Nolan Groves

If he's visiting Texas Tech the Goph's probably don't have the money to pay an unproven true freshman like that. Better places to put your money.

Funny how quickly this stuff changes. First he's perceived as not good enough to play in the BigTen and then he dumps the Ivy League for a power four with huge NIL. I guess time will tell but if he's good enough for TT it seems like a big miss by the local team.

Maybe true but seems like everyone else missed on him too. I mean where was Wisconsin? LOL

Posted this on one of the other threads. If you're looking for connections at a place or more $s, or if you're promised some playing time, hard to get him to the U. Why come here and get paid less to be 10-11 on the team behind kids who have already played multiple years of college hoops? If you have a connection to a program (TT), and can get paid more, I'd advise my kid to take the money. You can always transfer later.

I've seen this kid play over several years. Classic late bloomer physically. As a sophomore, he was 5'10. As a junior, good, but 6'1-2. As a senior, 6'4-5" and really filled out. Missed some of the AAU exposure due to the growth stuff. He's athletic, but not overly fast; can shoot it, but not a bomber; just a really solid player who is physically overpowering in high school, and knows how to score. There are other kids locally who score and have size (Wagner kid from Champlin) who just kinda fly under the radar and then explode, but with the transfer portal at high majors attracting the most attention, kids who are in the 200-400 range ranking wise get lost a bit. This has happened a lot in football too. Why recruit a high school kid to sit for a year, when you can fill your roster with a 22 year old with lots of experience at a mid-major?

I think most kids in this situation would go mid-major and try and dominate, then move up (hundreds of examples of this at this point), but some kids may be ok taking some money and sitting for a year or two.

Very true on everyone missing. It just makes you want to yell some expletives every time some lower star recruit in our own backyard slips out and blows up because we get hung up on higher rated ones.

St. Thomas missed too for that matter.

Seems it's TT, MN, and IA in the mix.

Twitter tells me that his AAU trainer is on TT's staff.

Seems unlikely he is guaranteed playing time at Texas tech and is a 10th or 11th man here.

First off, most coaches don't recruit based on stars, if they think a kid can make an impact they will recruit them regardless of what the recruiting services say.

In basketball you have a really limited number of spots to work with so you have to prioritize some recruits over others. Fans may not like it and get mad when a guy gets "missed" but coaches have their reasons for who they do or do not go after in recruiting. Now those coaches may absolutely be wrong on who they target but they have their reasons.

As for Groves - looks like Niko offered, he is late to the game since he is new to the area, tough to say what he would have done had he been here the past few seasons.

Niko is not late. The kid reopened his recruitment and it looks like he’s considering 3 schools, TT, MN and WI. He’s updated his 247 page and reposting stories on Twitter. Looks like he’s enjoying the new attention and going to visit at least TT and MN.
