Week 13 Bowl Projections Thread

Yahoo has what I think I will go with:

Citrus - Iowa

Outback - Minnesota
Music City - Purdue
Las Vegas - Wisconsin
Pinstripe - Penn St
Guaranteed - Maryland

If Outback has the first choice of the five, I could see them saying "we just had Minnesota two years ago, let's get someone else" -OR- "Minnesota traveled well two years ago, let's get them".

Makes sense Music City would want Purdue, just right north.

If Vegas picks next, I'm not sure which fanbase it will think gives it the most. Maybe Penn St, but maybe Wisc?

If Penn St is there for Pinstripe, that makes sense for them.

Guaranteed I think has last pick.
Also, Illinois and Rutgers are out, no 5-12 teams this year. There are 83 bowl-eligible teams with 6 wins and 82 slots available.

My hope is 1) Vegas 2) Outback 3) Guaranteed Rate 4) Music City 5) Pinstripe

I really don't think Outback is on the table, I think that's WI to go to and lose. If I were betting I'd say I'm 65% Nashville and 35% Vegas.

My guess:
1) Outback: WI
2) Vegas: PSU
3) Pinstripe: MD
4) Music City: MN
5) Guaranteed Rate: Purdue

I love both NYC and Nashville, but not end of December and in an outdoor stadium. I want warmth and a break from needing a jacket. Bowl games should not be outdoors in the north.
We're all guessing at this point, but I don't think there's any way PSU gets above the 8-4 teams. Since the B1G is now all about variety (6 teams in 6 years for a lot of these bowls), they'll probably take full advantage of PSU's record to place them in a "low tier" bowl they'd usually not slot into. It's also the reason they might bump PU all the way up to the Outback, but the fact they lost to BOTH MN and Wisconsin makes me doubt that. Honestly, I think it's either Outback or Vegas for MN with PU having a firm lock on Nashville...but again, we're all guessing.

As far as the Outback Bowl is concerned.....does the Bucs organization have any say in the matter....since it's played at their stadium. As I said earlier in the thread....they drafted two Gophers after the Gophers beat Auburn a couple years back. You have to wonder if that is any sort of persuasion.

another Outback guess

I have my room reserved in both Tampa and Vegas. Just give me one of these destinations 🤷🏻‍♂️

This would be an interesting matchup: Minnesota/Clemson in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Oddly enough they have Louisville/LSU in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl (I don't understand how that's even possible.) Anyway, replace Louisville with Minnesota, and I would be super excited about this bowl.

Don't read anything from Sporting News. The B1G isn't slotted for the Duke's Mayo Bowl this season. They've been posting that crap for weeks.

Interesting that there is some Outback Bowl buzz, personally I never considered that even a possibility as I figured Iowa and Wisconsin were a lock for the two Florida bowls.

My priority is getting that 9th win and hopefully finishing inside the top 25. Arkansas in the Outback Bowl would be the toughest matchup I've seen, but also the most prestegious bowl with the most eyes on it.

My preference would be the Las Vegas Bowl over the Music City Bowl because I prefer a matchup with the PAC 12 with my priority being a 9th win and I also love the fact that it would be a night game in Vegas as opposed to a day game in Nashville. One other factor is I've seen a lot of Tennessee predictions for the Music City Bowl and I could see that going one of two ways: Is it a major advantage playing a bowl in your home state with basically a home crowd? or Do you kind of feel like you didn't get a reward of a bowl game and just aren't that enthused?

I can totally understand wanting a 9th win and top 25 finish. I want a matchup with the best team and most prestigious bowl game possible. A lot of hard feelings on the season would be lessened finishing with a win over Wisconsin followed by beating an SEC team in the Outback.

I see a lot of these projections from national reporters and it seems like they're mostly using conference standings/bowl pecking order rather than some of the other considerations that play into it. It seems most of the Outback talk is from national reporters who aren't factoring in that we've been there, others haven't, etc. The local people guessing (Gaard, Burns, etc.) seem to think the Outback is very unlikely.

The only reason to think the Outback is unlikely is that we were just there in 2019.

That, perhaps, is enough reason for the Big Ten and Outback to agree to not place us there. If that ends up being the case, so be it.

The conference bowl placement cycle reset with last year's games and is in year 2 of 6 years during which the B1G will aim to place 6 different teams at each bowl. In year 1 of this cycle the Outback took Indiana, the Music City bowl was canceled, and the B1G didn't have Vegas. So technically every team is on the table for those games. I get why people think MN won't go to Tampa based on 2019, but if the conference thinks fans won't care (i.e., they'll travel) and 4 different teams can be placed there the next 4 years (Iowa, Wisc, MSU, Mich, PSU, etc.), I've gotta think MN is definitely in play this year.

But again, we're all guessing at this point. It's fun though...one of the most interesting weeks of the year each season is trying to guess the bowl destination.

The big ten reset the cycle since we last played in outback.
In theory that should have no bearing.

