All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

Today is a banner Baseball Grid Day for Don Sutton fans. The HoFer & 300 Game Winner played for all 4 franchises involved.

He can be used in all but 2 squares overall.

Twins Alert on the Grid today. After realizing a former Twin fit in the Pirate/200 K cube, I tried to go 9 for 9 using all Twinkies.

I couldn't think of one though in the Buc/Friar square, so I punted and put in Kurt Bevacqua, so 1 short.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Dick Mountain.

Funny, even though it never generates a good rarity score I try to use Jaromir Jagr on the hockey grid whenever possible. More often than not he is eligible for multiple squares, including 2 today.

I thought I could get one of my all-time low scores today after my top row with the Twins--Kelvin Torve (Mets-.1%), Chuck Baker (Padres-.1%) and Camilo Pascual (200 SO's-2%)

Alas, the Pirates/200 SO's (Bob Veale-7%) done me in for a sub 10% score. I figure that's where you utilized Circle Me, am I correct? I slid him into the bottom square (outside of US/200 SO's) for a cool 2%.

And your Padres/Bucs/Twins conundrum? Can't think of anyone, sorry to say. No Orosco, Schatzeder, or LaTroy--no Junior Ortiz, Rene Rivera, or Mark Salas either. It appears to be a white whale.

Great calls on Torve & Baker. Circle Me actually did not record 200 Ks during his "We Are Family Tenure". However, I did use him on the Foreign Born / 200 K list. It's actually Liriano that had a such a season in the Three River City.

Rich Hill (aka, Dick Mountain). Checking through the list afterwards, I think he's the only one.

Well damn, I never imagined that Liriano achieved that mark post-Twins career. In my internal narrative, his career was pretty much done after the injuries with the Twins.

And thank you for clarifying Dick Mountain—every time you mentioned him, I thought to myself, ‘how did I overlook Mr Mountain when I was so attuned to the likes of Rusty Kuntz, Dick Pole, and Pete LaCock? I kept meaning to look Mountain up on Baseball Reference and would then forget. Thank you for saving me from the embarrassment of inquiring about his story. 🤣

The Mountain Man is a stalwart Grid Cheat Code, but I forgot he had a stint in SD

For my other 6 Twins besides Bert (2%) & Francisco (6%) they were:

Mets/John Candelaria (.3%)
Padres/Luis Arráez (16%)
200K/Pablo Lopez (6%)

Met/Pirate - Doug Mientkiewicz (0.2%,)
Foreign/Met - Carlos Gomez (0.3%)
Foreign/Padre - Nelson Cruz (0.6%)

Bevacqua was 1% for a Rarity Score of 35.

Have fun with your Rangers today.

I did--anytime you can invite John Lowenstein, Danny Darwin and LaRue Washington to the party, it's a good day.

I also was able to utilize Claudell Washington--if only I could have found a spot for U.L. it would have been the perfect day. But I used Kirby, so it was close to a perfect day.

Btw, nice use of Doug M., I had no idea that he played for both those franchises. Whatever was happening in my life, I really lost track of him after his BoSox world champs year and the controversy with keeping the ball from the final out.

One day there will be a grid where 1 name can fill all 9 squares.

I didn't go super rare for the Twins (1-2% each) and I will list later. Current overall Rarity is at 9%. Score.
Nice work--I'm sitting at 8% currently and I have to tell you, the "Holy Hell..." series has really come in handy, when I can remember who the hell I put down for each team ;-).

My Twins/Cubs was Dave LaRoche (.1%)
Twins/Dodgers, the pride of Rothsay (1%)
Twins/Astros, Mark Davidson, part of the '87 triumvirate that made their way down to Houston within a couple seasons (.3%)

Where I call BS on the Grid today is the scores for the HOF players, where my biggest percentages came in for Houston and the Cubs. With the 'Stros, I have no issue--I used Nellie Fox at 2%, which I actually thought might be higher (more on that in a minute). For the Cubs, I used Joe Tinker, figuring that would be a sub-1%'er, but he also came in at 2%. The Cubs have 46 HOF'ers in their history, while the Colt 45/Astros have 10 and these two came out with the same percentage?

On a side note, quick trivia question--I was able to recall 7 of the 10 HOF'ers for Houston's franchise--Fox, Robin Roberts, Eddie Mathews, Joe Morgan, Nolan Ryan, Jeff Bagwell, and Craig Biggio. Can you name the other three? (Two of the names were ones that I did the V8 head slap after seeing their names, but #10 on the list was a big surprise for me).

Well, I just gave you Don Sutton a couple of days ago! Randy Johnson is another. I can't think of the 10th.

We were thinking similar on the Cubbies, I went Evers (1%).

Looking up the 10th, it was a surprise to me as well (if it was the same player), given how recent when he played at Minute Maid (2009).

Better known for the other Texas franchise. Won a WS with a non-Texas team.
