Curtis Dunlap Jr has entered the transfer portal...again

19 OL on Roster, losing about 7-8 and will need to hit the transfer portal for some guys.

The six and seven man oline front has really not been that effective, except vs Colorado...without Mo and Trey, I would think we may see less of it moving forward
Yeah unless it's short yardage, I'm not a fan of having 6 (or 7!) OL in the formation.

We have real TE's ... that can actually run a route and catch a pass, let them be real TE's.

rs frosh, with rs year a gimme...so technically a true frosh
Then I’d rather have Ersery get Dunlap’s snaps. We lose a lot of guys after this season.

Thing is, we have a lot of Tackle body types. Those are tall guys with long limbs and high centers of gravity. They will not be well suited for the interior.

Yeah, that was never going to be effective once teams had the chance to gameplan for it. It was a stunt that had short term benefits.

Burns does a hell of a job at 247...weekly posts info from PFF on snap counts/grades:

Center John Michael Schmitz: 55 of 55 snaps (100%) - Grade of 73.1, 5th of 18 - highest-graded Gopher in pass protection with an 81.9 grade

LT Sam Schlueter: 55 of 55 snaps (100%) - Grade of 55.1, 14th of 18 - lowest graded Gopher in run blocking

LG Conner Olson: 55 of 55 snaps (100%) - Grade of 66.7, 11th of 18 - 76.8 grade in pass protection

RT Daniel Faalele: 55 of 55 snaps (100%) - Grade of 67.5, 8th of 18 -

OL Blaise Andries: 51 of 55 snaps (83%) - Grade of 72.6, 6th of 18 - 70+ grades in the run and pass

RG Curtis Dunlap: 33 of 55 snaps (60%) - Grade of 54.2, 15th of 18 - second-lowest graded OL vs. the run and worst in pass pro with a 21.1 grade

OL Axel Ruschmeyer: 12 of 55 snaps (22%) - Grade of 82.6.0, 2nd of 18 -
The snap counts are nice. The PFF grades are garbage at the college level.

Kinda weird to transfer mid season, no? Must not be very happy or maybe other issues.

Too lazy to look it up, but didn’t we have an all conference guard transfer in last year as well? Utah State if I remember correctly, came with Sanford and is redshirting this year… it’s also possible that I just made all of that up.

He has been in the portal before though. Not too hard to go back

Dunlop was instrumental in getting Faalele here and was coming here to be with his back-up QB in Annexstad. I think it is safe to assume Faalele is going to the NFL after this year, but my bigger question is where is Annexstad going or is he going? I am thankful for Dunlop coming to MN, just hope this won't mean others are leaving as well.

They weren't going to rotate someone that plays over 30 snaps a game? No, he doesn't want to be here anymore is more plausible. They've already removed him from the Roster on the website.
I agree Maxy, especially for a midseason transfer.

We can safely say that he will play WAY more in 2020 for the U than anywhere else. He has already burned his RS, so the 4 game thing doesn't matter at all. He plays a ton now, he is set up to be playing a ton next year and it's the middle of the season.

IMO, I think the most plausible answer considering Dunlap's circumstances is that this is not football/playing time related.

As a coach, I would not invite him back to the team. I give people a lot of leeway when they are battling injuries and 2020 was a strange year. I also don't necessarily blame people for having second thoughts about situations, but there comes a time when you need to have people who are "all in". This is the second time in what? 14 months. If he is going to want out in the middle of a season (coming off a road B1G win), I think you're better off letting him go.

I'd be very surprised if Annexstad transferred. His parents are major boosters and he chose to walk on here, earned a scholarship and as far as I know has never wavered.

I guess my point is that this OL rotation strategy hasn't yielded the consistency needed to win games (see Miami OH, BG). My hope is that was obvious in the bye week (self-scouting) and that the change was to establish a more permanent starting OL. If Dunlap was not going to be a planned starter going forward and he already had eye for the exit, all the more reason for him to transfer.

No chance that other's decisions are based on Dunlap's. Faalele is working on a Pro career and if he leaves it's likely to be drafted. Zack and Brock seem to love being part of the program are are likely more interested in life after football than transferring.

I feel like if Zack was going to move it would have happened.

But it's not entirely impossible that he decides one day "you know I got one shot at this maybe ....".

Are you sure about that? I thought Faalele had committed earlier. And Dunlap was the guy that Annexstad gave up his scholarship for so that he could commit? I'm not positive about this.....but I thought that this is how it went down.

Zack convinced both to come to the U.

Wow-I thought he was going to be one of our better guys this year. Big hit to our depth.
Hit to our depth sure, but debatable how big a hit if he has been passed in the starting lineup. We aren't exactly short on offensive lineman at the moment.

We don't know what's happening in his life right now, but it looks like last year he was talked into staying by the coaching staff and/or his friends and family. Perhaps it was a "Well, you're injured, give it one more year where you're able to play and maybe things will be different" type situation and now we're halfway through the season and he still feels like he wants to leave.

Sad to see him go, but I support his decision no matter what the root cause is.

This.

What is most disappointing is I thought our OL would take it upon themselves to rise to the occasion and challenge of blocking for the #3/#4/#5 running back. Maybe more extra effort, perhaps more focus and discipline . Yet here we have one of the troops surrendering before the start of the battle. Sad

You have no idea what is going on in this Curtis's life that is leading him to this decision, so who are you to judge him making this decision?

My mind is all over the board about this and no doubt disappointing. However as Taji34 says, we can't be judging him as we really don't know what is going on in his life. We need to give him a break for now. Perhaps we'll learn more later.
