All 4 6a sections are coaches vote
So each individual coach will seed however they please

I could be wrong - but as far as I know, when it comes to seeding, all sections have a choice of "coaches vote" or using the QRF formula from Minnesota Scores.net.

on their Section Standings pages, Scores.net will indicate which method each section is using.

I could go down a rabbit hole on the MSHSL voting to farm out seeding to a website, but what's done is done. FWIW - I have corresponded with the owner of the site, and he seems like a decent guy. I don't have a beef with him, just with the MSHSL passing the buck instead of coming up with its own system.

but, I suppose it's an improvement from the days when each section would come up with its own points system for seeding. that was fun. some sections would give points for a loss to a team from a larger class; others would not - so it was very inconsistent.

9-player:
New Ulm Cathedral (6-1) at #7 Hills-Beaver Creek (6-0)
This is New Ulm Cathedral's first year in nine-man. They've had the enrollment to qualify for a few years but resisted, partially out of pride and the loss of local rivalries and more importantly, long time head coach Denny Lux's insistence that he'd retire if the move was made.

I think the fact that more schools in the area have transitioned to 9-man made the decision a little easier. A few years ago, a 9-man team in the south central part of the state might have to travel boarder to boarder to fill out a schedule. Not today.

More importantly, Coach Lux seems to have dropped his opposition and is still at the helm. While Cathedral had a tough last couple of years in 1A, Coach Lux has his 9-man team in a familiar position with more wins than losses and well positioned for the post season. New Ulm Cathedral was 1A state champ in 2010 and runner - up in 2006 and has generally had very high participation rates and on-field success. They might be a 9-man dark horse, at least to those that aren't used to seeing them in the 9-man ranks.

There was some discussion a number of years ago about co-oping with Sleepy Eye St. Mary's, keeping the program a private, Catholic school team. St. Mary's has itself seen recent on field success and it also moved down to 9-man a few years ago. But St. Mary's ultimately co-oped with Sleepy Eye public, with its Junior High and JV teams integrating over the last few years before the varsity programs finally combined this year and are having a successful season as well.

Denny is a great guy. one of the most cooperative coaches I worked with during my days in broadcasting. His teams are always prepared and very well-disciplined. in the 11-man days, everyone knew what they were going to run on offense, but they executed it so well that it still worked.

Westonka’s Achilles heal pass defense has allowed lowly Benilde to stay in their game. 20-14 at half.

West over Rogers 28-0 at the half.
Meaningless game for any seeding and Rogers QB left after being hurt. Backup was also hurt according to tweets I saw. Final 28-0

Ranked 1A Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop vs ranked 2A Norwood Young America now in 2nd overtime.

Meanwhile, Westonka did close out Benilde to finish off 7-1.

3 OTs now 48-48. It’s a nail biting barn burner in Winthrop.

how did my "games to watch" turn out?

9-player:
#7 Hills-Beaver Creek (7-0) beat New Ulm Cathedral (6-2) 40-18.

1A:
#2 Fillmore Central (8-0) beat Kenyon-Wanamingo (6-2) 28-16
(upset) un-ranked Adrian-Ellsworth (6-2) beat #10 Sleepy Eye United (6-2) 22-18

2A:
Chatfield (6-2) beat #8 Cannon Falls (6-2) 36-22
#7 (2A) Norwood-Young America (8-0) beat (1A) Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (6-2) 49-48 in OT.

3A:
#1 Stewartville (8-0) beat Rochester Lourdes (6-2) 28-6
#9 Fairmont (7-1) beat #8 Waseca (6-2) 21-0
#7 (3A) Dassel-Cokato (7-1) beat #10 (4A) Princeton (6-2) 48-22

4A:
#7 Rocori (6-2) beat #2 Orono (7-1) 20-16.

5A:
#3 Mankato West (7-1) beat #2 Rogers (7-1) 28-0
#5 Andover (7-1) beat #8 Robbinsdale Armstrong (6-2) 42-7
Chaska (4-4) beat #2 St. Thomas Academy (6-2) 35-34

6A: (on Thursday, 10/19)
#3 Minnetonka (6-1) at #6 Maple Grove (5-2)

------ -----
I saw Springfield (1A) beat Windom (2A) 55-15 on Wednesday. Springfield ran up 560 yds total offense. Windom kept it close early with 2 INT's on defense, and led 15-14 midway through the 2nd quarter, but Springfield scored 41 unanswered points to win going away. 15 penalties in the game - 13 in the 1st half.

Seeding is always interesting.

one that caught my eye was 1A, Sect 3. according to Scores.net, this section used the QRF for seeding.

Sleepy Eye United is the #1 seed with a 6-2 record. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton is #2 at 7-1 and Springfield is #3 at 7-1.

here is where it gets funky. Sleepy Eye beat the #2 and #3 seeds head-to-head, but lost to the #4 and #6 seeds. somehow the computer did its thing and came up with Sleepy Eye as the #1 seed.

I think this comes down to the "tie-breaker margin" that Scores.net uses. when two teams' QRF scores are within a certain range, the system looks at head-to-head; district winning percentage and other factors to determine which team should be seeded higher.

In 5A, Section 3, QRF actually has Two Rivers first (which is a sign it's flawed; even though they are 7-1, given the weakness of their schedule they have no business being ahead of 7-1 Jefferson or 6-2 St Thomas). But Two Rivers was actually seeded fourth behind a 3-5 Apple Valley, which I'm not sure makes sense.

If Hutchinson has 150 kids in the high school who come out for football, and Hopkins has 120 ..... then that proves the enrollment is absolutely irrelevant.

Eden Prairie 29-7 over Woodbury. Woodbury actually had a 7-0 lead, but EP scored 2 TD's, with 1 right before halftime. Then received opening 2nd half kickoff & shoved it down their throats & got a 2 point, 22-7 at that point & pretty much all she wrote.

Section 5 showed pretty well

Centennial over Rosemount
Maple Grove over Minnetonka
Anoka over Wayzata
STMA over Mounds View

Coon Rapids went for 2 in OT and lost 34-33 to Farmington
Blaine lost to Shakopee 55-52 on walk off Hail Mary (3 lead changes in final minute)
Osseo lost by 7 to White Bear Lake
Champlin blown out by Lakeville South

Seeding out at 10am tomorrow

What is up with the Minnesota-scores.net site? No updates to seeding and no schedules for tomorrow night's games. I hate navigating the MSHSL site for Section brackets.

I use the MN ScoreFeed app on my phone. it's used-based, so people post scores in real time as they're watching games.

they also have tabs for playoff brackets, section standings and the AP poll.

and you can choose teams to "follow" so those scores are at the top of your feed.

they cover football, basketball, volleyball and hockey.

I am NOT associated with the site - except for the fact that I know one of the people who is behind it. But I do use it a lot. and it's free to download from the app store.
