I never worry much about stars/rankings for OL recruits. Seems to be the position w/ the lowest correlation between recruit rankings & actual production. Likely just a very difficult position to evaluate at the HS level.
We all know Burns has a long history of pimping Fleck's free-wheeling walk-on culture. dpodoll is putting the finishing touches on his 8th grade research paper: "Debunked: Ryan Burns and the 247 Composite TE Rankings Conspiracy."
Once that's in we're going to tackle this latest wild Burns...
Reading the tea leaves - if we offered Wednesday & immediately made his top six, I assume there's been some promising behind the scenes activity. Fingers crossed!
Fantastic points - I don't think many people can think more than a step or two ahead, but you've outlined the inevitable long-term result of what would be an extremely short sighted decision by the NCAA. It would be another (and the clearest yet) step towards the demise of the current...
A sad and wild story for sure. I think we often forget that even phenomenal HS athletes are still kids - if you take the time to look, you'll find that a failed adolescent or even young adult was almost always failed by many adults along the way. Personal responsibility is important, but we are...
Thanks for finding some actual data! Lots of unfortunate conjecture in this thread. Also given the hyper-inflation of reported high school 40 times, I think they're all tough to trust. At least until the process of testing and reporting is standardized.
How are you still allowed to post on this--or any other--message board? My sign-up was "pending" for like a week - I assumed that process was to weed out posters like you.
You think it's flat out false that many coaches would leave MN for a power program? I understand your broad point--and I love MN too--but I think that's just wrong.
Agreed - I think those may be the only names I'd worry about. I see him as a midwest guy. And again I think he may be the somewhat unique coach who actually wants to build his legacy at a program without much recent success.
But put another way: the only coach in program history that got a big-time offer elsewhere took it. Again if next year is anything like last year, Fleck will likely be our first coach since Holtz to get a big-time offer from a big-time school. That's when it gets interesting - no one's arguing...
Fleck is a pretty unique brand - you likely have to buy in to his personality, Row the Boat culture, etc. to want to come to MN. You either love it or hate it; tough guy to be lukewarm about.
I'm sure we lose some recruits because of that, BUT we also get big-time buy-in from the guys who do...
To be fair, we don't really have any idea if it's a stepping stone job, because no one's won enough to get a truly big-time offer. I think it's only a stepping stone compared to a true blue-blood program (but so is pretty much anywhere else). And we've never had a coach other than the Holtz get...
I don't have any self-loathing, and I personally love living in the midwest (and wish I was still in MN). But I still think it's fair to say the vast majority of football coaches would prefer a big-time SEC job to MN. It's not meant to be a controversial point. And I do think it takes somewhat...
