Three days before the start of Texas A&M's football season, the school announced a contract extension for coach Jimbo Fisher.

But perhaps the most notable part of the deal went unsaid.

By tacking on four fully-guaranteed years to Fisher's already massive contract, Texas A&M immediately doubled the size of his buyout clause – which, according to USA TODAY Sports research, is the largest in the history of college football.

Fisher, 56, is making $7.5 million this year and would be owed about $95.6 million if he is fired without cause on Dec. 1. Prior to the extension, he would've been due $45.6 million.

No coach besides Fisher has ever had a buyout north of $50 million.

Well I am sure that now that there has been one there will be more. Teams will be forced to bankrupt themselves to fire a coach, and yet the coach will be able to jump ship without any real consequences.

pretty sure it said that all happened before the season. Sure it came up now since I am guessing there would be instant speculation on Fischer leaving since they beat Bama.

There's zero chance he was going to be fired this year without cause anyways.
 

that's an insane number. And prior to that 'Bama win, aTm fans weren't happy. How quickly things change!

He can be part owner of a lot of pro sport teams with that kind of money. wow!
 



The dollar amounts are eye popping. I heard Pat Jones on the radio here in OKC a few years ago and he said his father and a few other men pooled their money to buy a new cadillac to entice tha Arkansas coach to stick around (I'm don't recall the name of the coach, but I'm pretty sure it was Bowden Wyatt). The coach accepted the car and within a week left Arkansas for a new job. He probably showed up in style, driving his new Cadillac.
 

Well, paper money will soon be fire starters so consider that.
