There was certainly a bigger gap in the Big Ten between the top teams and the rest. Many of the top teams in the SEC played close games...

The espn/abc viewing experience is also much better than others as well

Plus you go to nearly every sports bar or bar and grill, there's two or three ESPN networks on at the same time.

The first point is what drives the ratings. Most generic sports viewers turn on ESPN and mostly just leave it on that channel forever.

ESPN is still king in television sports and southerners still like CFB more than northerners.
