Dinkytown athletes:
Thank you for your continued support and welcome to all of our new members. I’m excited to share that yesterday we set records for: number of individual men’s basketball donations, number of new men’s basketball memberships, and number of upgraded men’s basketball memberships!

On the TGB podcast they mentioned DTA should work with the administration to do a "if we raise X amount of dollars for NIL the final 4 banners go back up" drive. I could not be more in favor of this!
Listen, I love this idea as a fundraiser. But Coyle should get off his ass demand the NCAA lift these ridiculous sanctions, and if they won’t. Do it anyway and dare them to sue…They won’t.

Do the sanctions actually say they can't hang the banners?

"yesterday we set records for basketball donations..." um...DTA started during Ben's reign. Was the previous record one?
Being snarky...happy we are off to a good start with Niko.

For those that don’t remember:

NCAA

edit
Following its investigation, the NCAA issued the following sanctions to the university:[5]

  • Four years of probation until October 23, 2004;
  • A reduction of five scholarships in total until the 2003–04 season;
  • A reduction of six paid visits by recruits until the 2002–03 season;
  • Vacating all appearances in the 1994, 1995, and 1997 NCAA Tournaments and 1996 and 1998 National Invitational Tournaments, as well as individual records of those student-athletes found to have committed academic fraud; and
  • Show-cause penalties for Haskins and Newby (both until October 23, 2007) and Gangelhoff (until October 23, 2005).
Shortly afterward, the Big Ten stripped the Gophers of the 1997 regular season title and vacated all of the Gophers' victories from 1993 to 1999.

I continue to believe Ben was the absolute worst advocate for his own program and his lack of NIL $$$ was due to this also. If Niko can win , the $$ will come
This has been my position for some time. It’s not that the U administration supported him so poorly, he was either unwilling or unable to fundraisers and build excitement for his program.

Semi related point. I have taught at a couple of the Breck/Blake style schools in the country and the head of school position is much much much more of a chief fundraiser than somebody who has some grand vision of education for the school. I wonder how many parallels there are between this and basketball coaches going forward.

Truth. If the last three years has taught us anything is that the NCAA has no more mandate and is a powerless organization. About time.

Any word from the MacMillan, Cargill, or McKnight families? Walzer, Belzer, Luther, or Barnett families coming in with auto leases for student athletes? Get the kids out for a day of car-shopping and autograph signings from your favorite Gophers?

Maybe, call Viking Towing at (651) 428-**** to see if they'll be interested in changing their name to Gopher Towing. Perhaps, we could start a petition to reduce our Minnesota state income tax rates so that we can support want we want here -- competitive Gopher MBB and FB programs!

There definitely is a parallel, except that it is with Cunningham and Coyle. They each really only have one (huge) job. In Cunningham's case it's to raise money for the university. In Coyle's case it's to raise money for the athletic dept.

On that same podcast Ryan James told a typical story about Sid looking out for Sid. Sad.

This reminded me of a couple summers ago, sitting next to a starting corner on Texas' football team on a flight. We visited most of the flight, talking about who he played against in HS basketball, be it during the season, or AAU. He also shared pic's of his leased cars, AND owned cars. I was shocked at the number and make(s). He wasn't hiding anything, as at this point, it was perfectly legal.

Thinks move so quickly and are ever changing with NIL.

Some quick things to think about but I haven't looked into.
  • NIL is on top of revenue sharing and doesn't have a limit.
  • There will be a NIL clearing house. Not sure what the specifics are
  • Supposedly a crackdown on actual services rendered for NIL.
  • Ruling still has to be finalized on the revenue sharing
  • B1G conference is having some form of contract for players

Anything else that people have heard?

I gave to DTA yesterday. I felt the symbolic nudge of a new era.

I honestly don't know the answer to this, maybe not allowed, is there any reason with 50,000 students you couldn't slide in a $500 sports fee into the tuition. That's $25 million/yr. Use half and put the other half into a fund that can generate returns. Every year the fund grows and the returns become larger.

My son starts college in the fall. The cost to attend a Big 10 state school (Ohio State in my case) as a non-resident is insane. I wouldn’t want to have another fee tacked onto an already inflated bill, especially if it’s simply shifting my money to another student. I’d draw the line there.

I don't know the legal answer to that question, but my gut tells me that charging a students a fee that essentially winds up in the pockets of student athletes would be a big no-no.

The political fallout would be terrible. There are already extra fees on certain classes taken for additional software needed. Taking $500 out of parents/students to pay other students to play a game while ignoring brilliant students in other fields would lead to an even greater revolt against sports at the U.

I swear in my undergrad days at the U (early 2000s) there was some sort of athletics fee. There was a stink about it since not everyone cares about sports. This was on top of technology fees, etc.

Also, this was 20 years ago and I could be totally making this up 😂
