It is the worst season in more than 50 years.

I'm thinking that Bob does go away at the end of this year, but it will be positioned as a "mutual agreement". It will be well-vetted with any incoming recruits. Bob might stick around with another advisory job in the athletic department or something but my gut tells me that this is his last season behind the bench. I have absolutely zero to back that up though. Just instinct.

He'll bail completely and go live up north rather than living in an apartment just to "advise". The program has no use for him so what's the point? If they lose the Cullens, bummer, but it's for the greater good and there was ZERO guarantee the best Cullen would commit here with how much money the big schools will throw at him plus being able to compete for a title for sure.

Based on your usual stance that Bob is a horrible recruiter, I'm surprised you wouldn't think it's WAY MORE LIKELY to get all the Cullens if Bob "bails."

Or maybe I just know how things work in college hockey. Every other recruit is completely expendable by Gopher hockey former standards.

That

That has nothing to do with my point

Speaking of standards, a few years ago I sat next to a guy during a Michigan/Gophers game. Didn't recognize who he was at first, just noticed he had a lineup sheet and a real eye for the game. After I made a comment about both teams 'daring the other to win' because they were playing so sloppy, we ended up shooting the shit the rest of the night.

Turns out it was Jed Ortmeyer. We talked Gophers, Michigan, the Wild, Spurgeon, and what it’s actually like in the NHL. He told me he appreciated that I wasn't ripping on the players like the half-drunk, peaked-in-high-school ass clowns in the rows below us. I understood the game at a high level, but I wasn't pretending I used to play on the ice below. Hell, I got some inside scoop about the Mike Yeo in Houston vs. the Mike Yeo in St. Paul. Let's just say, the scuttlebutt out there under-reported what was happening. Real locker room reality, not message board fantasy.

He shook my hand when he left. It was a great experience—one I’m surmising you’ve never had, and based on your attitude, never will.

I'll never forget seeing in person at the 2002 regional at Yost when Ortmeyer absolutely steamrolled Matt Hendricks when they played SCSU. Like a freight train.....

It wouldn't shock me if bob got another year, although Coyle wasn't afraid to rip the bandaid with Whalen and Ben for basketball, so who knows, be interesting to follow

Bob definitely needs to go, because, ya know, it's hockey. We do hockey here in Minnesota.

What's been going on with our team recently ain't up to Minnesota standards. (maybe I'm more bitter because I just watched Netflix "Miracle: The Boys of '80") God I miss Herb Brooks.

I seriously question Bob’s motivation level and commitment to winning a national championship. He seems to be at a point in his career and life where he is content with the money and to just ride the rest of his time out.

Question: We've always had hockey teams that have many NHL draft picks on them. Do we have less of them this year and next year as we seem to be worse than our previous years' teams?

Worst season in 54 fucking years. Most pathetic retirement tour ever including the WJC which we all knew he shouldn't have been coaching.

Any boos you hear at Mariucci have been earned.

Yes we have fewer this year and we have only one from the first two rounds and he sucks at hockey. We knew this would be a bad team. Bad recruiting.

It's also unacceptable to have fewer draft picks with the CHL players now available.

A realistic chance of this ending up to be the 2nd or 3rd worst season in the 104 years of program history.

13 NHL draft picks on the roster. No first rounders but these kids aren’t scrubs either. To have only 10 wins is an embarrassment.

It has to be coaching. How can we have a worse record than teams like St Thomas?? You can't tell me they can out recruit us!

By the way, I used to love watching you play for WBL!

We are all frustrated with "our" Gopher hockey teams play this season. Sub-par is an understatement. With that said, I'd hold off anointing St. Thomas as Kings of hockey till they play/ beat teams with a pulse.

No one said they were the kings of hockey. Just fire Motzko and St Thomas will be behind us like they should be after Barr cleans up the trash Motzko leaves behind.

3. UND
10. UMD
12. UST
15. uw
16. MNSU
17. Augustana
20. SCSU

38. Minnesota
50. BSU

P.S. The above 9 + DU/CC/ASU would bring back the magic in college hockey overnight.

Citing UST is arguably the worst reason I've seen for firing Bob, of which there are ample good reasons to do so. The Gophers are bad
UST has beaten a grand total of 0 teams projected to make the field (MN has beaten 5). Its like the years PSU racked up wins playing the school for the blind and is the reason you're going to see the CCHA get one team in (again). They had a shot to get 2 had Augie not tanked as they picked up some solid wins at Duluth, twice vs ASU, vs Omaha, twice vs CC, but have no margin for error once again (ditto the rest of the CCHA) because the conference as a whole was ass in noncon again (2nd worst and had a losing record vs the AHA).

The reason for firing him as compared to the CCHA is that this years team would not be running away with the league and instead a few games over .500 (based on games vs the conf and TUC) when most years they'd be near undefeated. To cite UST would be like saying we should've fired Bob in 21-22 because Mankato was good and beat us in the postseason.

On this point, yeah I miss the regionality. We're a niche sport with niche fanbases. There's no juice vs OSU, ND, or MSU and only a little with WI, Michigan and PSU as compared with the old days. I miss it. Even in the years you weren't great, you at least were playing rivals and could "ruin" someone's year. Even if we say take out WI and eliminate them in the BTT, I don't think anyone really is going to care like they used to in the blood and thunder days of the WCHA tourney.

On the last team, 12 teams is too big and I have zero desire to bring ASU with. I think the rest are rivals with us, not so much us with them. Much rather bring with Mich, MSU and keep it at a tight 8-10 so you can play home and away every year.
MN, Mich, MSU, WI, UND, DU, CC (no way you'd get DU without CC), UMD as the core 8 so you have 28 games there and then can play some non-con. Don't really have the desire to drag us down into the pit with UST, Kato, SCSU from a money side and UMD is our compatriot state school. Rivalries come from playing a lot and the games meaning something. It's part of why the UND and UMD games have been much more blah compared to the past imo.

Still hate the B10 for ruining something great in college hockey but even out of the old WCHA there were teams I would've had no problem cutting out of that (AA, MTU for example) to make something better, though I get what you're saying in bringing all the MN schools together as well. I still prefer the arrogant style of that they are not on par from a competitive balance standpoint long term.

I included ASU because:
1. It makes the conference a "round" number
2. There will be a lot of NHL talent flowing through
3. It's an away trip destination. Remember when that was a thing???

Also did that as a favor to keep Augustana.

"Rivalries come from playing a lot and the games meaning something."

Not totally true. Rivalries for the UMN come from:
- Seeing guys you watched locally get "stolen" by other teams and come to Mariucci
- Going to away games (preferably a few hour road trip) to soak in the Gopher hate
- Those teams having good turnouts at Mariucci
- Talking trash at work with co-workers that went to the other schools in the conference

All this died instantly with the Big Ten and it's never been CLOSE to the same. The cherry on top is regional conferences can have something like the Final Five.

To manage a 12 team conference you just need to get creative with divisions or something. It's not that hard.
