I doubt they take a transfer QB unless maybe if someone transfers away. I don’t think it’s necessary either. Don’t really need five QBs on scholarship.
 

I doubt there are coaches sitting on QBs they believe are better and not playing them.

Remember when folks said that about Tanner…

Nobody gets the job handed to them.

Fleck and Simon both played WR in FBS level. That they missed on receivers so much, that is quite concerning.

Ruesse probably doesn’t know anything about the gopher roster.
 

I’m guessing any decent QB heading into the transfer portal is going to a school that needs a starter and that coach has indicated it’s their job to lose.
 


Ruesse and I don't agree often but Athan looks Leidner bad right now and if he's the only option going into next season then the Gophers are in trouble.
 


Assuming that Athan returns next year, I'll predict right now that - at the start of Spring practice, Fleck will announce that it is "an open competition."

and after Fall camp, Fleck will announce that Athan won the competition and will be the starter.

as to whether it is actually an open competition - well, you would have to be a coach - or at least a fly on the wall - to know whether that is really the case.

Fleck has put three WRs into the NFL so far which is pretty good given that he's coached at WMU and Minnesota.

If CRAB doesn't get hurt this year then maybe this is a totally different discussion.

Stupid might be overdoing it a bit. Sure, the wrong decision.

The ball was well thrown. Brockington catches it. Maybe not for a first down, but some solid yards, 4th and short.

Iowa CB played it perfectly. And then the ball deflects off his hand not just up into the air, but perfectly into the Iowa guy's arms.


The decision was wrong, fine. But all the rest of it was the football gods taking a s__t on the Gophers. Per usual

Yeah people clamoring for a vastly different offensive approach probably were not at the game. It was damn cold and the way the Gophers were running the ball you had to keep pounding the rock.

It won't be a terrible move to bring in another QB -- here I'm assuming that Kramer is out, then. So yes, we probably don't want the true freshman from South Dakota to be our #2 backup.


So if Kramer leaves, then they probably have to anyway.

Totally agree on this one - if you can upgrade at QB, I would be up for it. AK is a huge question mark heading into next season and a little competition would be a very smart thing to do here.

Why would you say that with a ton of 6th year players including some of your most important skill positions? This was not a rebuilding year, this was a year to do damage in the B1G with a down West.

Well, 2022-23 is his fourth year in school. Maybe go through spring ball, see how the competition shakes out with AK and the new young gun from South Dakota. Either way, graduate with a degree.

If he ends up 3rd, I think it more than reasonable for him to transfer somewhere. He can play two seasons for another school, if he chooses, since he redshirted in 2019 and then covid 2020.
 

Any transfer that comes in with only promise of open job isn't going to be very good.
 

I'm more concerned about RB and WR next year than any other position on the field. QB isn't a concern for me. The coaches will play the best option at every position. Coaches have done this for over 100 years.

Hoping Evans has a breakout year. He'd be more like a Bucky than a Mo.

I don't know if it is simply lack of carries, or if he hasn't full recovered from the injury, but Potts doesn't seem like he has been able to do much (against anyone with a pulse)?


Wideout, obviously we have a lot of work to do. Brockington and Jackson had a few nice plays vs Iowa, hope we see more of that the rest of this year and next.

Potts has been encouraging the last couple games with his limited touches and I would be comfortable with more of an 1-2 punch (Potts/Evans) like Bucky and Ky last year.
 

Haven't read through the whole thread and assume others have pointed this out... but a star QB transfer would be a) hard to find and b) wouldn't come here unless guaranteed the starter job and c) would potentially alienate AK and Knuth (increasing chances they would transfer). Just don't think it's happening.

Would rather have them get WR, OL, and DL transfers.
 

I truly don't know what we have with Athan yet because we are allergic to throwing the ball.

On face value I agree that we shouldn't just guarantee the job - he needs to earn it. I don't think he's earned it based on his performances....but I have a sneaking feeling that with more opportunistic playcalling and better route running we'd prob be singing his praises.

I’ve been saying the same thing all year for Tanner (and now Athan). There is not a single quarterback who would have consistent success with the way the offense is run.

Like you said- when you have a QB hand the ball off for virtually an entire half and then suddenly call his name to throw (as well as calling on receivers who haven’t sniffed a ball in virtually an hour of real time), that’s a recipe for disaster. And we saw what happened.

If PJ wants to go full service academy mode, he can knock himself out. If that’s the case, why not actually involve the QB in the run game? We had the same frustration with Tanner virtually never pulling the ball on “option” plays. Athan, who by all accounts is a more capable runner, pulled it once all game. At that point it feels like something from the coaches.

My biggest fear is that we’re trapping ourselves into this run-heavy corner and it’s going to hamstring us with recruiting. I can’t imagine any high-level QB recruit looking at Minnesota the past 3 years and thinking “Handing the ball off 40 times in 20 degree weather? Sign me up!”
 

Concerning going to the portal, we could do what Iowa did, bring in a 4th. team tight end. Nothing more.
 



Why would you go to the portal after recruiting AK over the last 4 years?
 

I am not giving up on Athan. He looks like he has the tools to be a modern dual-threat QB.

IF he is allowed to be by the coaches.

that's the issue.

if the coaches keep putting the QB's in a straight jacket, good luck recruiting a top-notch QB to this school. same thing with WR's.
