It took the first Oregon Rose Bowl appearance to get Phil Knight to jump in, and 30 years later we know what that has done. It's a chicken/egg thing -- getting to the playoff for the first time, while incredibly difficult, might be what it takes to get this thing over the hump.

I don't think it's a direct hindrance to a team's performance by itself, but it's probably a hindrance for off-the-field stuff (attendance, awareness, fundraising) which does have an impact.

Well said -- exactly how I look at it.

It's better than it used to be (excluding last year) -- the bowl selection process has rules around not having the same teams in the same bowl games year after year, which is why we started going to Citrus and Outback, not Insight or Music City (though that one's better now).

It's great to be in the position where a loss against a (over the past 15 years) top-half B1G team would be an upset, even if a close one according to the bookies.
