SJSU center Robert Vaihola commits to Gophers!!

Some transfers, especially when essentially replacing 10+ guys, are hard to evaluate until all the pieces come together. It looks like as a 20ish min a game guy he'd be a very nice get, if we end up relying on him for 30+ a night might be tough.

If this was the last regime it'd be terrified that this was the last piece, I trust Niko to build a better overall roster. Also he's seen him plenty in person so figure he knows his game.

We have a number of scholarships available and I would have welcomes Big Frank back as well, but Vaihola looks like a significantly more well-rounded player than Frank Mitchell. He is a more active defender (steals/blocks), better with ball movement, and a better free throw shooter.

Would prefer another center, even if he is the starter. We don't know what we have in Grove, if anything, yet.
I wouldn’t be surprised if another guy between 6’7 and 6’9 signs. Seems to be the build Niko likes. I wouldn’t be surprised of our 3-5 were all basically the same height lol

It probably works fine unless another Zach Edy comes along.

I'd qualify it as a great get.
One team recruited him based on 247. He developed into a starter with a solid stat line. 27.5 minutes a game and 2.3 fouls per game.

Signed with Fresno State and played 22 games as a freshmen shooting 76% from the floor
Sophomore Year transferred to San Jose St. played 35 games.
Junior Year Redshirted
Redshirt Shirt Junior started all 31 games going 7.5 pts. 7.5 rb. and 2 assists per game. Led team in 53% from the floor.

That's a great portal pick up of someone Niko is familiar with and sees fitting right in.

Looks like DJ Burns from NC State’s Final Four team. Definitely a “softer” 260 lbs than John Thomas! No hops. All position and strength. Looks like a nice passer. Will stamina be an issue?

Just finished the rest of his highlights. Definitely a “below the rim” player. I can’t remember seeing another big man highlight reel without a single dunk. The good news is he’s broad as a barn. If he pins an opponent deep they can’t get around that backside. He’s got good footwork and finishes with either hand. So many lefty shots that he may be left handed (though without a single jumper on tape, it’s hard to know).

Searched on T- Rank, looks to have one dunk in his career.

True...but the ball always seemed to be in Bobby Jackson's hands when that game was on the line, and he was money.
Miles Tarver and Courtney James brought the team average down five percentage points, and I don't think I'm kidding.

Keep building to dominate the backboard. I like the dimensionality of the team. Wingspan. Height. Rebounding ability. Niko is building a nicely balanced roster with plethora of skills.
