All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

I would have two questions if Medved ends up as the hire.

1) Would his record be good enough if he didn't have those neat "Minnesota connections"? Three out of the last four years in the MWC (if he makes it this year) is petty good. Certainly he has a far superior resume than Ben Johnson. Some of the names thrown out here were never realistic.

2) Can he get us to the middle of the B1G? We need to stop competing with Nebraska/Rutgers/Penn State/Northwestern year in and year out.

I won't be ecstatic over this hire but I won't have the same reaction as I did four years ago.

If he wasn't from MN would anyone here be interested in Joerger? We have to get over the MN connection fantasy
Yeah....I guess there are lots of guys who have coached multiple CBA champions as well as held multiple NBA jobs (and did well) and who have won multiple NBA coach of the month awards who want to coach the Gophers. We should just move down the list.....SMH

I'd take Joerger over Medved anyday.

His name has been thrown out for Virginia and Iowa as well. I think some are down playing this because of his Minnesota connection but this guy can coach. Maybe not the flashy name but similar to Dawn P or Jerry Kill, just a solid choice.

I do think that even absent the “he’s one of us” motif, he would be strongly considered. Multiple stops that grew programs. Consistently successful seasons in a high level mid major. Clearly enough ability to identify talent to be at the top of the league .

I have a feeling Medved will be on a lot of team's radars that have job openings this cycle. 3 trips to the NCAA tournament in the last 4 seasons is going to get him noticed.

We could do a whole lot worse.....Medved could be a really solid hire.

I think that is a good point. If others are sniffing around him as a candidate, that is certainly more intriguing. I wasn't a big fan of his as a candidate four years ago, but three tournaments in four years out of the MWC is nothing to sneeze at now.

Medved's Colorado State team almost certainly has to be aware their coach is rumored to be a top candidate at Minnesota and elsewhere. Medved somehow got his team to focus and dominate the MWC Tournament Championship. Without the title, despite their surge to close the season they were on the outside looking in to be selected for the NCAA Tournament.
Impressive coaching...not easy to get your team to perform in those difficult distracting circumstances.

Not sure I agree. Every player on the team wants to get to the tournament. Since this is now an openly professional sport, all of the players are fully aware of its business aspects. Player and coach movement is a constant, which means it's no longer really a distraction.

Bingo. This isn’t the “we are a family” world that used to be advertised. These are professional athletes looking for their next opportunity and winning is essential to drawing attention to the next suitor.

I realize I cite Coyle’s salary fairly frequently, but why the hell do you need to pay someone $1.4M annually to make the easiest, most predictable and uninspired hire he could make? I could offer the Gophers job to a career mid-major coach with local ties and he would accept it. There’s zero inspiration with this guy. He’s pure programmed technocrat.
Because hiring coaches is only one aspect of the job? They would have to pay me twice that just to deal with irrational fans like us.

Just in the past two weeks:

Coyle sucks cause he hasnt fired Ben (after every loss )
Coyle sucks because he is obviously using the media to drum up support for Ben
Coyle sucks cause other teams fired their coaches and we are waiting so we aren't firing Ben
Coyle Sucks because of how he fired Ben
Coyle sucks because we haven't hired anyone yet
Coyle sucks because the media and fans are naming people I don't like
I don't trust Coyle to make the decision

And I'm sure I'm missing something. Look I'm no Coyle defender or anything but come on.

Then we should be glad you aren't making the decisions. A hire like that gets Coyle canned and I bet season tix tank. You have no idea if he can do the non-coaching aspects of the job let alone coaching college style ball.

But if he is so great he must be atop everyone's list right? Lots of open jobs out there!

And what would be hilarious is the same people hating the idea now would use it as proof the U hates basketball if he gets hired somewhere else and is successful.

I was very critical of the Ben Johnson hire because he hadn't gone through the HC gauntlet prior to being named HC here, while Niko may not be a homerun he has gone through the HC gauntlet at 3 different programs. Niko would be considered a very solid hire even if he wasn't an alum.

I don't have any issue with the job Coyle has done, and how he represents the U. He made a really good hire with Fleck, missed on Ben Johnson, but at the time who could even say the decision was his. Everyone jokes about him, but my guess is he's a hoops junkie like most of us on here, and he has the track record of being at hoops schools. He's a selection committee member and probably a strong contributor on that committee.

Think about how many AD's out there are super visible. A few but not many. If he bears specific criticism, it's not being able to navigate NIL. The coach and the AD have a role there, and Gophers hoops program has been really poor and slow to adapt.

You sure are good at arguing against positions nobody has taken.

I think Niko would be a good hire. Often times you get a name or two out there and it’s purposely put out there to distract. Probably not the case this time, but I can’t help but think that based on other coach searches. However, now that I think about it I think the Fleck rumors started fairly early. We’ll see. The more I read about Niko the better he seems.

He would be fine. I think for fans he is a good enough hire to give real hope. For bandwagon I don’t think it is big enough to really build excitement. Will probably stop the bleeding for a year or two but won’t pack the house until they win.

Only a few hires would pack the house right away though
