Week 1 Other Games Thread

Unlike say blackjack the inputs and probabilities probably vary quite a bit and are educated guesses but this article attempts to explain the mathematical reasoning for rarely or never punting.

Give this to PJ.

For sure. But if he says mathematically you should never punt, he is wrong.

mathematically on 4th and 25 from your own 1 yard line…you have a greater win probability by punting. Hell you have a better win probability by taking a safety than going for it in that scenario
Yea but you are screwed either way. Your punter has no chance if you are back that far. They probably get the ball at avg 35 yard line at best. Punting helps a little there because your d hopefully has a few more plays to get a turnover.

I still firmly believe that Florida State is using Tim Brewster's old Special Forces mat from his time here. Even though Brew has left Tallahassee, it's still on their sidelines. Through a couple head coaches now.

The year Brew got there under Jimbo Fisher, it made an appearance, in maroon and gold matching our shades and not quite Florida State's. Clearly visible on TV. And they still have it!

I’m glad Mertz is the Wisconsin QB and not Coan.

YPA (yards per attempt) is a good simple way to measure QB efficiency.

Mertz has a 6.2 YPA in his time at Wisconsin, which is bad. He basically makes Wisconsin the 2nd worst passing team in the conference, and in the past 3 Big Ten seasons only Illinois and Rutgers have done that bad in a season.

Coan is a 7.5 YPA in his career, which is a little above conference avg

Tanner Morgan is 9.2 YPA of course, 2nd in conference history :)

I’m glad Mertz is the Wisconsin QB and not Coan.

No kidding. In 2019, Coan completed 69.6% of his passes for 2,727 yards and had 18 touchdown passes against 5 interceptions. He was terrific against us that year.

Wisconsin has such a great OL every year you'd think good QBs would line up to go there.

And then one does and they pick Mertz instead and sent one packing...

To be fair, I don't know that they sent him packing per se. He had a foot injury and surgery last season. Although he was available to play near the end of the season, they opted to continue with Mertz. He is a graduate student now and maybe he just wanted to go to Notre Dame; it's an institution that still carries a lot of prestige.

Mertz couldn't hold Coan's jock this week. He might miraculously be better within the next 2 years than Coan is now, but Mertz is rightfully taking a beating on the interwebz. Do literally anything against a non bottom feeder B1G team before anointing yourself.

Usually you don't just want to up and leave ... like it's a plan.

You look at these two guys and you got with Mertz?

I think a lot of Whisky fans also liked Coan and wanted to see him do well. Just not this well and not while Mertz is playing as bad as any D1 QB currently.

I had forgotten Jermaine Johnson had transferred to FSU from Georgia. He had a good night.

Phenomenal games: LSU-UCLA last night; Notre Dame-Fla State tonight. fantastic crowds delirious to have college football back, too.

Brian fumbling a reference to a more famous quote there ...

When I heard this I got the joke, but the "retelling" there was an all-timer in clumsy comedy. This bit only works if the reporter says "what did you think of your team's execution?"

Also, John McKay used this line late in a 0-14 expansion season with Tampa Bay, and it doesn't land quite the same with an Irish team that was undefeated in regular season play last year and has now won 16 consecutive regular season games, and 33 of its last 35

Lots of FCS teams played very tough. The talent gap has obviously been closing the past decade, but I'm wondering if the hot start this year has something to do with FCS playing spring football just a few months ago and being sharper. UNI also gave ISU a heckuva game. Montana beat Washington. SDSU beat CSU. USD almost beat Kansas.

The most forgettable G5 team....the Charlotte 49ers beat Duke.

Tulane only lost 35-40 to the Sooners!

Fresno looks like a very solid G5 team once again.

WTF, Indiana?

Maryland beating WV 30-24 doesn't tell me much

#7 Iowa State struggles to beat Northern Iowa....16-10. No worries. A buddy of mine tells me that they always struggle against the Panthers.

Purdue notches a P5 win against Oregon State

The Georgia/Clemson game was a total slog. Knew that Georgia had (probably) the best defense in the nation.....but I figured that there would be some points put up. Without TLaw......Clemson looks like a mid-teens (polls) team.

Montana over Washington. I actually read up on the Grizzley football history a few weeks back. Some interesting stuff. Story here though.....pre-season rankings mean sqaut. Gophers got no votes and Washington was ranked #20.

Notre Dame over FSU in OT 41-38. Is FSU back or is ND just still not an elite team. I'm guessing that both are mid-pack ACC teams. Yeah....I know that ND doesn't play in the ACC (for football).

One of the amazing things to me is that Coan turned out to be a much better QB than Hornibrook after taking over for the Badgers. Coan was a little jumpy (as many inexperienced QBs are) when he first took the reins, but he really improved his junior season and admired his toughness and willingness to take a hit.

Who knows with Mertz. Only a sophomore and Badger offensive scheme is pretty QB-friendly.

Coan looked very composed last night and semeed to be THEE leader out there. He progressed through his reads well and delivered accurate passes. His athletes at WR are far superior to anything he had at UW. He looked great and I'm glad hes living his dream of playing for ND. Especially at Mertz and Chryst expense. Should be a blood bath when they meet in Chicago.

Also, why is Brian Kelly, a coach who essentially killed a kid, talking about executing his team? Not a great look.

And those games were great because they were actually in the team's stadium. These nonconference games are so much more exciting and fun when on campus. I HATE all the neutral site games.

Mike Norvell is a hell of a football coach. He’s in my top 10.
Guy he replaced at Memphis has had a much tougher go of it at VT.

But, maybe they turned a corner this year? Not sure if I trust that UNC was a top 10 team. Guess we'll see
