Gopher Volleyball 2023 Season

Also don't get addressing the women by their first names. You are not on first-name basis with them. You don't know them personally, and are not friends with them.

That's interesting. But I kind of like it when people refer to them by their first names. Knowing them personally isn't the only thing that might indicate. It also might indicate you're treating them as human beings, not as commodities whose purpose is to entertain us as we root for our favorite teams.

Not sure the status of the badgers senior MB’s but they currently have 4 MBs before they got Booth. If those seniors are coming back then someone will surely be heading to the portal. Imagine Smrek and Booth together 6-9 & 6-7. What a block for the badgers 🥺
Exactly....

Reading elsewhere how Wisconsin fans are upset the way Sheff handled his Grad Libero from Baylor all season and still handling who should play Middle and RS, I am hoping he continues on that path. I agree with them that Smrek should not be playing RS and should be back to the middle...she's a natural in the middle.

Then add that many were pretty upset with the fact that GG their foreign starting Libero should have been replaced at some point in their loss to Pitt. It certainly was not even close to her BEST game. All this while he had the Big 12 All Conference Libero on their bench.

Always helps when the opposing team has all this talent and their HC doesn't use it to their advantage. IMO there are no guarantees Booth will exceed her perfromance at Minnesota this past season.

Wonder if Pedro received a Holiday Card from Sheff thanking him for "the devleopment of their new MB?" Their program was not in need of a MB. Their fans and program can sugar coat it all they want to.

I just feel Booth's transfer speaks volumes about her character and not necessarily in a positive way.
This 100000%.

What goes around, comes around.

In regards to her character, she is a kid.
No, she's not. She's 18-19 years old (not sure, but in that range). She's a full grown adult, and this selfish decision speaks to her character, absolutely.

Likely highly flavored by her father, as well.

Doing whatever they think is best for her career, and not a single additional thought about anyone or anything else.

I'm sorry we gave her the chance to start in the Big Ten as a true freshman. That's what loyalty gets you, these days.

Smrek won't play middle. She's too slow and unathletic.

That's just the facts of life when you're such a large human being.

I’m new to the site, but have been a football season ticket holder for about 25 years. I also follow and support the volleyball team closely. I am dumbfounded by the news. I just spoke with Carter Booths mom before the Northern Iowa match and she told me how much They loved Minnesota. She even invited my daughter and I to come down and meet Carter for picture taking after the match, which we did. Now she transfers to Wisconsin? Does not make ANY sense to me.
A lot of gopher fans are still trying to wrap their heads around this. I'm sure that there were plenty of factors involved, but the one most people will point to is the retirement of Hugh McCutcheon.

Well this is interesting quote "all-around"...Pedro did a fantastic job with Carter from the beginning of the season to the end of it. As an outstanding athlete, you can also give her credit for her development. Her mom and the rest of the family got their wish. But it, apparently, wasn't really want this family was looking for.

I totally agree with another poster, the coaching will NOT BE THE SAME at Wisconsin, nor her playing time.
He was only a volunteer. Who's to say he won't get a call from Sheffield asking him to take a quick trip to Madison before he decides on his next career opportunity?

Nope. I don’t buy it for a second. Weak, convenient excuse.

Elliott didn’t retire at Texas, when Sun turned her back on them.

Would’ve been the same thing here.

I am reminded of a saying my dad used to say:

Never bite at the hand that feeds you.

Usually doesn't work out so well in the end.

She was raw and fairly lost out there in the beginning of the season, but the team stuck by her to allow her to develop. Apparently that wasn't good enough.

Time to get somebody with better character and upside other than just being tall.

Carter Booth was First Team All-Big Ten (one of only two freshmen) and on the All-Freshman Team. I don't think that happened only on account of her height. Wenaas was here 3 years, and no one is questioning her character, so why question Booth's. They were both recruited by Hugh. He retired (from coaching), so they decided to leave. It's their right, and has nothing to do with character. Booth apparently was recruited by Sheff while in high school, so she had a prior relationship with him. I wish they would have stayed, but I'm not going to criticize them if they go to another school where they feel more comfortable.

Wenaas left because she just didn't fit on our roster anymore as an OH and she was never really comfortable trying the switch to OPP. Landfair, Wucherer and Hanson all play the same spot, (although Hanson can also play OPP). She transferred to a program that just won a national title, she presumably will play OH, and it is closer to home. That one felt like a mutual parting of ways and an ammicable split, although I'm still bummed to see her go.

Booth, on the other hand, feels like a sharp stick in the eye. It is not like she wasn't playing, or was buried on the depth chart. She would have been a starter next year. It doesn't even sound like she really thought about it until she went home for break. She knew of Hugh's situation mid-season (the players knew at the start of the season from what I was told). WTF happened? How did something transpire THAT quickly (assuming she left after finals around Dec 15)? Did she even talk to the new coach?

