All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

AD's are not hiring guys based on their record compared to previous coaches at that school. They are considering whether a guy can win games there, recruit, get along well with boosters and the AD, and a million other factors. I don't think they're saying "well PJ has to go 8-4 to get this job offer", they are looking at the big picture.
This is a part of the big picture, how a HC improved based on what went on before being hired.

That is my point. when Fleck was hired, we were told that he was going to be different. that he was going to go beyond what Mason or Kill accomplished. That Fleck was going to move the program to a new level.

So far, he has one great season, three seasons near .500, and a current season that includes a loss where the Gophers were a 31-point favorite.

Look - maybe Fleck will go on to roll off multiple 9 or 10-win seasons and achieve all the promise that some people see in him.

All I am saying is that he hasn't done it yet. Is some big-time program going to hire him and hand him a big contract based on one great year? I don't think so.

Murray Warmath was 87-78 at Minnesota. Take away his top 3 seasons, he was 65-73. He sucked. ;)
I think people honestly miss this point all the time.
Before 2019:

Minnesota last finished ranked in 2003
Minnesota last finished ranked twice in 3 seasons in 61-63.

Minnesota last finished ranked 4 times in a row….never

Fleck May never have a winning season again. But let’s not pretend like he is some giant failure for not finishing ranked two of 3 seasons. If Minnesota finished 8-4 with a bowl win this year and goes 9-4. It would be the best 3 year stretch since the 1960s

and would only require us to beat:
Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland +1

Per Shooter:

If football coach P.J. Fleck is to leave the Gophers ($4.5 million buyout), this would be the year considering he’ll be losing 10 starters on offense and 10 on defense after this season. As peerless Gophers reporter Andy Greder pointed out last week, Minnesota has 14 fifth-year players and seven playing in their sixth seasons.

Go Gophers!!

If PJ Fleck's goal is to leave, than this take makes sense. The reality if we win the West and Fleck is still around next year, than Fleck's heart is to make MN the Clemson of the Upper Midwest.

Ahh Shooter....the word Dink gets used a lot around here when referring to media predictions. But few sports writers personify that term better than Shooter.

especially if you consider last year’s 3-4 was conference only

The Gophers may be losing a lot of starters after this season, but because of the way the staff doles out playing time there will be replacements who are ready to step up. This staff believes in rotating players in and out during games, and getting them a taste of competition.

Just look at running back or QB or the defensive line or the defensive backfield. Same with receivers and linebackers.

Fleck and staff have, to my eyes, a very sound strategy for staying competitive, year after year. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs.

At least as far as CBS thinks, Fleck is not a candidate for the LSU opening:

Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M head coach
James Frankin, Penn State head coach
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati head coach
Joe Brady, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator
Billy Napier, Louisiana head coach
Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss head coach
Bob Stoops, former Oklahoma head coach
Bill O'Brien, Alabama offensive coordinator
Mel Tucker, Michigan State head coach
Dave Aranda, Baylor head coach
Matt Rhule, Carolina Panthers head coach

Shooter chimes in:

Word among college coaches, search firms and agents is that Fleck, who loses more than two dozen seniors this year, could be in the market for several jobs.

Virginia Tech remains in play, seeking a return to the days of legendary coach Frank Beamer, who retired in 2015 after 29 seasons and 238 victories. Beamer’s successor, Justin Fuente, is 8-10 the past two seasons. But insiders at Virginia Tech doubt whether the Hokies could pay enough to land Fleck.

Meanwhile, if the Gophers keep winning, several schools are expected to be interested in the 40-year-old Fleck. If he’s going to move on from a veteran program, now might be his best opportunity.

Currently, insiders say Fleck is down the list for the USC job, but still on a list. Penn State’s James Franklin is considered the overwhelming favorite for the USC job. If Franklin leaves Penn State, where he is paid $6 million a year, Fleck instantly becomes a candidate for the Nittany Lions job.

If coach Mel Tucker leaves Michigan State for LSU, Fleck, with his Michigan background (successful Western Michigan coach), immediately becomes a bona-fide candidate for a the Spartans’ job and a contract that pays $5.5 million per year. Fleck and Texas Christian have been mentioned together, but former Gophers coach Jerry Kill is beloved on the TCU staff, which probably hurts Fleck’s chances there.

Insiders say Fleck hasn’t been able to get traction for the LSU job.

Does anyone believe anything that Shooter writes?

The Virginia Tech speculation has never made any sense at all. Why would Fleck want to leave the Big Ten to go there.....makes zero sense.

I also don't see Fleck being in any rush to jump over to the East from the West. But hey, we are winning, so makes sense that the speculation from guys like Shooter would ramp up again because it is what they do.

Va Tech and TCU are not better options at this point than Minnesota. No ACC team (other than maybe Clemson) and certainly no Big XII program, is better than Minnesota.

Florida State, regardless of what has happened post Jimbo, is head and shoulders a better program than we are. Miami is lacking in facilities but is also better. But you did say Clemson is *maybe* a better program than we are so I don't know how much common ground we have.

I think Norvell, regardless of loss to Clemson today, has FSU on right track. I think he's a really good coach. Miami is a frickin cesspool and no one who is established should or would touch it.

I probably shouldn't have said "maybe" about Clemson. Obviously, they are a much better job than MN. I'll be interested to see what happens going forward with FSU. If I recall, their facilities are very sub par, and while they are supposed to be upgrading them, they are far behind the pack. I'll also correct myself and say that Oklahoma State is a better job than Minnesota, but possibly the only Big XII that fits the bill at this point.

I've thought that about Miami for years, but somehow, they keep being relevant, or at least on the edge of relevancy.

It's not about a better program...

Everyone, in here and in the media, has stated that PJ Fleck is an egomaniac ad nauseum. I'm sure there's some truth to that. Does an egomaniac go to a school where he will be just "the next guy?" I don't think so. I think that rules out schools like FSU and Miami... or even LSU. Better programs? Not to me, but I get where you're coming from. Not programs where PJ can really make his own history, though.

I think any talk of schools like VA Tech or TCU are kind of silly as well... Not enough of a ego-boost to go to either of them.

The one opening that would be enticing, I bet, would be the one at USC. Looks like PJ is well down the list, though.

Though I think Franklin is a good coach and seemingly good person, I'm not clear on the unadulterated love for him. Kind if a close, but no cigar record.

TCU? No one is leaving the B1G for the remnants of the Big 12. Good lord.

Does…Shooter realize if Fleck went to TCU ol Jer and everyone else would be gone? Does he think Fleck would be a coordinator or something?

Fleck is currently #24 on the list.

If he gets a million dollar raise, he'll move up right behind Mel Tucker and be #14 with no other changes.

To get to the stupid money level, you need to look at those top 10 programs or be dedicated to Northwestern.

PJ is doing such a strong job with the team off the field, it makes you a little more willing to overpay his on the field, because in our political climate of extra sensitivity and thriftiness around anything sports related, it's going to be really hard for another coach to win public opinion like he's doing so the football program can produce and appear current enough from a social standpoint.
