Recent TCF article: U of M frat row gets ready for TCF Stadium

Thanks for posting that. It was interesting to read.

I'm on the Housing Corporation of my college fraternity and the city of Minneapolis gave us a heads up a year or so ago that they were going to assess $25,000 per house for a street beautification project. However, I believe that is no longer going to happen now that they have moved the planned LRT to Washington Ave. instead of University Ave. However, we're still going to do some work and we have plans to redo a part of our front porch this spring.

The work that we are doing at this point is figuring out game day experiences at the house. We'll probably end up selling parking passes to alumni to capitalize on the fees that the University is charging for parking that close to the stadium. We also will likely do some alumni events like a tailgate before the game but we need to determine whether it will be every week or just certain games. Anytime you have non-members in your house, particularly if alcohol is present, you have to make risk management a focus and identifying who is an alumnus or invited guest and who is not can be a concern. The fraternities also have to be concerned about their public image if alcohol is present because passers by will draw their own conclusions about the fraternities as a whole as they walk along University Ave.

My house is also preparing for these issues come gameday. I really hope that unaffiliated people prior to and after the game do not cause problems but it is likely to happen, so we are preparing for that.

Ahh....if only there was a Phi Delt or Phi Tau chapter at the U......

As I Phi Delt I also wish the chapter at the U was still active or had been recolonized by now. Instead I must sadly pregame at Deke with one of my buddies who is an alum if we're warming up on University.

I got love for the Miami triad.

Interesting comment. I'm assuming you were in one at another school but why the other fraternity?

If GoAupher hasn't figured it out yet....he and I went to school together. I was basically bating him in my post....

Actually I'm pretty spacey today (thus the ton 'o posts from work) and that one sailed right by me (you sneaky SOB! :)) I forgot this was your moniker. I now hang my head in shame...

Purdue has a very active Greek community(around 15% of the student pop, I think) any I have never heard of any problems on game days. Some sell parking spaces, which is fine but I would really like for them to actully get alummi back to campus and host them for a tailgate. Have someone grill some burgers and brats, have some chips, crack a few cold ones then talk about the "good ol' days" but they don't seem to get it.

The house's win because they reconnect with alumii and therefore $$$ and campus wins because a better atmosphere. Pretty simple really.

I would assume that games days on University are going to be pretty close to what it's like during the Homecoming parade. I wouldn't worry too much about it (other than parking issues)...

I really don't know how this would be a bad thing for the frats. It seems like it will improve the whole tailgating environment as they won't have to drive a car all the way over to the Dome loaded down with kegs and eggs, now they can just open the house door. But seriously, I think it will help the gameday experience. It will also give frat alumni another excuse to go back to the old house.

Here's what can go wrong w/ the gameday experience: the U, Panhel, IFC.

I think that Purdue is closer to 60% of the student population is Greek, I know our chapter there is over 100 guys.

And this could potentially be a huge problem for fraternities. Throw tens of thousands of drunk people wandering around campus with loads of alcohol and bad things happen. If your point is from a purely convenience standpoint then sure, it will be better for us, but then again its better for every gopher fan then too, so that is an odd point to try and make. What we are concerned about is the people that come wanting to start problems with or at fraternities. Unfortunately there are people like that out there

No doubt there come risks associated with having lots of intoxicated people on or near the row. However, it is a good problem to have, as it keeps fraternity row relevant for more than the first few weekends. If the U and the Greek system want to look at it strictly from a liability standpoint, they will miss out on a great opportunity to expand the base of active alumni. Whatever system is in place needs to be both family-friendly and alcohol-friendly, while addressing the increased security and wet-rush concerns. Using homecoming as the blueprint is probably the best idea, as it seems to run fairly smoothly. Expecting row to be "dry" at any point before or after a game is ridiculous, even during the first couple of weekends.
