Two more names expected to receive consideration if the Gophers men’s basketball team makes a coaching change at season’s end: Ryan Saunders, the former Gopher from Wayzata who’s an assistant with the Denver Nuggets, and Sean Sweeney, the former University of St. Thomas and Cretin-Derham Hall star who’s the top assistant with the Dallas Mavericks.

Besides Colorado State head coach Niko Medved, the former Gophers team manager from Roseville, Utah head Craig Smith, who is from Stephen, Minn., is also expected to be considered.

And word in coaching circles is that Tom Crean, the fiery former Georgia, Indiana and Marquette coach, would love to have the Minnesota job.

Go Gophers!!

Is his main talking point at the opening press conference going to be where Indiana was at when he took over?

Crean has been able to attract top end talent. However, there's a reason no one else has taken a chance on him - he can't actually coach. He had Anthony Edwards and went 5-13 in the SEC. His last year at Georgia he was 1-17. I'm sure the casual fan will see a name they recognize and get all excited. The "create fanbase buzz" crowd will be ecstatic.

There, I fixed it for you. No IF about it. He's done.

I don't care if he can create buzz but can Crean or whoever gets the job get enough dollars on an annual basis to buy players. Listening to him on broadcast he seems to understand what's needed to win today the real question is can he do it? He's certainly has great players at all of his stops. Took Marquette to a final four won the big ten title at Indiana, but his teams fell off a cliff at the end at IU and his Georgia tenure was terrible. Always seemed like teams would adjust to him at halftime at IU and his teams would choke games away

Ask yourself which program Minnesota has more in common with, Marquette, Indiana, or Georgia.

Eric Musselman would be interesting.

his claim to fame came on 2003 Final 4 run led by Wade, Novak and Diener.

Yeah idk about Crean. He can recruit and builds a solid relationship with players. But the actual coaching has been lacking.

There would be many worse hires out there, but don't think he should be a priority either.

I think it’s a completely different era and would take Crean in a heartbeat. I think NIL plays to his strengths. On the Edwards part, superstar NBA players don’t always equate to winning in College, especially when they’re as young as Edwards was.

Sometimes you can find deals from past seasons on the clearance rack, but there's also a good chance you end up looking foolish.

Hard pass on Crean. He was worst at GA than BJ at MN. That's hard to believe

To be fair, while Ben is currently riding high with a 24.5% conference winning %, he will be giving Tom's 20.8% at Georgia a run for its money by the end of this season if he lasts that long. 1-19 would get it done.

No to Crean. No to Ryan Saunders. And no to an NBA assistant with no college experience as a HC.

Smith and Medved, more Tier 2 guys but I'll accept those hats in the ring.
Agree to that. Will Wade would be a welcomed addition too. The coach at Arkansas State would be a good candidate too. They beat Memphis on the road and they're currently 10-3 in the Sun Belt on a 5 game winning streak

Intrigued by the Arkansas St. guy. Young - 37 years old.

Win at Memphis like you said, then at UAB as well.

I'd obviously take any of the big names but of the realistic people, it just seems like Will Wade is the obvious choice. My only concern is that even though cheating is somehow legal, we'll find a way to get caught (ala Glen Taylor on a party napkin).

This would be yet another colossal mistake by Gopher men’s basketball, amid decades of colossal mistakes.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. I don't think people on here realize how bad Ben and his staff have been. All of these coaches would be a massive upgrade.
