Shama: Hoke Fits Profile for U Job Better Than Most

Call me crazy but I still think this is going to be another "Holy S***" hire like Tubby was. I think the coach we end up getting isn't on anybody's radar and hasn't been talked about.

Oh and I also think he's already accepted.

Hope you're right, but 99.9% sure it would have leaked by now if true.

I want this to be true so badly. I doubt anyone's already accepted the job though, Maturi couldn't even keep it under wraps that he was firing Brew after the Purdue game.

At least Shama understands that whole nebulous "than/then" thing...

(dots for idiocy)

But Tubby never leaked. I don't think anybody in the media even knew until it was announced or at least the day of.

Didn't someone say during the Oregon basketball search that the names floated are never the ones they hire?

I'm still holding out hope for Gary Patterson, as unrealistic as that might be.

Not sure how he "fits the profile" I posted his Ball State record previously and it was not impressive (took 3 years to get back to the .500 conference record his predecessor had and 4 years to claim a similar overall record of his predecessors final year). The guy had one big year at Ball State where he went 12-1 (didn't coach the bowl game or would have been 12-2) where his best win was either Navy or Indiana. His second best year at Ball State? 7-6. The year after Hoke left, Ball State was 2-10, the cupboard was obviously bare (all Hoke's kids in school by this time) and he got out at the exact perfect time.

I don't see anything that makes Hoke an appealing candidate.

It's friggen Ball St. man what do you expect. The cupboards were bare because they went 2-10 the next year? What makes you think this, and not bad coaching? How has Ball State been since he left huh?

Because that 2008 Ball State team was loaded with seniors, especially on offense. Ball State fell from #17 on offense to #114 the following year despite promoting Hoke's OC Stan Parrish to HC.

Hoke is also a target for colorado according to ESPN insider. (don't have access though)

I hope you're right. But that would make Maturi the ultimate rope-a-dope magician. Can't see it. Hope I'm wrong.

I cant imagine that we havent mentioned the coach to be yet, whoever he is. Some people have lists 30 people deep. If the hire is not one of 30 guys he will hardly fit the "big name" profile.

I can not imagine Joel Maturi getting up and introducing a coach with a losing record as a head coach and only two good seasons under his belt. Not with all of the talk he has said about hiring a big name coach, a ATUbby SMith hire, etc.

We have to do better

" What Hoke has going against him, though, is he’s never been a head coach at a BCS conference school. And that’s a detriment to his resume because the Gophers minimize the risk in who they hire if they can attract a proven winner from one of the six BCS conferences.

Not convinced? Except for Jim Wacker, who came from TCU and the now defunct Southwest Conference, all of the Gophers most productive coaches for the last 50 years were previously head coaches at major programs. The least successful included Joe Salem from Northern Arizona, John Gutekunst who had been Minnesota’s defensive coordinator and Tim Brewster, a former NFL and college assistant with no head coaching experience." Shama

Two decent years in his whole career. Left the program at Ball State with nothing...that is not building a program. Hoke and Edsall just can't be candidates we really might hire?!

Are you kidding me? You want me to find proof to something a mediocre College coach said over 10 years ago? It was actually brought up at work by others when Hoke said he wanted to stay.

Mason was never committed to Minnesota so I doubt he said he wouldn't leave...
