All Things Nolan Winter Recruitment Thread (Class of 2023, Gophers Offered, Son of Trevor)

FFS people, Trevor was an important part of our FF run. Was he Bobby, Sam, Q, JT or Courtney, no, but he was dependable and important role player.

Other than that, I’m moving on and hoping we turn our program around with guys who want to be here.
Last thing, just to clear this up...

Winter was important as he was our only backup big. He was dependable as in he was there, he showed up. But frontcourt backups was our only weakness. A glaring weakness that we tried to be careful to avoid.

for the people saying "this is a loss."

It may be a loss in terms of optics.

But whether it is a loss on the court - that we just don't know.

Now, if Winter lights it up for WI, while Betts struggles for MN, then you could objectively say it was a loss.

But, if the opposite is true - Winter struggles at WI while Betts shines for MN, then there is no way it can be a 'loss' in terms of the on-the-court results.

I feel empathy for coaches like Ben Johnson. Their jobs depend on the whims and decisions made by 17-year-old kids. that can't be easy to deal with.

Now, the Gophers just need to get their NIL rolling so they can buy more players.............
The bold is very true. I call it a "loss" because we were recruiting the kid hard and he went to our hated rivals. I don't care if hes from MN, Cali, or Timbuktu thats a loss in my book.

You are right, today we really dont know but thats recruiting. I am sure our boards were going bonkers the day Jeff Jones and his 5* rating committed, turns out if we "missed" out on him to USC/FL it wouldnt have mattered one bit. That will be seen as revisionist history.. If he is bad the ones who say this doesnt hurt will say see told ya! if hes all big 10 the other side will say yep total whiff wow Ben is terrible.

Thats some of the reason everyone (and I include myself in that) SHOULDN'T probably get so caught up in recruiting, there are plenty of 5* that get out played by 2* guys and vice versa, but as fans its human nature to look at those type things. Its exciting, we all want to have stars lined up and be awesome.

It hurts and shows that work has to be done on the court to likely start getting these kids to stay. We are only in year #2. Show improvement and keep building local ties and we will be ok.
You keep dreaming. High school kids want to go where they can win. AAU players think of MN as a low level team that just happens to play in the BIG10. It will take a big name coach hire to move the needle. This team overachieved last year and still lost 12 of its last 14 games. Would you want to play here if you weren't from MN.

You sound dumb! Ben and his staff has recruited very well so far. You can see he has a plan for what type of kids he’s looking for and how they’ll fit in his system. As you said they overachieved last year so you must be admitting that he can at least coach. Ben and Thorson has the respect of Ali most every HS coach in the state so they’ll be in the mix for local kids. Noah Winter is just ok. Not a huge miss. He’s a kid he had to recruit because they promised to prioritize local kids. He’s a much better fit at WI and has a better opportunity there. And don’t blame is parents. That Lakeville cult supersedes alumni loyalty

Dont feed the troll.
Taking the Minnesota side against the pro-Wisconsin comments on a Gopher board isn't trolling.

Stating the other side of the 'Nolan is a hurtful loss', 'Wisconsin develops players better', & 'Trevor was a good player' arguments isn't trolling.

Did you read my post. We're not there yet. Also, the kids that choose Wisconsin really aren't kids that fit what Johnson is looking to do here, so I don't consider it a huge loss. We got the #1-2 kid from Illinois and he likely pushed Totino kid to Ohio State. As Fleck would say, we want kids that want to be Gophers. Has to be mutual and a good fit. Winning will move the needle over a new coach in my opinion.

Someday you will need to deal with reality and the reality is that Johnson has recruited second and third tier players from MN. This equates to a bottom dweller in the BIG10. I wish we could bet money on the end results of these little discussions. Every time a MN player chooses an out of state team its always "not a big miss" or "he wouldn't have played here much". I'm sure when he is winning the BIG10 and going to the tourney every year with WI, he's not going even think about MN.

I wish we could go look at top players in other states and the % of top tier kids that stay in their homestate. Then go further and look at the ones who stay within 20-30 of their home city.
Location is positive for some and a negative for some. You think Illinois fans are whining about Christie coming here?

Probably not since they hired a coach who's a proven winner, and have the #7 incoming recruiting class in the country with 3 guards rated higher than Christie.

How about Wisconsin? They’re not getting their own top tier players along with our second and third tier players. You should be quiet

All 3 MN players had other Power 5 offers. It's not like Johnson is settling for MN preps that no one has ever heard of. All 3 of the MN recruits that joined this year had played well in the summer on 2021 and were well regarded. Have you even seen them play in person?

They literally just started official practice last week. Can you wait until after their first game before calling them 2nd and 3rd tier? You only have to wait about 5 weeks.

Mods @GopherLady - please provide a dislike 👎 button and we can call it giving someone, “The Jay.”
Lots of Wisconsin fans (trolls) in semi-disguise on here. I'm for letting anyone in...but if you're calling for the mods, it's really YOU who should be investigated.

Says the guy who probably has the most posts in this thread. Now who is being misleading?

(the answer is you)
I never posted even once about Winter...until about a week before his announcement. And then I said his recruitment is boring me.

Pretty obvious to most that it was a joke/a bit, but apparently not to someone who fancies himself as the John Wooden of the board and takes it and himself uber seriously.
