Craig Smith

I read this as, he’s not a bad coach but nobody was handing over the checkbook to buy players cause he isn’t one of us. I suspect they probably have a commitment for some NIL money but only if you hire this guy we want. I have no insider info, but I suspect this might be the case.

The big money in that state is going to BYU. That's no secret.

So the best we can do is get someone who just got fired for lack of performance? That’s lateral. I’d keep Ben before doing that.
Not all "lack of performance" are created equal.

I wouldn't be excited about Craig Smith, but I can't see any rationale argument that Craig Smith would be a worse option than Ben Johnson.

Just like St John's and Mike Anderson.

Yeah, don't think he would be viewed as a downgrade but would also be really tough to sell as an upgrade as well and unlikely be to someone that would inspire a big influx in pay for play money as well so if that was already a problem for him at Utah moving here isn't going to fix that.

If we are going to make a move go big. Hire Craig Smith to aspire to a half notch higher? No thanks

I never made that argument. You said you'd rather keep Ben Johnson than go with Craig Smith.

If my options are Craig Smith or a realistic coach my choosing, I'd never pick Craig Smith.

If my options are Craig Smith or Ben Johnson, I'd pick Craig Smith every single time.

If you couldn't sell Craig Smith as an upgrade to Ben Johnson, you should not be in sales.

Could you sell him as someone who will have a ton of success at the U, nope.

Probably should have include significant in front of upgrade in my post. :)

no sold on him.... can't hack it in Utah..

GH would roast him just same

I agree with this but I also don’t see a guarantee he would be better either

I get this example is football and not basketball but there is obviously a NIL backing for Utah sports. So like Minnesota does this mean the NIL backers prefer football over basketball?

I believe that is the choice

Without successful football Utah is in the pac 2/mountain west or whatever that thing is called now

Yes. Because that means committing to mediocre for another 4 years. In which case, I would rather stay the course another year until we decide to go big.

Agreed.

No. When it is time to move on you go big or don't do it. Going incremental means prolonging the pain. I'm not comparing Craig Smith to Ben Johnson, I am saying what the next step should be- whenever we take it.

I would have chosen Smith over Ben 4 years ago- easily.

Isn't this one of the home run hire guys for the board masochists?

Board masochists?
That'd be you and your fellow Johnson bobos. The ones who kept demanding more and more of this shit.

Quick! USAF wants us to dump Ben Johnson so we can hire a home run like recently fired Craig Smith! :ROFLMAO:

I'll bite. There has never been one thing for one moment that has suggested even slightly that Ben Johnson was fractionally qualified for this job or would ever succeed as a head coach at any level, and I include all classes of high school competition in any state of this country. In contrast, Craig was very accomplished as a head coach at more than one institution of higher learning, and there was every reason to believe that there was a good chance of that success translating to a major conference. Utah made a good hire four years ago, and it just didn't work out. Minnesota made a disastrous hire.

You asked.

Looks to me like the board's favorite coach also failed.

My point is that a bunch of the people whining the loudest don't know their ass from their hat.
