Was just going to click to "love it" response, but wanted to say thank you for posting this tweet. It is priceless.

When you see somebody do something so dumb it makes you cringe, that is what we saw. Reminds me of an Impractical Jokers. Who does on onside kick, up 11 when the opposing team has a running back as their front center person with the sole purpose of preventing this type of crap. It is a coaching move with no self awareness of what others are doing. Scott Frost is one of the most self unaware coaches I have ever seen. Brewster at least knew he was a recruiter who needed OC and DC that rocked. Frost has no clue what is going on around him.
 

Just finished watching the game on DVR, didn't know the result beforehand.

Wildly entertaining ball game.

The onside kick...wow. Even novice fans in Ireland getting bombed on free Guinness knew that was epically stupid.

I picked N. Dakota to win next week but hoping that they don't. If they do, the followers will think they beat one of the best teams in the country according to ill resources.
 


The common thing I'm hearing over and over from talking heads and Nebraska fans on their forums is how they have so much more talent than all their opponents. I'm no expert, but I sure don't see that on gamedays. I think most of the real experts will agree that you build a team starting at the O line, D line and QB. Their lines were outplayed on Saturday and looked totally gassed for the whole second half. From what I can find, their QB left Texas because they wouldn't guarantee him a starting job without competition. That was a Texas team that went 5-7. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his incredible talent.

It reminds me of a joke I heard about the Timberwolves many years ago: They should replace the floor of Target Center with wall-to-wall legal pads. Because the Wolves always look good on paper.
 

Haven’t follow the thread to close but did anyone mention that WR Garcia-Castenada had a nice game? He’s a juco transfer that we were in on as well. Looks like he may be a big play threat this year.

Comes up in recruiting threads a fair amount with Nebraska being the poster child for why those rankings should not be viewed for anything more than entertainment purposes.

Based on recruiting rankings Nebraska should be dominating the West, but of course that is not what is playing out on the field. They had the #1 ranked class in the West according to 247 in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

I feel like one flaw in recruiting rankings is because it’s a lot better to have 5 4 star linemen and 3 4 star wideouts than 5 4 star wideouts and 3 star linemen

The recruiting rankings are flawed because they don’t account for roster balance and positional balance.
Have 3 5 star QBs but only one can play at a time. So your ranking is inflated compared to your roster

I'm repeating myself, but Nebby's defensive front 7 looks very mediocre. I didn't pay enough attention to the O line to comment, but NW had Nebby's running game locked down for the most part. No question that Nebby has some nice talent at skill positions.

I think Nebby has some actual talent on their front 7, but it has no apparent DEPTH. The same guys have to play most of the time or there is big fall off. This was especially evident in the later stages of the game when NW went to ground and pound mode. The Nebby D front 7 was gassed and couldn't stop a series of very predictable running plays.

One thing I like about the Gophers on defense this year is the incredible depth at DL. Lacking some game day experience? Yes. Lacking a standout star like Mafe? Yes. Lacking innate talent and strength? NO, we have broad and varied talent on board, mostly "equal." Lacking depth? NO. We might rotate 11 guys at DL. Much rotation, of course, will be situational. But the added advantage is that this DL needn't get beaten down or become exhausted by the 4th Q. The ability for Rossi to roll players all game ensures that our DL (and maybe even LBs if Lindenberg and others emerge) will be as fresh or fresher than any static, non-rotating OL we play all year. We might still be overmatched by a very experienced, talented OL--but we won't be as gassed as the poor Nebby DL and LBs were in the 4th Q against NW. And there is a real possibility that our DL rotation might leave a few "thin" opposing OLs gassed and exhausted come the 4th Q.

Glad we have a few games to tune up our DL personnel usage strategy before B!G play starts. At the moment, I am quite optimistic about the possibilities our depth at DL depth presents.

I totally agree on the bolded. It takes a while for young lines to gel including coaching to their strengths. Think early 2019.

He had a very nice TD catch (great throw from Thompson) in the first half. I didn't see him do much after that though.

Looks like he had 3 catches for 62 yards in addition to a 58 yard catch. Good for 30 ypc.

Imo. The hatred is due to the constant over rating by the national media. It's so insidious even a gopher fan like yourself sees Nebraska as more of a threat than Northwestern despite NW having won the big ten west more recently than Nebraska has made a bowl game and NW has a brand new work out facility, a better coach, and an 80 million dollar stadium renov ation on the near horizon.

I mean in my defense Nebraska beat those guys 56-7 last year. I know last year doesn't mean everything, but I'd say it's more relevant than 2 years ago when NW won the West, plus I've been told that 2020 doesn't really count. People can hate Nebraska all they want, I just don't hate them on the basis of what the media thinks of them. In my experience they have friendly and passionate fans (though the select few that aren't friendly are HUGE a-holes), and they hate the same schools as us. I'll still go on record saying NW is no threat to win the west this year, and will gladly admit if I'm wrong.

They did indeed but a couple of years later because so many players fled Frost and Lincoln those classes were at the bottom of any list.
This year's team had brand new coaches, except the DC, and at least six starters from the transfer portal.
NW put over 500yards on NE. In the 4th quarter, NW was dominant. All that puking in fall camp did not help the NE OL.
It was a very entertaining and satisfying game to watch.

I don't think UND has a lot of football fans to begin with.
