Sure, if he’s actually interested in coming to Minnesota.
 


I have already had a few thoughts about Beilein (anything to distract from the debacle of today):

1. How much does the "Slugs/Thugs" comment hurt him?
2. He's 67 years old, is that simply too old to start over again?

He's a fantastic X's and O's coach who might actually entice Oturu to stick around to play in his offense. He could potentially hire Luke Yaklich back (now currently at Texas) to be his lead assistant possibly with the understanding that Luke gets first crack at the job when Beilein retires.

Not sure what his options will be based on his age and how his Cavs tenure has went, but you cannot deny his B1G track record: he missed the tournament once time in his last 9 years at Michigan and 5 of those 9 seasons were better than Pitino's best B1G record of 11-7. 5 Sweet 16 or better performances in the big dance as well.
 



Get it done. Even if he can only give us 5-6 years, it's worth it.
 

Do whatever it takes to hire him if he's fired from Cleveland. We couldn't be this fortunate.

A little more on Beilein. His last contract with Michigan was for $3.8 million per year which would have tied him for the 11th highest paid coach in college basketball this year with Bruce Pearl (per this list:https://watchstadium.com/college-ba...uyout-database-for-2019-20-season-10-24-2019/). Richard Pitino, for reference is the 40th highest paid coach this year with total compensation of $2.1 million (buyout is just $2million by the way). Somehow Greg Gard is paid less than Pitino at $1.9 million.

Just looking at the list, to get an established coach to move it's probably going to take in the neighborhood of $3 million a season with a mid-major type guy coming in at $1.75-$2 million. Personally, I'd spend the extra million if an established guy wanted the job...but Beilein might take closer to $4 million.
 



Does anyone know how much he is currently being paid? Also, is the rest of it guaranteed if he is fired?

If yes (his family will have more money than they can spend) maybe he would be interested in getting back to teaching players his fundamentals. I thought the NBA was an odd fit for him as that type of gig doesn't easily lend itself to being the same type of coach as you would be in college.

Also maybe he'd like the challenge to have taken 2 different programs to the top tier in the same conference. How often does that happen? That would be pretty cool accomplishment IMO.

Fleck was a mid-major coach who has worked out better than most Gopher football fans could’ve ever dreamed.

Just saying ... it wouldn’t surprised me if Coyle stuck with that formula. He may not. What he will certainly do, is consider all the options available at the time and select what he thinks the best overall option is.

Wait, what!? I was going to ask why in the world anyone would think he'd come here to coach, but now I know the mindset we are dealing with. Personally, I'm thinking another coach rumored to be in his last season, Gregg Popovich. GET 'ER DONE COYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I meant make two programs within the same conference Top Tier - the Wolverines had some mighty lean years after Fisher left - my bad. Please feel free to forward me the hospital bill for your cardiac event.
 





Actually, I think Coyle has done a pretty good job of identifying and nailing down some good coaches and without the aid of an extended search committee, too. Fleck was a home run, Motzko is starting to look that way and Whalen needs a little more time but I think that will turn out just fine, too.

I say give Coyle a shot at this one, too. He just might be able to land us another HR hire, but I do not think it will be that hard to get us someone better than what we have at the very least.
 

If Coyle decides to make a change, Minnesota will not get John Beilein, though that would be the home run hire of all home run hires! That's not happening.

If he decides to make a change, I would be curious to know if these guys are on Coyle's short list (in alphabetical order):

Dane Fife (Michigan State assistant)
Bobby Hurley (Arizona State head coach)
Niko Medved (Colorado State head coach & Dave Revsine look-alike)
Scott Nagy (Wright State head coach/former South Dakota State head coach)
Craig Smith (Utah State head coach)

I would surmise his short list includes at least a couple coaches that have built programs at multiple stops.

As an SDSU alumnus, this hurt my soul a little bit.

I think those coaches would fit better for what we need. We need coaches who would prioritize the 2nd tier Minnesota kids and have a system they can flourish in. There are so many players in the last 2 classes that weren’t prioritized because we were focused on the unrealistic guys

South Dakota State?

Keep in mind that Tim Miles would still be an upgrade over Pitino. Maybe not a home run hire, but a uniquely talented and energetic guy.

The names a lot of people here and locally wanted the past couple hires--Brian Dutcher, Eric Musselman, etc.--have since gone onto meteoric success and would now be considered untouchable. You get one chance to catch those rising stars, and we've effed up those chances.

We effed up those chance because we had some horrible athletic directors. Teague was the worst hire in history and anyone who spent a minute with him would know how inept he was. Now we have a tireless worker not into attention or splash. He hires substance and has built authentic connections.

The worst combination: inept and also arrogant. They wanted to show how connected they were, so hiring someone with local roots was out of the question. Their arrogance cost them the chance to bring in Saunders, which would have worked, and you couldn't have foreseen his illness.

I supported hiring Pitino, but when you make such a speculative hire, you have to be able to cut bait when it first becomes clear that it's not going to work. That's why those situations have low salaries and buyouts. It's essentially an audition. If that's not what you want, hire experience.

We need a coach who can prioritize and SIGN 1st tier Minnesota kids.

I agree we might not be the favorite, but I'm curious why you think we'd have no shot? We're likely to be the only opening in the B1G and even if one of the Blue Bloods (UNC perhaps) comes open, it's not likely they would target him due to age. There has be some appeal to come back to the B1G. If his options are Wake Forest, random SEC job, random Pac 12 job, I'd give us as good a shot as the rest.
