All Things 2021-2022 Minnesota Timberwolves In-Season Thread

Unless the Wolves are complete and healthy, nearly any win is a surprise. Without 3 guards, including their best defensive player and their #3 scorer and assist leader? The result was no surprise. The Wolves glaring lack of depth is the legacy of Thibs and Rosas.

The Timberwolves seem to have a clear matchup problem — elite shooting teams light them up from deep.

Much like Charlotte did last week, Atlanta chowed down on a feast of open triples Monday at Target Center, going 25 for 49 from 3-point range en route to a 121-110 victory.

Minnesota’s lone lead of the game was 2-0.

The Hornets and Hawks entered Monday as the League’s top-two 3-point shooting teams.

The loss was the Wolves’ third straight as they struggle to navigate the most difficult portion of their schedule to date. It doesn’t get any easier Wednesday, when Utah comes to town.

The Jazz currently rank sixth in 3-point shooting percentage.

Minnesota has given up a bevy of wide-open 3-point attempts all season — often to the opponent’s third, fourth and fifth offensive options — as a product of the team’s aggressive, fly-around defense.

The Wolves are always scrambling and recovering, so enough ball movement generally leads to an open triple. But opponents haven’t been able to connect on those open looks for most of the season.

Teams like Atlanta (13-12) almost always will...

The Timberwolves weren’t at full strength Monday against Atlanta, but they do finally seem to be trending in that direction.

Minnesota got Jaden McDaniels and Karl-Anthony Towns back in the lineup, while Patrick Beverley is quickly working toward his return.

McDaniels had a serious bout with the flu, in which Timberwolves coach Chris Finch joked the forward “lost the whole 10 pounds (he gained) all summer, which he could ill afford to do.” The illness knocked McDaniels out to the point where he was in bed for several days and unable to join the team on the road..

D’Angelo Russell missed Monday’s game with an ankle injury. That meant the Wolves were down three point guard options in Russell, Beverley and Jaylen Nowell. That pushed rookie guard Leandro Bolmaro into the starting unit.

Finch said Bolmaro — who wasn’t in the rotation as recently as two weeks ago until Beverley went down — was “really excited” about the opportunity. Finch said the Wolves needed Bolmaro’s size and defensive acumen to guard Trae Young.

This whole time I was expecting greg kinnear. I thought he is from Hastings?

Utah Jazz 60 Timberwolves 59 at the half. Wolves got Beverly back but Russell is still out. Hanging with the 16-7 Jazz for a half is one thing. Pretty tough to do it for a full game.

Blow this thing up.

Completely blow it up.

I'd even have Edwards on the table.

This is 136 - 104

This is losing record

This is no inside physicallity

This is boring

Then why watch them? You thought they'd be able to compete with Utah without Russell? Why? You expected the Wolves to play over their heads and Utah after winning 5 in a row and 6 out of 7 to have a terrible game?

Was surprised they hung with for a half.

Hopefully Sachin Gupta can address the lack of rebounding and toughness inside. Get a 3pt. shooter too. Until then, suggest you look at the injury report before you decide to watch the game.

They gave up 136 without Russell. That would be 146 with Russell. They played the great defensive minded Patrick Beverly tonight.

They gave up 25 threes the other night and 136 tonight. To accomplish this, they didn't have one of the worst defensive guards in the league on the floor.

If you think Russell is the key here, well, I don't get basketball I guess.

Blow it up. Towns and Ant are starting to look totally disinterested on the defensive end again.

And I didn't watch the whole game, I was also watching the gophers lose a big 10 game. I've been watching the wolves/gophers same night losses for decades. It's tradition for me.

Blow it up?

The David Khan approach huh?

You thought they'd win and are angry that they didn't. I thought they didn't have a chance and the loss was expected. Unless they stay healthy and get that bench beefed-up you should quit watching.

A new city will be kinder and more profitable for them. Going the David Khan, Thibs and Rosas approach?

You're convinced that will work here. History shows it won't.

What's your ceiling with this group? .500?

Your Haiku approach to your analysis in this thread is about as bad as your GM abilities.

Howl Wolves!!
See what is offered for Edwards. It would take the farm, but they should listen.

If they trade ANT, they'll be a bigger laughingstock then they already are and any loyal ticket buyers they have now will abandon the franchise forever. I can't think of a worse idea than listening to any offers for ANT. He is everything this franchise needs at this time.

I'm fine listening to offers for KAT, but only to build around ANT.

Yep.

It would have to be a one sided offer, in the Wolves favor, for KAT. What would they get for KAT? Hell look what they got for Garnett who was a much better player. They answer is not much.

