GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

So now we all get to see every post from you being about how much Johnson sucks for 4 years. What a welcome change from all your previous posts the past few years.
Take a look at the thread of almost every poster🙄

You get what you want, or you get experience. Either give the guy the time to prove himself (and there are some reasons to believe he will), or pronounce him a failure before he takes a breath if for some sad reason that seems more fun. There are a host of challenges to success for any coach here, but many “fans” — who in this case will simply assume all the facts they don’t know about the process, the candidates truly available, the deal terms, the President’s & AD’s goals, or just how Johnson’s alleged connections will help in recruiting — only make it harder.

To be honest, skipped reading 3-4 pages in the middle of this thread. Like everybody, was surprised by the hire. Hope it works out great for the U too.

Would only say that they last "big name" Head Coach we had here was Tubby. Can't remember the circumstances, but it seemed kind of a fluke that we got him.

Now, reading and listening nationally, the Gophers had zero chance to get any "name" coach who had a good job already, or was about to get an offer from a better place. Gotta believe that Coyle had discussions with the reps for some of those coaches. If so with all the talent being produced here, why not give a local guy a chance?

If he makes it great! If he doesn't they at least took a shot at it.

Besides unlike last time we don't have to listen to every yahoo coach in the country try to get a raise by saying "Yeah, I turned Minnesota down!"

Are we to presume that Gates, Smith and Medved didn't even get an interview?

They probably ended up saving money canning Pitino. If the buyout ends up being zero or minimal they will, because Johnson will probably make $1 million/year or so. I hope so, because it appears ticket sales are going to plummet just as much as if Pitino had stayed.
Maybe worse decline. U sent a message. They don’t care about winning and sure don’t care about long time season ticket holders.

I don’t think this is hatred for Ben Johnson. Can’t blame him for taking the job.

The hatred is for Coyle and the administration right now.
Can't remember which former Twins staffer said this "It's not your fault kid, it's the scout that signed ya." That applies here. This is 100% about Coyle either whiffing or jumping the gun.

It was a prisoner of the moment hire to get a black coach because of the George Floyd movement and a delusional thought of recruiting every single MN recruit....Coyle will be heading for the exits in a few years.
I've seen a lot of trash-tier posts from you, but this might just be your crown jewel. Congrats!

I like the hire!
Look back at the past few Gopher head coaches(Pitino, Smith, Monson). All had prior HC experience and not one of them turned out to be good enough to make us a consistent winner.
We've been going down the road of hiring someone with HC experience and what has it gotten us?
Why not make the move to an assistant. It's not like he just quit playing and has been an assistant for only a couple years.
Maybe he turns out to the the next Izzo or Gard of the BIG.

NCAA college basketball: Xavier Musketeers' Recruiting Tracker

2019 (Top 25)

Since Travis Steele took over as the men's basketball head coach at Xavier University in the spring of 2018, he hired a young staff of assistants in Jonas Hayes, Ben Johnson and
Dante Jackson, and together, they've cast a wide net in the upcoming recruiting races.

The first class they compiled in 2019 was ranked top-25 nationally by 247Sports, but that original five-member class is now down to three players because Dahmir Bishop entered the transfer portal after Xavier's trip to Villanova and big man Dieonte Miles has been redshirted for this season.

2020 (Top 15)

When Travis Steele took over as head coach of Xavier, he did so with the reputation as a great recruiter.
The 2019 class went a long way toward confirming that, the 2020 class has cemented it. In locking down CJ Wilcher, Dwan Odom, and Colby Jones, Steele has landed a class that easily top 15 and even hits the top 10 on some lists.

2021

After back-to-back successful recruiting classes, the 2021 class was going to be a smaller class that focused on forwards and centers.
The 2021 recruiting process was different because coaches had to do almost all of their scouting online since in-person recruiting was not allowed due to COVID-19. This also meant a lot of players had to decide where to spend their college careers without ever stepping on a college campus.

College coaches were forced to get creative to find ways to get commits. This meant a lot of Zoom discussions and FaceTime tours of campus and athletic facilities. Xavier’s first commit in the class of 2021 was Cesare Edwards out of Hartsville, S.C., where he attends Hartsville High School. Edwards is 6-foot-10, 205 pounds, and ranked the 91st best player overall and the 17th best center in the class. Xavier was chosen over a list of other schools, including Florida, Florida State, Clemson and many others.

The second commit in Xavier’s 2021 class is Elijah Tucker. Tucker is from Canton, Ga. where he attends Cherokee high school. Tucker is 6-foot-7, 190 pounds and ranked as the 144th overall and the 25th best power forward in the class. He chose Xavier over St. Johns, Iowa, Georgia Tech and others.

I wouldn't take Gard as my head coach.

Amazing to see so many loyal "fans" jumping ship and giving up their tickets this quick.

Everyone demanded a change and now they don't trust the AD's choice?

Imagine that.

It would seem that everyone is resuming their roles from the Pitino era......

Wisconsin fans are ready to run GG out of town and they have had a hell of a lot more success than we have.

John K on KFAN was saying it's about locking the border down...losing in state kids is frustrating but if you're basing your hire mainly on that it's pretty crazy really.

Even if w get in stare kids can they be coached? Developed? How does Johnson adjust in game? Who are the plan B recruiting options when the in state players keep leaving? Because the best ones still will more than likely

No, not you. But there were people saying that they were concerned about Gates for that reason.
I was one. And that was comparing him to Smith/Medved. I'd take Gates over Ben. His assistant resume is more solid and we have some idea that he can coach. I'd rather lose a coach to FSU in 3 years than fire one who flopped because he was way, way over his head.