However,
Wisconsin is a bigger name
Purdue has two top 5 wins
And

I’m not sure if you heard but

We lost to bowling green.

if I had to give a projection I would project outback bowl

Correct about the new cycle. But I believe the Big Ten works with the bowls to set which team goes where ... and it's not like people will simply "forget" that we were just at the Outback in 2019.

Like I said before, that could work against us or for us.

I'd love Vegas or Phoenix.

One game is a 4 hour drive, the other is 10 minutes from my office.

Yea, I still think WI gets the Outback Bowl. I'm keeping fingers crossed for Vegas.

STrib today makes it seem that Wisconsin is an all but lock for the Outback Bowl, depending on if Mich St makes the NY6 (Fiesta).

The tri-favorites

Las Vegas Bowl (9:30 p.m. Dec. 30): This game at Allegiant Field matches a Big Ten team against a Pac-12 opponent, and its Big Ten selection will be made after the Citrus and Outback make their picks. Saccenti said Penn State (7-5), the Gophers and Purdue (8-4) are the teams from which his bowl will choose if three Big Ten teams make the New Year's Six. If it's only two, Wisconsin (8-4) would join the Gophers and Purdue in that mix.

"We go through everything,'' Saccenti said. "We do talk about head-to-head, teams that they beat, teams that they lost to. Quite frankly, it comes down to tickets, travel and TV.'' Penn State, with its national brand, might have the edge there.

Music City Bowl (2 p.m. Dec. 30, Nashville): The Gophers' competition for this bowl appears to be Purdue, a reasonable drive away, and Penn State. "It's a lot of feel and what-ifs,'' Ramsey said of his bowl's decision. "Ultimately, you just try to make the best decision you can for each year.''

Guaranteed Rate Bowl (9:15 p.m. Dec. 28, Phoenix): This game matches a Big Ten team against a Big 12 opponent in the Arizona Diamondbacks ballpark, and Minnesota played in it three times (2006, 2008, 2009) when it was known as the Insight Bowl and played at Sun Devil Stadium.

The bowl's chief executive, Mike Nealy, is a Roseville native, University of Minnesota graduate and former vice president of finance for the Wild. His bowl will pick after the Pinstripe.

"Absolutely, they're in the mix,'' Nealy said of the Gophers. "… It's not a stretch when you look at proximity and which teams are where. … Would you rather go to Detroit, New York or sunny, warm Phoenix?''

The long shots

Outback Bowl
(11 a.m. Jan. 1, Tampa): The Gophers played in the Outback two years ago, and the bowl's contract calls for five different teams in a six-year span. There's a slight chance they end up here, but Wisconsin is the likely choice.

Pinstripe Bowl (1:15 p.m. Dec. 29, New York): Proximity would seem to aim the Yankee Stadium bowl officials toward Maryland or Penn State, if available.

They have us going to the lowest bowl, the Guaranteed Rate, with Penn St getting Vegas, Purdue getting Music City, and Maryland getting Pinstripe.

I mean, this all but confirms the heavy Gopher-hatred/Wisconsin-alumni slant of the STrib sports editor, correct?

STrib doesn't realize that the "the bowl's contract calls for five different teams in a six-year span" thing restarted with the new cycle beginning in 2021?

Wouldn't be a surprise that they didn't do their homework.

The thing I don't like about this article is the Vegas bowl guy pretty much saying Wisconsin has a lock on the Outback if things go as expected this weekend. You'd think he would know by this point, so kind of deflates my balloon on chances of returning to Tampa. I almost certainly would've traveled there, but I doubt I will for the other options. We'll see how it plays out, I guess.

These are the only actual quotes I see in the article, from Saccenti:

"The one thing that sticks in my head is their last game,'' John Saccenti, executive director of the Las Vegas Bowl, said of the Gophers. "That was a game that was really important to them. They beat a team that was on fire."

"We go through everything,'' Saccenti said. "We do talk about head-to-head, teams that they beat, teams that they lost to. Quite frankly, it comes down to tickets, travel and TV.'' Penn State, with its national brand, might have the edge there.

The article does have the following, which I guess you were talking about:

Why wouldn't they quote him, then??

It is possible, of course, that the Big Ten and Outback have some kind of "understanding" that the five year span arrangement will be "rolling in perpetuity, across new contracts/bowl cycles".

If that is the case, then that is that.

A lot of hard feelings would be lessened by beating a PAC12 team in Vegas as well.

Yeah, a win over UCLA would do about as much for us as a win over Miss State and more than a win over Tennessee. Probably less than a win over Arkansas though because they are ranked (barely).

I will be pissed if Penn State gets a better bowl than the Gophers. They don't deserve that this year. Each season should be judged uniquely. If you had a better team in the past, you've already been rewarded for those performances in the past.

This is very disappointing to read as it strongly implies that Wisconsin is considered a tier above us in bowl pecking order.

OR, maybe it means that the Big Ten and Outback have a "gentleman's agreement" to keep the deal with the no same team in 5-year span continuously rolling even over new cycles?

No idea why Wisc would get it over us, otherwise.
