Spring ball is done and it is a long time until fall. It's a perfect time to play "AD for the day." If you can wave your magic wand, and create the perfect three game non-conference schedule for three seasons... who would your opponents be? Just name three opponents for three seasons. You don't need to designate home or away. Please think like an AD, meaning you have to balance wins/losses, fan interest, etc. You can put Alabama, Georgia and Clemson if you want but is that what you would really do?

Here are mine. Fire away.

Tulane
Boston College

Uconn
Ole Miss
San Jose State

Kansas
Bowling Green (revenge game)

3 places I’d love to see games.
6 programs I’d love to see games against.

Zero games I’d consider unwinnable.
6 games that would be “big” wins nationally (because TN is overrated)

Assumes we start the ACC and PAC-12 games. This is what i would like to see. I hear we have a lot of fans in Arizona (not a bad place to visit and very winnable games).

Georgia Tech (keep Georgia recruits coming)
Arizona
low end team

Notre Dame
Arizona State

Georgia Tech-Southern recruitment-GA pipeline

I'd really like to see the Gophers play Army in Michie stadium. I've wanted to see a game there for some time but I don't think I'd make the trip w/o a compelling reason.

Like the GT angle...

Georgia pipeline and revenge for them opportunity...

We're 1-0 against GT...

I haven’t seen a game there but West Point campus is kind of a pain in the ass to get to as a stand alone

Only “an hour and a half”

But a pain in the ass hour and a half that could turn into 2 and a half really easily

In another universe, where unlike in this one Iowa St didn't accuse white U of Minn football players of literally murdering Jack Trice on the field for being black, it would seem like an obvious rivalry should have sprang up between the schools.

1. Ole Miss, Houston, Washington
2. Vanderbilt, Miami, UCLA
3. Texas, Duke, ASU

I would try to play teams from Texas, FL/GA, California as much as possible and sprinkle in a P5 from the Midwest or East.

NDSU
Texas (Played once in 1936. Anyone remember that one?)
Georgia (Gophers have never played Georgia if my research is correct.)

SDSU

I had the opportunity to attend a game there once. This was in '96 I think so it has been a while. Awesome experience. The stadium is on the smaller side (maybe 40K) and there was a lot of walking up steep hills to get there, but what a beautiful site. We went to see the cadet parade and saw the parachute team come in with the game ball. Helicopters did the flyovers. My only regret is that we didn't go a day early and do the full West Pont tour. In my opinion, it is the best non-Gopher college football stadium (in terms of scenery/atmosphere) that I have ever experienced.

Great question/thread. I went with

Iowa State (easy trip)
Northern Michigan
Colorado State (newer stadium)

Bowling Green (I like the revenge angle)
Ball State (I have relatives near by)
UCLA (Southern Cal..)

Montana State (I like the mountains).
Duke
Kansas

Fun idea.

Year 1
Mercer (we'd be just like an SEC powerhouse!)
Iowa State (my grad school)
UC-Davis (I speak there sometimes)

Year 2
Boise State (at the Smurf Turf!)
Arizona State (brother went there)
UAB (my wife's sorority was good there back in the day)

Year 3
Buffalo (not sure why)
Syracuse (my sister went there)
UCF (I want this at the Bounce House!)

If nothing more than to spread the brand around:
Yr 1
Miami
UTEP
Wyoming
Oregon in the Rose Bowl*

Yr 2
UCLA
Boise State
Vanderbilt
USC in the Rose Bowl*

Yr 3
Pitt
Kansas State
Washington
Stanford in the Rose Bowl*

*Not accounting for the playoff commitments, nor do I really care about the opponent, just get there!

MERCER?!?!? I didn’t know Gopher fans knew about Mercer. I could get behind this matchup. I live 2.5 hours from Mercer’s campus and my daughter is current student and about to be in med school there. I get to one or two Mercer games a year. Let’s make it a home and home so I’ve got easy travel to a Gopher game! LOL

Seriously, Mercer would probably be willing to make that trip north. Played Alabama last year and Auburn this year and prior years. They aren’t afraid to step up. They’ve been north to Army and Yale so they would travel.

• NDSU - so we can put that debate to bed and quiet the sidewalk-pissers.
• UCLA - their cheerleaders in those powder blues...
• whichever team Mike Leach happens to be coaching at any particular time...it's fun embarrassing him.

This is ... oddly specific? :D

Any reasoning here?
Sure. It provides more exposure down south amongst other reasons.

Utah St. - they have sporadically put up some solid seasons as of late. Very winnable and could look good at the end of the season if USU has a good record. It could even possibly be the difference maker that keeps us out of the Guaranteed Rate bowl in the future.

Iowa St. - regional and they have held their own in the Big XII recently. Also, Jack Trice is a fun stadium to go to.

University of South Florida - Home and home. I’d parlay the away game in year three into a fishing and golf vacation. I’d also like to watch a 48 year old Tom Brady still playing at a high level with all the former Gophers on the bucs.

UTSA - They are establishing themselves as a pretty good team, and playing in central Texas gives us more exposure down there. Also, SA has some nice golf courses.

University of Louisiana - Ragin’ Cajuns.

Ok St. - Mullet. A matchup between two top 10 teams to open the season. National exposure.

Western Michigan - EZ-PZ. It’s a MAC team with the PJ angle.

I’ve got some other ideas too. Feel free to send me a PM Mr. Coyle.

Let's give the MAC a 10 year break.

Lot of people saying NDSU.

I don't know. They have a lot of kids every year who feel slighted to not have gotten a Gopher offer.

They get kids like Lance and Watson. It's their Superbowl.

I don't see it ...
