2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

PSU added former top 75 HS recruit(2021) D'Marco Dunn yesterday from UNC. I think they've put together a good enough roster to avoid weakling Wednesday, and I might even project them as a tournament team. Rhodes has killed it in the portal. Their backcourt is going to be really good again.

Because they got a guy who was ranked top 75 2 years ago, averaged less than 3 points a game on an average UNC team and has shown nothing in 2 years of college? Players like this normally transfer down to mid majors.

Yes. Hubert Davis notoriously played a thin bench(to their detriment). He was stuck behind two guards that also played for a title the year before this past one. They've killed it in the portal in terms of quality and quantity. It's why they rank as a top 10 transfer class. Plus, they've got an accomplished head coach who I trust to take this collection and get the best out of it. Helps to have HC experience.

I'm willing to guess if he came he came here there would be a few singing his praises from the mountain tops.

I'd guess he has the same potential to be good or bad as Hawkins/Mitchell who had better stats at way worse competition levels.

GH is just full of posters singing the basketball teams praises! People like said poster and you would say he's unproven and clown him let's be real.

If you're referring to me, you are incorrect. I'd MUCH rather take a chance on this guy than someone like Hawkins. I've been pretty steadfast about that since the portal became more of a thing. Both could end up having the same end result in terms of production, but the ceiling with this guy is higher than that of Hawkins IMO.

There were more than a few people trying to rationalize the Jack Wilson signing as a good thing. If that isn't singing praises for the team then I don't know what is. There is just very little praise to go around currently, that will all change when they start winning games of significance. Ben has a long way to go before earning the trust of the fanbase, whereas the coach brought in to PSU seemingly has that earned credibility already from prior head coaching and his first offseason with the new team. This will also change if Rhodes loses on par with the Gophers over the past 2 seasons.

For perspective- if we had an entirely new roster and our transfers were:

Payne, Garcia, Hawkins, JOJ, Mitchell, Carrington, Betts, Ihnen, Fox and Christie I would venture a guess that our class would be rated very highly. Perhaps #1
For this to be true, Minnesota would now have to be better than Florida. I have no idea who Florida picked up, who their coach is, or even how they did last year. But despite all that ignorance, I'm fairly confident they'll be better than Minnesota.

He doesn't even have to come here. If he committed to MN and then de-committed people would be celebrating our recruiting prowess.

The only two of those players that would rank anywhere near Florida's class of transfers are Payne and Garcia.

Even though Florida added 5 transfers, our 10 players would not be higher ranked than Florida's - Florida also didn't lose their entire roster. They are bringing back a number of their best players.

So I guess I don't really see the comparison.

will be interesting to see what mongolian mike does if/when he isn't drafted. said he is definitely not returning to dayton

maybe add Isaiah Addo-Ankrah utsa to this list?
Mongolian Mike is down to a final 3 of Memphis, San Francisco, and Nebraska. Sounds like Memphis is on the outside of the other two

Brutal for them. I like our chances to beat them this year now with losing him and Spencer. Two big losses.
Isn’t that the team all the CBJ apologist say we are modeling our program after…yet they are having tons of players jump ship.

What do you think Ben Johnson did wrong in the recruitment of Dennis Evans, and what do you think Kenny Payne did right?

San Francisco it is for Mongolian Mike. We'll get to see what we missed out on.

The mistake seems to be recruiting anyone with an AAU coach named Kool aid to come to MN. We just aren't built for that currently.

Might be because he took them to the E8, while we won 2 league games.
It is always the fan base . Fair weather fans aren’t any good to the the program in the good times either. They exist only to please themselves.