They did get Butler. Who got them to the playoffs, but then tore them apart. Now look at the guys that Thibs gave away for Butler. Zach LaVine, Dunn and Lauri Markkanen. Put LaVine and Markkanen on this squad and you wouldn't need Beasley or Russell. Probably would get more than the 47 wins that Butler & Company got us too.

The problem with the "blow-it all up" approach of Kahn, Thibs and Rosas is the "then bring in Free Agents" part. It can't be done here. Free Agents just won't come here to play. Never have and until the Wolves win regularly they never will. Even then it'll be tough.

Here you have to keep any good players you get and build through the draft. Blowing it up just guarantees that they end-up in another city.

Wonder if the trolls will head there with them. ;)

Kat just can't play pick n roll defense. He also doesn't protect the rim. DLO is a max and obviously not worth the money.

When I say blow it up, it is any or all than probably Ant. What could they get for Ant though. I would surely listen.

On the other hand, I'd love to see them get a big in here that can rebound and protect the rim and see what it looks like.

They are back to playing little to no defense though. Im quite disappointed in that. What you are seeing now is what puts them in another city. The ceiling with this current roster is .500 Do you agree?

If they trade ANT, I just hope in return they get a dynamic player who's about 20 years old, a guy who's freakishly athletic, is improving his outside shot, has an alpha personality, is not afraid to call out the "leaders" on the team, a fun personality who engages with media and fans and a guy who has the "it" factor on and off the court to bring some identity to this franchise. Any idea where we could find a guy like that? Once we have that piece, then we can build around him. Until then, let's overreact at a three game losing streak because we never have those.

This is my last year no matter what. I was there last night... I'm done.

Me too. Said so back in #398" On the other hand, I'd love to see them get a big in here that can rebound and protect the rim and see what it looks like."

Your reply ignored that to talk about how much worse the loss would have been without their #3 scorer on the court and how Towns, Edwards and Russell need to go so they can "blow things up"

A trollish tactic followed by an endorsement of the David Khan school of building a team.

This post actually sounds like you're being serious. Maybe a little late but welcome.

You've been WAY more than patient. How many "blow it all up" rebuilds have you been through anyway?

DLO and Towns need to go without a doubt.

You never answered my question. What's the ceiling with Towns, Ant, and DLO.........I'm going .500

What do you have?

And when have we ever blown it up? We've never had anything to blow it up with.

KAT is too soft

KAT is too soft

True and damn frustrating! Though what's he suppose to do? He BARELY touches somebody and a ref blows the whistle. Meanwhile he gets banged around and hardly goes to the line. That alone has made him more "timid" here than he was the first couple of years. Not sure what can be done about it either.

They need him on the court but nearly every time he does try to go old school down low, they call fouls on him and he heads to the bench. Taking his 24pts and 9 rebounds to the bench with him. Now add in the Thibs and Rosas legacy of depleting the bench and Towns is truly in a no win situation.

Oh and a mini-history of Timberwolves trades is on display tonight with Cleveland at Target Center. They are 14-12. Having won 5 of their last 7 coinciding with Kevin Love getting back in shape. Ricky Rubio, Lauri Markkanen and Cedi Osman are also on that team.

- Love went to a Cleveland for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a 1st Round pick that became Thaddeus Young . Considering Love refusing to even talk to the Wolves, it was decent trade for them.

- Rubio went to Cleveland for Tauren Prince. Bad Deal.

- Markkanen was part of that godawful trade with the Bulls. The one that sent him, Dunn and LaVine to Chicago for Butler. After one year a real bad deal for the Wolves. Lauri was part of a 3-team deal last Summer that sent him to Cleveland.

- Osman never played here. He was traded on Draft Day to Cleveland for Tyus Jones. Osman is now playing 22mins a night for the Cavaliers and giving them 11pts 3 rebounds and a couple of assists a night. Since Jones just walked away, could be considered a bad deal though Jones was decent while he was here.

Four guys who are still playing and productively at that, for two guys who are still on the Wolves. Only KAT is productive for them.

Not true. Wolves won that lottery with their own draft choice. They traded that first rounder from Cleve for Thaddeus Young in the same trade.

Thanks. That really was one hellofa convoluted trade and they did draft Towns the next year.

August 23, 2014: As part of a 3-team trade, traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers with Anthony Bennett and a trade exception to the Minnesota Timberwolves; the Cleveland Cavaliers traded a 2016 1st round draft pick (Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot was later selected) to the Philadelphia 76ers; the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers; the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Luc Mbah a Moute and Alexey Shved to the Philadelphia 76ers; and the Philadelphia 76ers traded Thaddeus Young to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
