2025-26 College Football Coach Fired/Hired Thread

I feel PJ would be Franklin 2.0 at PSU. They might have to go with interim guy.
They're not going to get the big splash hire they wanted. My guess is that they know they made a BIG mistake. Either have to go with the interim guy or go to someone like Matt Campbell at Iowa State. He'd bring a handful of decent players and probably some recruits with him. Writing is on the wall for guys like him in the BIG 12 conference that don't have BYU or Texas Tech cash. The issue that they've created for themselves is that a guy like Campbell sees them fire a guy that just led a team to the national semifinals and has to be thinking why would I do that to myself. But $$$ talks.

Who are the realistic candidates for Penn State at this point? Would they be willing to hire a coordinator from a P4 program? If not, the list of coaches that didn't just re-up and would be willing to leave is pretty short and unlikely to meet fan expectations. Matt Campbell was mentioned above. I'd add Tony Elliott at Virginia

Have to think they’re in trouble if they hire a coordinator given their recruiting situation. If you get a head coach you probably get some recruits and transfers to come with, but with a coordinator that’s doubtful. Decent chance they’d be DOA.

Agree with the comment about their treatment of Franklin costing them. Gotta figure that the lack of job security makes it an unappealing position even with a raise and all the resources attached.

They’ve also screwed themselves because it seems like they’ve whiffed on a few candidates at this point. Again, not sure if you’d really want to go there if the only reason they’re offering is because the previous 4+ guys said no. And can’t imagine fans or boosters will be happy either.

PSU athletics department masterclass.

Isn't the rumor that Jimmy Sexton hates the AD for treatment of Franklin and is roadblocking things?

Re: Sitake. All things being equal, I'd far rather live in Utah than central PA.

Seeing all these other jobs filled while the PSU job sits open is pretty amazing. And it doesn't feel like they have their guy and are just waiting on his season to end or anything like that.

Will be very interesting to see who ultimately ends up there. Whoever it is will clearly not have been one of their top choices for the role.

Hugh Freeze lol. Though he is sniffing around the Memphis job I hear.

Not sure I'd leave UVa for Penn State unless the pay raise is massive. Campbell might be more realistic since he kind of missed his chance to upgrade already.

there are now rumblings for Tomlin to go there if the Steelers fire him

I was surprised to find out Tomlin is only 53 years old even though he's been with the Steelers forever.

List as of Wednesday afternoon. Penn State is the only Power 4 program seeking a head coach it seems.

  • Penn State, James Franklin fired, 104-45 over 12 seasons
  • Tulane, Jon Sumrall left for Florida, 19-7 over 2 seasons

I can't see Tomlin doing the college thing. If Steelers fire him, and history says they won't, he'll get other NFL offers.
I honestly don't know why any NFL coach would even want to consider a move to college football right now with how screwed up everything is.

Agree. Coaching in the NFL is a very cushy job compared to Div I college coaching, where they work nearly every day of the year.
