The old 'new music' thread hasn't been moved over from the cesspool (i.e., the politics board), so I'll fire up a fresh thread in the pop-culture safe space.

Margo Price has a new LP that finally came out three days ago. She'll perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight (Iliza Shlesinger guest host).

Not so new, but recently discovered by me through The Current’s Sunday morning Americana show is Tyler Childer’s Whitehouse Road. The song makes me wanna drink beer and throw some punches (I’ve done plenty of the former, none of the latter in my days, which is a good thing for me).

Not sure if this is new Music or Old music - but I was surprised to discover recently that Bob Geldof has re-formed the Boomtown Rats and they put out a new album in March - 1st new album for the group in 36 years.

I've listed to a few of the new songs on YouTube and they're OK. Hard to pick up after 30 years and re-capture the same sound and feeling.

still, their 2nd and 3rd albums are truly great in my book. They could do flat-out rockers, ballads and then do something off the wall like (I never loved) "Eva Braun." (which is yes, written from the point of view of Adolf Hitler, discussing his relationship with Eva Braun. Has to be heard to be believed).

Here's something from out of left field, The Regulator by The Dream Syndicate. For those of you who don't know them, they were part of the 60's obsessed bands that came out of LA in the early 80's under the moniker The Paisley Underground. The Dream Syndicate reunited a few years ago and put out two albums that were in the wheelhouse of what they were doing back in the day. On this third release they took a hard left. This is the "single" they released, a 20 minute funky, free jazz trip. Guest Stephen McCarthy of The Jayhawks/Long Ryders on electric sitar.

all right - a Long Ryders reference. "State of Our Union" was a great album. I associate them with what was called the 'cow-punk' movement in the 80's - Lone Justice, Jason and the Scorchers, etc.
bands that combined elements of country music with a more hard-edged sound.

"Broken Whiskey Glass" by Jason and the Scorchers is a great song. I caught them live at the St. Paul Winter Carnival one year on a bill with the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Ironically, I see that the Long Ryders also reunited and put out a new album in 2019. going to have to see if I can find that one.

I gave the new album a go...not good imo.

I have it and would definitely and would definitely recommend it. And yes, they were good friends with and shared bills with The Paisley Underground bands but those bands didn't have the country feel. Here's my favorite off the new album. Complete with black lab!

how new is new?

big fan of synthwave "how do you go from this tranquility to that violence?...i usually take the ferrari"

Rhett Miller was recently on NPR’s World Cafe, giving an extensive interview about the band (27 years! 😳), their new album, his sobriety while playing several songs. I had never heard him interviewed-seems like a really good guy, it was a really good listen:

The Doves are out with their first album in 11 years and their first single dropped a few days ago:

NICE!! Love the Doves. Thanks, I had no idea.
Agreed! Thanks coolhand. I was just listening to Kingdom of Rust the other day. I think that's a weak album compared to the others that I have and it's still solid. Last Broadcast is a great, great album.

Thank you for posting. I've said this here before: in a just world, the Old 97's would be inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Rhett's last album "The Messenger" would have won the Grammy. In the course of a year, he did that album, did an album with the 97's, and published a book of poetry for children. In his late 40s. And they were all brilliant. Who does that?! He does that.

When I was at the Old 97's Christmas show back late last year, some lady I was talking to said to me, "I can tell you're a heterosexual male, but you'd do him, wouldn't you?" 😏

Cayucas with a new release. Haven't listened to the whole thing through yet, but it's very Beach Boys with elements of surf rock, at the same time being same ol dorky Cayucas.

This came out last year, so not necessarily new. But Andrew Bird is everywhere in my life right now. My kids turned me on to this song, he stars in the new Fargo season, and apparently he was in Squirrel Nut Zipper back when they were one of my favorite bands. I may have to take a deeper dive into his solo stuff.

I believe it was last fall he visited First Avenue. I didn't catch him then, and I thought, well, I'll just catch him next time. D'oh! Who knows when we'll get to see anyone again.

I've got 4 or 5 of his earlier solo albums, though I've lost track of him lately. Well worth looking into.

There is a tribute album to the late Ed Ackerson coming. I'll definitely have to get this. Always enjoyed seeing his various bands and he seemed like a good guy, including not caring when I pinched a cheap beer or two from his fridge at after bar parties back in the day.

My buddies, Chatham Rise and Jerry Leftkowitz are on this! The Dandy Warhols... Gonna be a good tribute.

Chatham Rise, huh? I've sort of listened to a couple of their songs on youtube. I've recently discovered The Bevis Frond and CR is one of the bands that popped up on the same channels/you might also like. Didn't realize they were local.

I listened to Bob Mould's new album Blue Hearts twice yesterday. I think it's his best stuff since Sugar. I probably would have said the same thing about last year's Sunshine Rock, but I like this even better.

Sunshine Rock is a great album for sure. I haven't given Blue Hearts a listen yet.

So the new album from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - "Letter to You" - is officially released today. (10-23).

I probably will not be able to pick one up for a few days owing to work and bad weather.

If anyone has a copy, post a review/comments. Interested to hear what real people think.

The big rock critics tend to rave over everything Bruce puts out. My personal opinion is that some of his recent stuff has varied in quality from OK to kind of odd.

the new album is supposed to be a much more traditional-sounding album with the full band involved. Apparently a lot of it was recorded live in the studio with a few overdubs.

anyway - chime in if you've heard the album. a making-of-the-album documentary is out on Apple+ TV - which I do not subscribe to.

Still boggles my mind that I first heard Springsteen in 1973 when I was a Freshman at Augsburg. Bruce and Dylan are my Twin Towers when it comes to music. I like a lot of music, but those two are #1 and #1-A.

What was your take on Western Stars? I thought it was pretty strong and enjoyed the live/soundtrack version a little more with the increased role of Patti. I was glad I saw the movie in a theater.
