Jim Leonhard out of UW after the bowl game.

well, this story keeps turning. unless it was not reported correctly.

But the earlier stories made it sound like Leonhard was staying.

again, I would love to be a fly on the wall in the AD's office to know what was really going on behind the scenes.

there has to be more to this than has been reported to date.

I think there are some Wisconsin beat reporters who trust their sources but their sources are feeding them department rumors not facts

Same reporters who said he was a done deal head coach were saying he was back

There are legitimately no earnest hard-hitting journalists on the Badger sports beat, particularly football, who are going to turn up anything on this story. They didn’t even break the Fickell news. It’s a company town, and their employers know what keeps people buying their product, so they don’t rock the boat. Never have, in the Madison or Milwaukee markets, at least in the 30 years since Alvarez took over.

This.

Go Gophers!!

Not surprising that Lrinard would leave...found the original story that he was staying bewildering.
It was just obviously and blatantly wrong. And most Badger fans even thought it was BS.

Their sportswriters are blind homers. The writers that cover Badger athletics for the State Journal make Sid (in his day) look like Patrick Reusse (in his day).

That is not completely true. The WSJ beat reporters are more objective than the beat writer for the Milwaukee paper.
In fairness, all the reporters report what they are told by their sources and negative reporting dries up those sources.
No one ever, never, anywhere surpassed "Homer" Hartman.

It never made sense for Leonhard to stay, once Fickell was hired.

Perfectly said

There is another possibility or two. 1 He changed his mind. 2 He has some intriguing offers elsewhere to consider that recently presented themselves.

If it was reported incorrectly would we have a several days gap to correct it?

This is the best news I’ve heard all week, and I’ll gladly say Some guy and others were correct!!! I’ll stick to my belief that he will be the sconsin head coach within the next 7 years.

If you take the "new coach mike keep rando loved old coach" articles as an example ... it almost never actually happens.

He'll find a soft landing place. Guess that Fickell will be bringing along his guys rather than looking around too much. Because if he were looking for a DC....Leonard would be a good get.

kudos to you for owning.

You mean like how JL was the coach for sure for weeks...then one day notsomuch?

Athletic reporting that Fickell was open to keeping Leonhard on staff.

So Leonard either has in hand or thinks he will have better opportunities elsewhere.

Maybe he will take over for another former Badger, Sean Lewis, as HC at Kent State?

In this case, yes
There are two parties who could confirm or deny it.
JL and the university of wisconsin

The fact that neither denied it tells me that it was still a possibility.
The fact that neither confirmed it says it wasn’t a done deal.

So I’m guessing there was speculation and it may have been close. Clearly it was never a done deal. The correction eventually happened by JL.

Him staying on till the bowl game and then leaving makes way more sense than him becoming a permanent part of Fickell's staff. Was very surprised when it was reported that he was staying.

I stated in another thread that there was no way he was staying and I was shocked when it appeared that he was. From what I heard from someone who would know, Leonard came back to UW last year because he was all but guaranteed to take over for Chryst when he decided to be done. Leonard had offers from the NFL last offseason but came back based on that "promise". He, and the rest of the staff, were fairly blindsided by the Fickell hiring.

Correct
And it would merit an announcement as it was odd he was passed on and could’ve peaced out before the bowl

Tough to know what the truth is but wouldn't put a ton of stock in Fickell saying he was open to keeping him on staff as that was probably more of a PR move than anything considering how popular Leonhard is with current players and the fan base.

Just didn't make sense for him to stay though. No way Fickell wants his DC to be someone who was in serious contention to be the head coach when he was hired. That is just asking for trouble if things go sideways as the fanbase would quickly be calling for Leonhard to get the job.

Reality is when new coaches come in at the power 5 level they rarely retain coaches from the previous staff. And they almost always without exception bring in their own coordinators. Heck, at this point new coaches want to blow out pretty much everyone from the coaching staff down to the support staff and bring in all of their own people.

The bolded makes perfect sense. (Although it worked out in Remember the Titans  )

It doesn't make any sense in the slightest that Fickell wouldn't acknowledge the prowess of the former DC and that the current roster is built for a particular scheme that that DC is an expert in.

So if that DC wanted to stay and had no ambition to ever take over the HC job, the smart move would be to keep him.
