Alex Keith Commits to Minnesota Thread

Under recruited kid who made a big jump from Jr to Sr year. I suspect we'll see Kill rely on HS coaching relationships and work hard to uncover these types of kids at this point in our program. Like Wedley Estime last year, some bigger schools starting to take notice of him but likely as a plan B. Let's hope he is of wedleys caliber but there is no VT to swoop in and steal him.

Great minds (well, yours is great, mine is so-so) think alike. That's the first name I thought of when I watched the highlight reel.

He would be a project like Therian Cockran, but if both have the appeared ability: Coach Kill could have some nice DE in the near future.

Yeah, especially the part where they said "74 total tackels".

Scout and Rivals tweeting that Kill offered Keith today and are expecting him to commit tonight.

@MattOConnellGI reported earlier today, the #Gophers have offered Missouri DE Alex Keith and he is expected to commit.

@JSchuermanScout Breaking News: Columbia (MO) DE Alex Keith received an offer from the #Gophers today and will be committing within the hour to the #Gophers

Hard to say what this kid brings to the table. At 205 he is a definite project at the DE position and will need to get a lot bigger to play at this level. The intro to the video was a bit overindulgent for my taste but the highlights looked pretty good when the clip was long enough to figure out what was going on.

Assuming he verbals welcome on board.

205 is light, but I really liked his film. We are fortunate enough to have quite a few young DE's, so this kid can RS, sit and get bigger for a couple of years.

When he is a RS-SO: It isn't difficult to see him projecting to be 6'4" 240 lbs.

Dude he is 18! How many kids are 6'3 240 at 17, 18 years old. Typical Gopher Rube to say something negative when everyone else is excited.

I said he could project to 240 in 3 years under college weight lifting.

Not sure if the rube comment was directed at me but I don't think I was being overly negative on the guy by saying at 205 he is a bit of a project.

Some guys can develop and grow into their frame and add significant weight without losing a lot of speed and other abilities. Some guys have a hard time putting on weight while maintaining everything else. Clearly the coaches see something in this kid that tells them they can develop him into a productive player and that is good enough for me. My only point was that at his current weight it is going to take him a couple years probably to get to the point where he is physically big and strong enough to play D-Line in the Big Ten. If that makes me a rube so be it.

I know what you guys are saying about his potential, but every kid that comes into our program right now ONLY has potential and will more than likely not be ready to play BIG football. We don't get the Dorial Green-Beckmans of the world.

So, your anaylsis with this kid is like every other prospect, they need to put on muscle and get in the weight room, WE GET IT. These are HS kids, obviously by the tape this kid has the potential but you dont need to state that he needs to put on weight and get stronger and make negative commecnts about the video, just chill.

There is alot of difference if the kid shaves everyday or 1x a week. The everyday kid doesn't have the potential upside the 1x'er does.

He is 6-foot-3 235 lbs right now, those highlights and the listed weight are from over a year ago.

Welcome aboard Keith. Do the maroon and gold proud!

That's not the case, at all, even for the Gophers. Of course all players are going to put on muscle in college, but even the U brings in kids who are more ready right away than other kids (based almost soley on their strength).

For instance, we played Amaefula right away (he needs to get bigger) but we didn't play Cockran right away, because he REALLY needs to bulk up. It's not a condemnation of Cockran, just the fact that some players need more bulking than others.

For instance, Matilus is a kid who has the size to play right away. Hinojosa is another kid who is strong enough to play right away (by most accounts). It's probably the main reason why Montgomery was RS this season and Wells and Thompson played....strength.

You see a lot of other recruits who were more ready than others based on strength.

6'3" 205 is light for a DE, even for a DE who is being recruited by the U. According to Sonny he has already put on the weight, and it's really not that uncommon to see DE's who are closer to being ready to play (based on size).

Very Nice, I think we can finally sell hope with coach Kill in Dinky Town.

I can see him playing LB. He's hard to block and brings it hard. However, they got him listed 6-3, which really means 6-2. He's fast and looks like a force out there. I don't see him squaring off with a big 6-7 O-tackle though. He'll have to put on 55 pounds (which he certainly can do) but he may be more athletic and effective at 235.

Remember if his 6'3" is really 6'2", those 6'7" OL are really 6'5".

More so Kill played Amaefula right away because they needed the depth on the DL and wanted to RS Cockran not that he had the strength. Kill didn't want to waste a RS year on freshman he thinks will help further down the road instead of playing them during a wasted season. He really wanted to RS Tommy Olson but couldn't due to injuries that is why Tommy didn't play the first 3 or 4 games, but clearly he was our best lineman.

That's why he RS guys like Cobb, Westerhaus, Matilus ect... Kill had just enough depth to avoid playing these guys, but from what I have heard he really wanted too.

A little Birdie tells me that Cobb is in line to get a bunch of carries next year, he might even be the 1RB but more than likely the 2. You can bank on it!

Cobb didn't redshirt. He had 10 carries last year.

Huh?

Tommy Olson played the first game of the season. They may have wanted to RS Tommy in an ideal world, but there were never any plans to redshirt him. He played (mostly special teams), in the first game of the season.
Why? Because he was more ready to play right away than our other FR OL (Bush, McAvoy, McAvoy, Bjorklund).
If your theory that we burn the RS on players who we expect less from down the road, you are arguing that the U liked Tommy Olson less than Bush, McAvoy, McAvoy, and Bjorklund. It doesn't make sense.
More importantly, Tommy Olson played in the very first game of the season.

Cobb didn't RS. He played this season as late as the Iowa game, so he did not RS. Your little birdy might have simply been common sense. Cobb will get a lot of carries next year. Whoever #1 is going to be depends largely on how good Gillum is, and then who wins out between Cobb and Kirkwood. No little birdy is needed to come to that conclusion.

Matilus: I think he redshirted because he played a position where we had/have relative depth. They'd prefer to RS everyone, if they can, they will.
