Interesting notes:

• A win would notch Purdue’s third win against an AP ranked opponent in the last four tries.

• The Boilermakers were without six starters in the FAU game due to injuries: QB Aidan O’Connell, RB King Doerue, WR Broc Thompson, OL Cam Craig, LB Jalen Graham, DB Reese Taylor.

• Charlie Jones leads the country in receptions per game (10.2) and receiving touchdowns (7), while ranking third nationally in receiving yards (533).

• Aidan O’Connell paces the Big Ten in passing yards and total offense. His 333.3 passing yards per game rank fourth nationally, while he stands 11th in total offense with 330 yards per game

• Known for having one of the nation’s best passing offenses under Jeff Brohm, Purdue recorded more rushing yards (188) than passing yards (166) in Saturday’s win over FAU. The last time that happened was Sept. 8, 2018 versus Eastern Michigan (341 yards rushing, 135 yards passing).

• The Boilermakers have been successful in the red zone this season, scoring 16 out of 17 times for a 94 percent rate. Even better, 15 of those 16 red zone scores have been touchdowns (94%).

• Purdue has gotten off to fast starts this season, outscoring the opposition 37-3 in the first quarter.
The Boilermakers’ defense has forced a fumble and a trio of three-and-outs to begin games.

With 41 receptions, Charlie Jones has the most catches by a Big Ten receiver through the first four games since 2000.

The Purdue defense has a pair of pick sixes this season, ranking fifth in the country with two defensive touchdowns.

With the absence of starter King Doerue, walk-on running backs Dylan Downing (113) and Devin Mockobee (37) combined for 150 rushing yards in the win over FAU.

O'Connell is sixth year guy, married. Wife: Jael (Johnson) - July 30, 2022 - Jael (JAY-elle) was a four-year letterwinner with Purdue Volleyball and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. O'Connell layed youth football with Charlie Jones growing up for the Buffalo Grove (IL) Bisons

Brohm is good at upsets.

SPOILERMAKERS • Purdue has become known as the Spoilermakers under Jeff Brohm, collecting five wins over ranked teams during the head coach’s tenure. • Three of those victories were against Top 3 teams, while Purdue handed four of those ranked teams their first loss of the season. • Last season, Purdue knocked off previously unbeaten No. 2 Iowa (Oct. 16) and No. 3 Michigan State (Nov. 6), giving the Boilermakers two wins over Top 5 teams for the first time since 1960. • The Boilermakers beat three ranked teams during the 2018 campaign, Brohm’s second season, for the most victories over ranked teams in a single-season since 2003. • Purdue is 5-9 against AP-ranked teams.

Sept. 22, 2018 Purdue 30, #23 Boston College 13

Good at upsetting teams with leaky pass defenses ('18 OSU and '21 MSU) -- and then just good at beating Iowa in general

SO CLOSE
• While Purdue is 2-2 on the season, the Boilermakers are 64 seconds away from being 4-0.
• Both losses came to teams that are currently ranked and unbeaten.
• No. 12 Penn State scored a go-ahead touchdown with 57 seconds to go to leave West Lafayette with a season-opening victory (Sept. 1
• In the first road game of the season, the Boilermakers suffered a heartbreaking loss to now-No. 25 Syracuse after the Orange found the end zone with just seven seconds left in the ballgame

Aussie punter Ansell averaged 38.3 yards per punt as a freshman, but has increased his output to 45.1 yards per punt this season to rank fourth in the conference.
• Against FAU, Ansell booted a career-long 67-yard punt that was downed at the 4-yard line; the punt was the longest by a Boilermaker since 2019.
• Despite only punting three times against the Owls, Ansell took advantage of his opportunities to flip the field by averaging 55.3 yards per punt.
• Ansell has forced four fair catches, dropped three balls inside the 20-yard line, launched a trio of 50-yard boots and caused a pair of muffs.

HURRY HURRY
• The Boilermaker defense has made habit of living in the offensive backfield with 16 tackles-for-loss, seven sacks and 18 quarterback hurries.
• Junior linebacker Kydran Jenkins leads the team with a pair of stops behind the line, while eight different players have helped tally a sack this year.
• Junior safety Sanoussi Kane and redshirt junior linebacker Jacob Wahlberg have each forced a fumble this season. Kane’s came on the first play of the game against Indiana State and Wahlberg’s sealed the win on a fourth down against FAU.
• Purdue has recovered both fumbles it has forced this year.
• Purdue’s linebacker and defensive line corps applied pressure in the backfield against Penn State, notching eight quarterback hurries, led by three from Kydran Jenkins, matching the season high in 2021.

teams destined for big things win those games. the Boilermakers only have themselves to blame for choking away the Cuse game against a very mediocre looking syracuse team

Glad the game is here and not at Purdue, but this could be a game where they get guys back and ball out. Can't have any let down heading into the bye week.

This note illustrates why it is foolish to get too caught up in weekly season rankings. Iowa was nowhere close to being the #2 team in the country last year and Michigan State was nowhere close to being the #3 team. Both were good and deserved to be ranked but both were also criminally overrated. Iowa especially did not belong anywhere close to the number one ranking at any point in the season last year.

I don't think it will be a close game. I'm sure Purdue will have a plan for beating the Gophs, who have the #3 total offense, #1 first downs offense, #11 scoring offense, #2 scoring defense, #2 first downs defense, #3 total defense.
