Fox Sports TV and AEG entertainment are creating a new postseason men's College basketball tournament next year. From the AP:

The College Basketball Crown will be a 16-team tournament that will take place March 31 through April 6, 2025, in Las Vegas. The games will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena. Both venues have hosted college basketball games in the past, including the Pac-12 tournaments.

Teams that did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament will be eligible. The Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East — whose games are carried on Fox — will each have two automatic entries. The additional teams will be selected by a committee.

The tournament is expected to be the biggest competitor to the National Invitation Tournament. The NCAA, which runs the NIT, changed its selection process this season to include more teams from Power Six conferences. However, at least eight schools — all but one being from one of the power conferences — declined invitations or said in advance it would not participate in the 32-team tournament.
 






from what I've read, I get the feeling that Fox is going to play this up - try to give it some pizzazz - "All the games are in Vegas" - "All the games will be on 'regular' TV and easy to find."

right now, the NIT is just seen as an also-ran tournament. so Fox and AEG see an opportunity to come out with something that is more fun and flashy - a real alternative for teams that missed the NCAA.

NCAA tournament should be more like this to Always thought the first travel spot in NCAA should get first 3 rounds and then elite 8 should be held next week at possibly new location. Save on a lot of travel and get the tournament done in 12 days.

I don’t know the math, but that scenario sounds like less TV time and less money not bleeding it out over another week.

Way more convenient for fans and participants but that is barely on the radar of the decision makers.

Yeah. I mean I kinda liked our guys getting a couple tough road games for experience. But on the other hand...we hardly ever used to lose to teams like Indiana State in the past. At some point that could tell on us. On the program.

Once we right the ship...we should never be forced play AT Butler or Indiana State. Only if we want to.

That sounds horrible for TV/streaming which provides the bulk of the revenue to the NCAA.

In addition 6 games in 12 days for teams in that make the championship game could be some terrible basketball as the players would be so tired.

Depending on how you look at it, the tournament is either putting the squeeze on the conferences with Fox affiliation or punishing those with ESPN affiliations.

Once we right the ship, we shouldn't worry about playing at Butler or Indiana State.
 

It makes the NIT a third-rate tournament. This new tournament includes the best talent that does not make the main NCAA tournament.
