely INSANE with the revenue sports."

  • "But the NCAA student athletes – at the power conferences it is PRO SPORTS – totally agree it is wacky!"

Almost none of these deals are actually NIL deals so...

(we need to start calling it what it is)

My guess is that it is negotiable based on the size of the deal that gets struck. They might get 20% of a 150k deal and take 10 or 15% of a million dollar deal. The athletes have a choice on agents so I am sure those commission rates a competitive. A search of the subject suggests a 10-20% range whereas NBA contracts run 3-5%.
It’s all so transactional now…where have I heard that before? 🤔
