High praise for Perich

Also interesting seeing Thieneman on the list. I recall the Gophers going after him pretty hard out of high school. They definitely seem to find good safeties.

2. Koi Perich, Minnesota

The Golden Gophers lost Tyler Nubin, one of college football’s best safeties, to the NFL and immediately found a viable replacement in Perich. The true freshman’s five interceptions this past season trailed only Xavier Watts among FBS safeties. His 88.9 PFF overall grade ranked seventh, and he was one of only seven safeties in college football who earned 80.0-plus grades both in coverage and run defense.

Like Downs, Perich doubles as a dangerous return man and is athletic enough to win at free safety while also being physical enough to succeed in the box.

Go Gophers!!

High praise indeed. Thanks for posting.

I’m knocking on wood as I typed this, but it would be the most Minnesota thing ever if he hurt himself playing offense…..

I’m so impressed with Koi on X (Twitter). He always responds to anyone posting that they have a recruitment trip upcoming to MN and tells them to come and get developed. He also congratulates every recruit that commits. I believe he truly loves this program and is doing everything he can to recruit. He is a class act and great for the program!

Safety: Koi Perich, Minnesota

The Golden Gophers lost one of college football’s best safeties in Tyler Nubin and immediately found another in Perich. The true freshman’s five interceptions this past season trailed only Xavier Watts among FBS safeties, while his 88.9 PFF grade was seventh. He was also one of only seven safeties in America who earned 80-plus grades both in coverage and in run defense.

Like Downs, Perich doubles as a dangerous return man and is athletic enough to win and free safety while simultaneously being physical enough to succeed in the box as well.

Shouldn’t we have 2 Sophomore safeties on this list?
Brown definitely gets overshadowed by Perich but super excited to see what the two of them can do this year with another off season under their belts.

Potentially one of the best safety duos in the country and both guys are just sophomores which is crazy.

I don't see Koi playing nearly as many snaps on offense as Hunter did. Safety is more demanding on the body than CB.
Think it depends on the D and the opponent's offense. Any team that runs sweeps, etc. may have the corner sticking their nose into run D support often.

Safeties rarely go that high. I guess a lot depends on how he does on offense and how fast a 40 he runs. If he runs under 4.55, maybe? He played at 190-195 last year, Im guessing he will be 205 as a JR.
I think if NFL teams see him as more than a Safety on D and like what he brings as a returner, he'll be a high pick.
