BREAKING!!!! Dennis Evans ask for release….

Not sure if this has been said, but Evans wanting to leave is clear evidence of tampering by 3rd parties. It reveals the entire debacle that is NIL and open portal movent. It also is a display by Dennis Evans that he is a person who reneges on his commitment. It speaks adversely to his parents who are responsible to teach their son to make choices and keep those commitments. This also speaks to this generation of young people who want an easy path in life without struggling through adversity. To say I'm disappointed in Dennis Evans is an understatement.
You put a lot of blame on Evans but I don’t see anywhere you mention any responsibility of CBJ or the administration for leading this program in the wrong direction. You think Evans or any recruit should have to be part of a program in a death spiral like this one? Evans wanted to come here but this team hasn’t even been competitive in most games this year. What’s the next step? To still lose but be competitive next year? Evans and everyone else can see there isn’t much hope of being a winning program anytime soon. I don’t fault him for that.

You can allocate all the scholarships you want but if you can’t compete on the basketball court or in the NIL court how / why are kids going to come here. Listening to a podcast by Michael Rand today the had Marcus Fuller on it the relationship between Johnson and Evans was amazing and the gophers still lost him.

The NIL and transfer portal going to make it so tough for bad teams to improve.
I don't think you need money to get decent players from the portal. I don't think Loewe, Stephens, or many of the other players got massive NIL deals. Adding a couple of average wing players would make the world of difference for us.

NIL and the portal should make it easier for teams to be decent.

If wins and losses are your perspective, then, who cares about this? Look, Evans is by all accounts a very good player, but - here - he would have been a very good player added to a roster that already has a very good player at the position. This news is a bummer, but, really, who cares?

Christie. Get Carrington and Henley to continue to develop. Find a PG with the same skillset as Cooper + quickness to break down a defense. All good.

The sky is not falling.

Ouch! What was that?! Something just fell on my head?!

So we'll be all good if the coach that has not been able to do any of the things you want him to be able to do will suddenly find a way to do those things?

The sky is not falling because it already fell. However the only hope we had of an improved program was through a recruiting class - that is gone.

According to EduRank here are the Top U of M alumni. Lets make some phone calls and get that NIL budget going. Sad, (no billionaires?) - but if the University ever made an action movie we got a star studded cast.

1. Brock Lesnar
2. Jessica Lange
3. Ron Pearlman
4. Ric Flair
5. Kris Humphries
6. TR Knight
7. Kevin Sorbo
8. Loni Anderson
9. Yani
10. James Hong
That’s one sad-ass list. AWJr is about to sign what should be a really nice contract in Tampa, so maybe he’ll negotiate a huge signing bonus that he’ll bequeath to the collective.

I've been to every sports venue in town. When gopher hoops is good and the barn is rocking, there is no better ticket in town. NONE
Unfortunately it’s been 25 years since the Barn’s been rocking. I had season tickets since 1988, the years Clem was there, it was the best place to be during the Big 10 season. Monson’s years were tough except when Vincent Greer was there. I was excited when Tubby was hired but within 4 years, his lack of interest was evident and he had sucked what little life was left out of the Barn. Gave up our tickets after 2013, but still live and die Gopher Basketball. I spend 8 months of the year in Tucson now and enjoy Arizona Wildcat basketball but not as much as a good Gopher season. This season has been the worst I can remember. I’m not sure I can invest my time anymore.

He committed.
Now, he wants to renege on his contract. Do that in life and there is either no out or a large fine. His parents are not teaching him any lessen here, except that your word means nothing.

I don't care. You commit, then you're committed. There was clear tampering here.
Clearly you don't care but your opinion doesn't matter. Dennis Evans clearly cared and didn't want to walk into this disaster. Did someone offer him $? Probably, but welcome to 2023.

There are a lot of people with you.

LOL. I'm getting the sense you don't live in real life.

People back out of agreements all the time without getting a large fine. We also could choose to not release him at which point he'd have to use one of his portal transfers.

If Ben Johnson pushed Treyton Thompson out, would you feel this strongly about reneging on an agreement?

You're right, our opinions don't matter. Evans is showing bad character and no one cares. It's endemic of our culture.

That’s true if it is stated in the “contract”which it wasn’t.

It's not even true if it's stated in the contract. All he has done is ask for his release. The U could turn down that request and then he'd hit the transfer portal. Or the U could honor that request. Agreements often end.

A letter of intent is also not a contract.

Dennis didn't do this on his own. Someone tampered. Dennis signed a contract and now he wants to renege. It's pretty clear.
Your opinion isn’t fact, what don’t you get about that? It’s pretty easy for Evans or anyone quite frankly to see this dumpster fire Ben has burning here and not want to jump into the fire.

There is no real repercussion here (besides burning a bridge with Ben and a bunch of Gopher fans). Anyone outside of a Diehard Gopher fan can understand re-thinking your future career based on what’s happened this season. It was probably a mistake to sign with us in the first place, but it only looked worse and worse as the season unfolded. I personally don’t blame him for changing his mind with so much on the line. His future.

How do you push someone out. Can a you take away the scholarship you provided? If so, it is just as wrong. A commitment is a commitment no matter which side it is on.
Izzo tried to push Isaiah Dahlman out. Isaiah sad no and kept playing. That's integrity.

Baylor is another example in the last twenty years. Scott Drew hired after probation set in. First four years were all losing and a couple of them were as bad as this one.

USC had four losing seasons in a row (one of them with 6 wins total) before getting to their current successful period.

Wake Forest was mostly dreadful for 10 years before finding success over the last two years.

Pittsburgh had five straight losing seasons (one with 8 wins) before finding success this season.

All good examples and sadly all coaches with some level of success before they took those positions. Not telling you anything you don't know already, but each with a much more established resume.

It's just like the U can so no to the release.

I will fully admit that my opinion on this isn't worth the bytes of data on the GH server that this post will take up.

But I'm guessing that Izzo's practices and Ben's practices are roughly the same. Like all the DI practices. Like they all lift weights. Like they all stretch.

It's all the other, considerable, stuff.
Builtbadgers said this team has much better practices then they ever did under Pitino 🤔
