DL Xion Chapman commits to the Gophers

Our interior DL pick ups are underwhelming and in the B10 those guys gotta be players. Killed us last year with 97 again being a non factor and 91 regressing a bit over the prior year.
In all honesty I’m not super impressed with many of the pickups. Hopefully some of them can step up and fill some holes.

But, you'd have to think the evaluations are that the incoming are better than the outgoing.
We only lost Perich and Fame for the most part in the playmakers, production category.
We did quantity. We likely cannot afford the top rated evaluations...so hopefully we picked up diamonds in the rough.
The fact we got so many guys is a philosophy....we spread our money out. We are betting we can develop and keep these guys as almost all have two years minimum left to play.
We gotta be better and we were "young" last year....lotta guys back with experience. We absolutely should be better with all these additions...we have almost 50 new guys on next years team

Both "97" and "91" have names.

Continually using numbers is annoying and rather insulting

I don't follow the portal other than for the gophers. Are other teams in our competitive range bringing in more proven players?

I agree with you. I like the top handful of transfers and hopefully those are the only ones expected to start. I don't think players that failed to put up big numbers at lower levels are poised to do much here.

Which players don’t you like?

Additionally, I think it far more likely that the “top handful of transfers” will underperform.

The Gophers seem to have been rather smart in the portal.

I'm not going to call out any specific players before they take a snap for us. I just don't see a lot of players with great proven production at their last stop. If the coaches are getting what they want and able to use them well that's all that matters. It's all very speculative.

An effective Harbaugh-coordinated offense is a little like Sasquatch to me. Some people think if they are patient they will see it in the future. Others will swear to have caught glimpses of it in the past. I will believe in it when it comes up and punches me in the face, preferably several weeks in a row against good defenses.

I’d say that there’s quite a few guys that had good production at lower levels. I’m honestly more concerned about the higher rated guys. As they didn’t really contribute at their last P4 stops.

Is it? Or is it just filling out the roster? Not sure why’d you ever want to leave roster spots empty.

As per the middle of the defensive front, if you can't land a sure difference maker the next best thing is to build up a solid rotation of guys. The DE corps is set and deep. Interior looks to be a bit of a work-in-progress, but there are enough guys to have what looks like a decent rotation.

I went back and looked at the list again. I was forgetting a few of the defensive commitments. I agree that side of the ball has a lot of productive adds.

I'm not as sold on the offense.

I can agree on the offense. However, that could change with 1 good productive OL transfer.

I choose to believe the coaches responsible for evaluating talent know what they are doing. Stats are one set of data, but not the only set of markers they consider.

I get where people would like to see really productive numbers on all the guys transferring in but especially as it pertains to the DT transfers stats don't really tell the story because DT often don't wrack up a ton of them. I like that we are bringing in some DT with nice size. If they can clog up the middle and let the ends go to work they will be well worth the roster sports.

Yep, just don’t get pushed 3 yards downfield on every play and let someone else clean it up.

True to an extent but look for example at 61 Redmond from the Vikes. He makes plays and has been a god send for them. Really good DTs will both hold the line of scrimmage and also make plays vs being invisible on the field and stat sheet ala 97–USAF.

I would have liked a receiver with better numbers also, but maybe the new WR coach will be a difference maker.
Probably have to look at a D2 or FCS guy if you want one that put up numbers, any fbs wr putting up numbers will be spendy. I much prefer guys like Perry Thompson over older FBS guys that have only had okay production. I’d rather gamble on upside over hoping you find your #3 or #4 wr.