What comes around, goes around. The transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal will taketh away. Just hope she is prepared for karma when it comes back around, because imho the optics look pretty crappy on her part.

Booth comment was strange when she said in the morning she was fully committed to Minnesota and when she went to sleep she knew she needed to enter the transfer portal. What happened during the day to cause such a profound change?

It feels like a sharp stick in the eye only if you let it. I first started following Gopher sports in the late 50's, and believe me, there have been a lot of ups and downs. It took years but I've finally reached a place where I've learned not to live and die with the decisions of young, still maturing Gopher athletes. To criticize them for not doing what I would do seems pointless. Furthermore, it's nothing new for players to transfer after a coaching change. It happens in all sports and has been going on for years. The portal just makes it easier. If Cook is the coach we hope he is, he'll use the portal to improve the Gophers, and if he brings in a star player from another team, I'm sure Gopher fans will welcome her with open arms and not question her character for leaving her previous team.

Tampering by Sheffield? He is known to recruit during dead periods so why not reach out to a player not in the portal that just lost their coach and he recruited previously?

I don't care if a player leaves after the coach that recruited them moves on and I'm glad they can now. This one seems fishy though.

Huh, really? I'll remember that next time someone takes a sharp stick and pokes out my eye.

As Booth just did to every Gopher volleyball fan.

"No no no, guys! Your eye isn't really poked out. Only if you let it!" :sneaky:

Carter Booth: "At the end of the day, I want to compete for a national championship and Wisconsin is doing that."

^^^ that's spitting in the face of every Gopher volleyball fan and everyone on the team this year.

What a classless person. Lexi Sun 2.0

Hope that's how her career goes. Hope she gets boo'ed out of the Pav every time she steps foot in the building and hope everyone cheers every time she makes a hitting error.

Would be great, but guessing there is no proof, nor a single shred of care or willpower in the NCAA to investigate.

After the waters have calmed a little, it is pretty obvious to me, anyway, the goals that Booth and her family have for her. I feel they have concluded the Minnesota Volleyball Program no longer can help her PRESENTLY on that journey.......a BIG Conference Championship, National Championship, USA Volleybal Starter and lastly an Olympic Volleyball player for the USA. Speaking of those goals, I will wait patiently to see how many of those she obtains and how long it takes her to accomplish them.

Dana Rettke's professional journey in Italy has certainly helped her improve her game. I don't feel she was OVERALL developed while at Wisconsin for that journey. I wonder if Sheffield and Company take a different approach with Booth.

One thing I felt was Smrek was so much more effective on the quick set in the middle than Rettke. The latter lived by the slide. But yes, they both struggled to close the block. The same with Booth. I, again, don't necessarily feel Wisconsin, can develop their middles any better than what Booth was her first collegiate year at Minnesota. It is a disadvantage for these extremely tall athletes to move laterally....especially with teams able to run a fast paced offense. Let me add they struggle more with back court defense too, because of their height.

At the end of the day, she was recruited heavily by Sheff and Hugh as a youngin' and she chose Hugh and Minnesota.

Then she used his retirement as an excuse to jump ship, because she thinks Wisc is in a better position to win a natty than Minnesota is/will be.

That is 100% it. End of story. Looking out for #1 and not a single other person. Turning your back on the team that took you in and gave you the opportunity to start as a true freshman in the Big Ten. She would not have started this season at Wisc.

Too many tears spilled over a middle blocker. One who hit negative in the Sweet 16 with the season on the line at that.

College volleyball has always been about left side hitters and setting. Landfair, a healthy Wucherer and Shaffmaster can easily compete for a national title if Cook can succeed in shoring up the backrow via the transfer portal.

People who would so quickly ditch a team after one season aren't going to be the ones you want sticking around anyway. Those character traits are part of everything they do.

Who said anything about ditching the team because of Booth leaving? Or Wenaas, for that matter? We'll replace them both, and move on.
EDIT: you clearly were talking about Booth ditching the team, and that went over my head. Agree with you 100%, and apologies.

Your offense will go absolutely nowhere in college without a strong middle hitting presence. Fact.

Look at the 2021 Gophers for proof. When opposing middle blockers don't have the respect your middle hitter, they can camp out on the pin.

Well, of course you need a threat out of the middle...Arica Davis returns, Calissa Minatee comes in with great accolades and is playing in the high school All American game this weekend. Cook has some scholarships to work with and the portal is open.

The story remains the same, Landfair, Wucherer and Shaffmaster is quite the trio to build a championship around.

Meanwhile, still few teams have the talent depth of the Gophers.

That includes Taylor Landfair, an elite successor to elite Stephanie Samedy who was an elite successor to several others in team history. Nothing has changed.

I believe he was referring to Booth ditching the team after 1 year.

We still a lot of potential even if two of our better players have moved on. I'm excited to see what Schnichels will bring to the table and once we find a solid backcourt, things should start to fall in line.
