COYLE FIRES BEN JOHNSON!!!!!!

The timing of the firing was fine. Its kinda sad this is the most nationally relevant the program has been in the last 4 years and it came at 1:19 in the morning.
The timing of the new hire is all that matters. He fired Ben quick. That was a really good start. Now get this done in less than two weeks. I'd like to see the new coach announced on the 24th...assuming that our next coach is in the NCAAs but doesn't make the Sweet 16. If we have a great coach that is not in the tournament- then early next week should be the target. He should have his man all but signed right now.

As a Minnesota sports fan of over 50 years, your statement makes me very nervous.
Beat me too it.....a Minnesota sports fan should know better than to list out a bunch of positives like that....bad things can only follow....we are screwed. :)

Get over it. You bitched about the coach his whole career and now you bitch that he got fired as soon as possibly after the season ended!

Obviously, you're more interesting in just Bitching than what is going on with the program.

Coach P was hired the day after her NCAA loss. They waited a couple extra days for Motzko because his team choked in the NCAAs or else that would've been the day after as well.

Per the CBS report:

"Minnesota has ranked in the bottom two or three in the Big Ten in NIL resources for the duration of Johnson's tenure, according to industry sources. Johnson and his staff were responsible for raising nearly all of Minnesota's NIL budget — approximately $2 million for this past season, per a source. The team was handcuffed all the more by key losses in the portal last spring, including point guard Elijah Hawkins (Texas Tech) and power forward Pharrel Payne (Texas A&M), who got much larger financial opportunities to play elsewhere. Additionally, two other players portaled out and promising freshman Cam Christie left for the NBA".

Their reporting didn’t seem to confirm the rosy NIL levels that GH’ers said Ben had access to?

I don’t really know if Johnson was a good coach or not because I’m not a coach. But I do know that lack of NIL funds cost them Hawkins and Payne. With those two guys they would be an NCAA tournament team. Seems like they will continue to struggle if they can’t raise more dollars beyond the new agreement allowing them to pay players, since everyone gets to do that.
No they would not have. They had a better squad last year along with those two and got nowhere near the NCAAs.

If that roster cost $2,000,000 Dawson better have gotten at least 1.5 million of that.

It also shows that they were the reason the NIL was so low. They were responsible for raising NIL funds and they ranked near the bottom.

So he can't coach and he can't raise money...what exactly can he do?

(if you believe whoever CBS has as a source...my guess Ben Johnsons agent)

I'm actually a little surprised that it didn't go down that way. Team got back late, setup a meeting for this morning, fire him and then go public with it.

For whatever reason, Coyle didn't want to wait around, wanted to get it done with as soon as the team got back.
I’m betting Coyle wasn’t liking the stories about Ben lacking NIL money. Plus, when you know you know, why wait?

Explains the odd timing on things....shocking that there is a rational explanation for it :)
First thing I thought this morning. Mark is a busy guy with his connections within basketball. People like to think they know it all and some of the media is going to look for blood to react to. It was pretty simple and firings don’t have to be deep when you’re paying lucrative deals and buyouts.

Get it done headed into selection Sunday and start taking calls in your fee time to see if anyone’s to be added to list.

Well, not everyone. Here are some excerpts from a New York Times article:

The NCAA will still oversee eligibility rules related to academics, playing rules and championship events, though a new model of governance for the association is also being worked on that could result in more autonomy for the current Power 4: the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC.

The committee includes two athletic directors from each of the five conferences named in the House case (the lawsuits were filed before 10 members left the Pac-12 for other power leagues): Texas A&M’s Trev Alberts and Kentucky’s Mitch Barnhart from the SEC; Arizona’s Desiree Reed-Francois and Cincinnati’s John Cunningham from the Big 12; Ohio State’s Ross Bjork and Washington’s Pat Chun from the Big Ten; Georgia Tech’s J Batt and Clemson’s Graham Neff from the ACC; and Oregon State’s Scott Barnes and Washington State’s Anne McCoy from the Pac-12.

The Big East isn't listed above. Also, about NIL:

The conferences said the committee is working on four areas of implementation:

  • How schools that opt in to the terms of the settlement will report what they are spending on revenue-sharing payments. LBi Software, which works with professional sports leagues such as MLB and the NBA, has been retained to develop a cap management system.
  • Assessing the legitimacy of third-party name, image and likeness deals between college athletes and companies and organizations such as NIL collectives. The conferences are working with accounting giant Deloitte to evaluate whether deals are for “valid business purposes.” Under the settlement, all deals between athletes and third parties of $600 or more will be evaluated.
  • Drafting new rules and clarifying existing ones related to the settlement, such as parameters for the roster limits that will replace scholarship limits on a sport-by-sport basis.
  • Creating a new entity to enforce rules, investigate potential violations and dole out penalties when necessary.

I suspect NIL contributions will decrease anyway over time after Revenue Sharing kicks in. Also, if they are really serious about demanding that NIL deals have a "valid business purpose," that should cause a major reduction to payments classified as NIL.

So, yes, Minnesota will not have an advantage over teams within the four power conferences but they should have an advantage over schools outside of those conferences. Right now, I suspect that more than a few schools outside of those four conferences have a NIL advantage over MN basketball.

Free time? Seriously, you went with 'free time." Here is my proposed call schedule: Call to candidate. Call to donor. Call to transfer candidate. Call to candidate. Call to donor. As of this minute, Coyle is the defacto head coach of the team which is why I included calls to players in the transfer portal.

I don't think that's appropriate for an athletic director. The new coach should be able to select his own transfers. Now, maybe it would be fine for an AD to contact existing team players (like Asuma and Frank Mitchell) and the incoming freshmen to encourage them to remain with the program.

Whoever the new coach is should have a GM with experience managing a roster and budgets. Coyle needs to give every resource for the new coach to succeed instead of hopes and prayers.

You clearly know what you’re talking about. Maybe if Coyle doesn’t work out you should be in charge.

I agree with this. It's weird to say but teams need a GM. If not each team at least a GM and a multiple staff to run all the sports. D1/P5 sports is 100% now pro sports, a GM is a must.

I would go like this: Call to silent verbal coach's agent. Assure him all of the money and paperwork has been bagged up and ready to ship.

Time for Izzo to put his money where his mouth is and hire Ben as an assistant, and head-coach-in-waiting.
I was about to post the same thing. If all the people who blamed the team's lack of success on everything but the coach were right, there should be a line of people around the corner that can't wait to get Coach Johnson on their staff.

I wish him the best, but this move was necessary. If nothing else, it will generate some buzz in the fanbase. A new coach usually brings at least a little optimism and hope if nothing else. That will help sell tickets and get donations.

Finally someone who gets it. They will have an advantage over the other 3 conferences as well and a third of the Big Ten. If we do this right- money should not be an issue any longer.

Did you seriously think about the job requirements for each before posting?

Do you think good programs have the coach as the primary money raiser?

They may be the face, but the work is done elsewhere. Coaches show up for prearranged events.

Fundraising is a hard, full time job.

Coaching is a hard full time 70-80 hour a week job.

There are only 168 hours in a week. Both require hours that compete with each other.

That would be collassal error in system design and admin infrastructure to combine the duties.
