All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

And what would be hilarious is the same people hating the idea now would use it as proof the U hates basketball if he gets hired somewhere else and is successful.
Yep. Piggybacking on your other post where you listed just a handful of the attacks hurled at Coyle recently....if I was someone in a high profile position like that I would just make sure I had someone on staff who could let me know if there was something actually important being floated on social media and message boards but you wouldn't catch me checking any of them myself. Not worth it because no matter what you do or say....someone is going to be pissed off about it online.

You see more and more celebrities deleting social media accounts or steering clear of it because it is so toxic.

I don't have any issue with the job Coyle has done, and how he represents the U. He made a really good hire with Fleck, missed on Ben Johnson, but at the time who could even say the decision was his. Everyone jokes about him, but my guess is he's a hoops junkie like most of us on here, and he has the track record of being at hoops schools. He's a selection committee member and probably a strong contributor on that committee.

Think about how many AD's out there are super visible. A few but not many. If he bears specific criticism, it's not being able to navigate NIL. The coach and the AD have a role there, and Gophers hoops program has been really poor and slow to adapt.
Coyle isn't great in front of the cameras.

He needs to get this hire right and unlike some here I think he will.

He would be fine. I think for fans he is a good enough hire to give real hope. For bandwagon I don’t think it is big enough to really build excitement. Will probably stop the bleeding for a year or two but won’t pack the house until they win.

Only a few hires would pack the house right away though
With the way things are with transfers, NIL and revenue sharing, why don't you think he could win next year? By "win" I mean 4-5 more than this year...

We finally have something to look forward to following the tournament / whenever CSU gets knocked out. The fact that he's a Minneapolis native is an added bonus, especially if we are able to get a guy like Terrence Brown, Jr. Hopefully Frank the Tank stays. I know TC hit the portal but I'd really like to see what he can do for us. Hopefully he would decide to come back too

now that this thread is inching close to 10 pages and the last 3 pages have multiple pundits saying the Medved deal is done, let me throw out a new twist. Who do we get to be the GM? Steph Curry is an assistant GM at Davidson- do we go that route and get Trent Tucker involved? or does Niko reach to his past and bring Tim Miles back to the Big Ten? or if Davidson has a Curry, we can go that route and talk to Eric Curry

Miles would be really good in that role, but he's still coaching. I do think they need a GM or similar to help on the NIL side.

Let’s be completely honest here. The Medved steam is entirely fan and media generated and not based on any actual source. Coyle doesn’t operate that way and keeps discussions entirely secretive. People are just saying it makes sense because of the local connections. That in no way means Coyle will prioritize that. Honestly I hope that isn’t how he is basing his decision because we did that and we know how that worked out. Medved may very well be the guy but I have hope it’s because he’s a good coach and the right one for this job not because of the local connections.

I don't think so this time. Something was leaked, as I don't think the Strib would run a piece on pure speculation. There must be some credible source(s) driving this.
It could be "stratigery" from Coyle to keep the players and recruit's calm about their expectations for next year.

This is so tired. It's not because of the local connections. The only men's basketball coach we have had hired in the last 40 years due to local connections is Ben. Every program that has an opening lists a bunch of candidates with local connections - just look at Iowa's list of candidates in their various media sources, or Virginia's, etc. They all do it because those are the initial most logical.

All that said, Niko has been a highly successful coach. He just won the MWC, and has been winning consistently. He has been talked to about the Virginia gig, the Iowa gig, etc.

Coyle is going to hire the person who he things is the best for this job, not who the media wants - and if he did that he could never please anyone because what each media member wants is different. There are people all over the country praising Niko and the job he has done at CSU over the years - the offense he runs, defense, player development, etc.

And, the steam on Niko is more than media right now. It's happening.

Speculation and made up information is what Strib does. It could very well be Medved but highly doubtful there is a legit source.

Ben was hired because of his local AAU relationships. Pitino was not liked. All I’m saying is basing any decision on that again would be a mistake and I doubt the so called source is legit and the media is just using that to make a prediction.

Great post. The Niko pick is growing on me. I like what I saw last night offensively and on the defensive end as well. They slowed Degenhart in a way that Pitino and New Mexico (with better athletes) could not. I really like coaches that take away the other team's go to guy and make him less efficient. Down the stretch that's what other coaches did to Garcia. He still scored, but it was tougher and on more shots.

I wanted a big name, "whoa, we got him!!??" coach but Niko is able to do this if the U gets fully behind him.

It’s why Coyle had to reset the program this offseason going into revenue sharing

It could also be coming from the Medved/Thorson side of things.

Considering he was passed on last time I think it’s more to do with his success over the last 4 seasons. Being Minnesotan is a bonus.

This is my first inclination, BUT we DID hear Ben Johnson steam in the days leading up to his hire, so there's a precedent.

Suddenly, Medved has become at least a medium-sized name. March success will do that for a guy.
