2022 Transfer Portal Discussion

Your two relevant questions had nothing to do with what I said. I was responding to you saying we didn't go after or recruit guys. We did and they said no. That's the fair critique imo, not the statement that they didn't go after guys. I don't know where so many posters get this idea that people are ok with him missing on the frontcourt guys or saying he isn't at fault. No one is saying that. Some are explaining why it happened and are in wait and see mode, but no one is saying he is fault free for the frontcourt misses.

That's not exactly true. Some keep repeating the idea that because a couple of injuries happened, the terrible front court situation was unavoidable. I've made it clear that I believe he could have done more to avoid that result.

Nowhere did I say "we didn't recruit guys" but none of the good front court players we recruited committed. If that's the case, the coach failed plain and simple. He should have targeted different players and have done so sooner. Once again, since you didn't pay attention the first time: OFFERS DON'T MATTER!!!

A few people here have opined that Ben simply moved on to 2022 prep recruiting in the latter part of the summer and just settled on the end of the roster for this season. I think that's probably the correct interpretation. Maybe that was the right decision but that still means he failed to assemble a fully functioning roster for this past season.

Begging your pardon, but if he was willing to admit to not wanting one player in a conversation, I'm guessing that there were others he was at least indifferent to keeping. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad a number of these players left and some, like Robbins, probably weren't going to be persuadable (he missed most of the season anyway) but I would have strongly preferred Sam Freeman and Kenny Pohto over Daniels and Ogele. Brandon Johnson probably wasn't going to stay here after he received an offer from his home town team.
Some GH'ers have an agenda that doesn't fit this little fact.

I'm obviously misunderstanding you saying:

"My complaints exclusively are about the front court players he recruited (or, more appropriately, didn't recruit) last summer. I have no complaints about the guards he recruited."

I paid plenty of attention to what you wrote. Recruiting starts with a call/contact of some sort to get to know one another and see if their is mutual interest. If there is mutual interest, then you will engage in a recruitment relationship. If there isn't on either party, you don't. There isn't enough time and resources to waste time if one of the parties is not interested. I get your point saying offers don't matter, but you can't say they didn't reach/recruit guys. If you paid attention to what I wrote, you would have read me say it's a fair to be critical of who our frontcourt was last year. It's not fair to be critical of who/how hard they recruited imo. This staff works hard as a whole which should be a nice change of pace. All people are saying is they understand why the roster was bad, not excusing it for years to come. Those are different things. You can rebuttal to this if you want and have the last word, but I'll respect the thread and stop derailing it.

Jeff Borzello from ESPN has put out a Top 100 portal list, which at the very least is helpful to organize who is out there in the portal at this particular time.

Pretty good list although it includes players who have committed already and I don't see the Northwestern player in the portal anymore.

This continues to be the biggest myth repeated constantly on this board. Only Carr and Mashburn Jr were in the portal when Johnson was hired. Over the next several weeks after he was hired, more entered the portal.

Ben inherited the majority of the 2020 team. He didn't recruit any of them to stay other than Ihnen. That's on Ben.
That was smart.

Will we have the 2nd 100% total restart? St Peters just had the Drame twins enter, they are closing in on LSU for a total reboot!

It's doesn't matter how hard you work if you're not producing results. If you're working hard but not producing results, then you have to figure out what to do differently.

So, how is Diffident Ben supposed to use last seasons last place finish to land better recruits than we’re landed last summer?

Cam Spencer
“I'm trying to set up visits to Minnesota and Loyola Chicago with a few more in the works but nothing is confirmed right now. The other schools I'm still waiting to confirm a couple things.”
To be honest I don't have a specific date for a commitment but I'll probably use all five visits. After I meet with each coaching staff Im going to just sit down with my family and go from there."
Minnesota: “Our relationship is going well obviously it's a great school and great program with coach Johnson. I definitely want to go out there and visit and meet their staff. Big-10 basketball is definitely something I may want to do.”
“Scoring is something that they emphasized because they lose two scoring guards from last year. They're looking for someone to come in, score the ball, and play the right way. I think I can fit that role.”

And yes that was Jalen Ridgnal, Georgia transfer, committing to Missouri State this afternoon.

Old news, but Sessoms seems to love Michigan.
Michigan: I have a real good relationship with Phil Marteli who coached at St. Joes and I’ve always looked up to him growing up. Coach Juwan Howard likes my game and told me that after the game when we played Michigan. Really at the end of the day it’s Michigan. It’s the Big 10 and I know I can play at that level so now it just comes down to building on the relationship with the coaching staff.

I wasn't knocking those fields. In fact, I work in a field related to one of them.

The point is that trying to make a living in an entertainment field is very risky but the people who persevere despite the odds have guts and provide us with a lot of entertainment if they make it. We should be happy that they do what they do.
Pastry chef?

I think stuff like this is the first layer, then it ramps up with texts and then they hit the portal.

I'm beginning to wonder if we're gonna get anyone from the portal.
No real interest by anyone to come to a culture build.

Many of the guys we are targeting actually have family who live in the Twin Cities, so I think the visits are less publicized or unnecessary. Lots of Zoom.

If you had your choice between Honor or Larson, who would it be? Is Honor one year? Seen it posted a couple of times saying that. Looking at his page makes one think he might have a couple of years. Know Larson is for sure one year. (Little further digging, think Honor has two years left.)
