This needs its own thread now:

Unrealistic But Take a Shot:

-Eric Musselman: Not likely to leave USC after one year but doesn't like the B1G travel from CA, so maybe?

-Brian Dutcher

-Tony Bennett

-Bill Self: Tubby Smith Part II?

The realistic list:

1. Darian DeVries-WVU-Probably a reach especially if Iowa opens.

2. Chris Mack-Charleston

3. Ben McCollum-Drake

4. Kyle Smith-Stanford. Also a reach to get a guy to leave after one year. But Stanford in the ACC has to suck.

5. Niko Medved-CSU

6. Leon Rice-Boise

7. Andy Enfield-SMU. Same as Kyle Smith

8. Ryan Odom-VCU

9. Will Wade-Just don't think the U will go there.

10 (tie). The Northern State 2002 stars: Steve Smiley-Northern Colorado/Sundance Wicks-Wyoming.

I hope he already has a coach lined up to avoid whatever happened 4 years ago that lead to Ben Johnson.

I really think we need someone from the unrealistic list (or someone who we'd put on the unrealistic list if their name got out) to inject some real life in to this program.

I haven't put a realistic list of names together, but I would add Alan Huss to your list. Former Creighton assistant who is taking High Point to the NCAA tournament this year. 27-5 in conference play in his 2 years there.

My gut says this is a done deal in Coyles mind anyway. When Coach P was brought in it seemed obvious they had a plan and executed it immediately. Hopefully the same thing here. Say what you want about Coyle, he does reasonably well with coaching searches. I’m in the camp that believes the CBJ hire came from above. That will stay quiet to eternity though.

I like that list. He's fiery, which is what we need. Also Brian Hodgson from Arkansas State. In 2 years, has had back to back 20 plus wins. They lost in the conference championship, but he's from the Nate Oats coaching tree. Runs a fun offense and he gets the most out of his players

While I think the Gophers are about 25 years overdue for a good break I can't help but think this is the guy who thought Ben Johnson was the answer in the first place. I'm hopeful because I don't think things could be much worse but I will wait and see with bated breath what will happen.

Here's a name that I haven't heard mentioned but I would be very interested in:

Alan Huss

From the KC area, played under Altman at Creighton, was an assistant under McDermott at Creighton. He took over a bad High Point team and has 2 conference championships in 2 seasons there.

Edit: I also totally missed EG#9 mention Huss a few posts ago.

I’ve always thought Midwest connections were important, but in a pay for play and national conference environment, not so much anymore. His resume looks good though.

I don't think it's important when it comes to winning, but I do think it's important to who wants to take this job.

Heard an interview with Huss the other day, he'd be a great hire. Just inked a new deal with HPU, but that's not an obstacle.

I still don't think that was Coyle's decision. Like at Indiana, AD Dolson wanted to fire Woodson after the B1G tournament last year but was blocked from doing it. Ben's resume shouldn't have even gotten past the front door.

I don't believe that Ben was Coyle's choice.

I really like Hodgson. Also, if you’ve ever seen a picture of the guy with his wife, it should clear up any doubts anyone has on whether or not he’ll be able to recruit.

Fiery is fine, as long as the new coach isn’t a constant whiner and complainer, like the Hurley boys, who have never agreed with any call against their teams, ever!

My list
Dutcher : just ask, won't happen

Wade: want to ask, probably can't

Odom: successful at every stop, slowly working his way up. Would he take it?

McCollum: only 1 year at D1 is interesting but he's a winner and the hot name. Younger guy with Midwest roots who might stick around a long time if successful. Feels like the perfect combo

Niko: I don't know why but he doesn't really excite me a ton. That said, a coach who has won at multiple stops and would likely stick around would be a massive upgrade.

I'm not even calling anyone else.

I have always liked Medved. His roster is decent, could bring a few players with him. He would be a safe hire. I assume Thorson would stay on the staff with him.

Similar list, but I am not as high on Odom as others. Utah State and VCU are traditionally pretty decent basketball schools. We are not. Can he take a bad program and make them good? If that is the direction we go, I would definitely be all in though!

I do agree we don't get past Niko. He has made CSU into a solid mid major from basically nothing. Also if he makes the tourney this year (and I think they win enough in the MW Tourney to make it) that is the tourney in 3 out of 4 years.

Coyle needs to make a splash hire. This basketball program needs new life. Bring in Brian Dutcher or a big name. I would even entertain Ryan Saunders.
Ryan Saunders has a worse career win pct than Ben and has never coached in college... You would entertain that guy??? That would be like combining the hire of Pitino and Johnson. Hiring a guy because his dad was a great coach and has no experience. That would be a complete disaster.

He has HC experience: NBA HC experience. Is that transferable to a P4 school? Maybe. Maybe not. Still puts him 3/4 of a step ahead of the last two MBB HC hires.
