B1G Game 11: Gophers Host Rutgers (2-2-20)

Sometime we can make quite a list of unusual occurrences that seriously impacted today's game:
Banked in Threes
Taiye getting fouled on a desperation three.
Rutgers screwing up the advance the ball timeout
Rutgers thinking Kehinde should be shooting rather that Taiye (which was what I thought at the time.
Rutgers turning the ball over on the inbounds over and back.
The intentional elbow.
Anyway it would be a long list.

Also, not knowing the status of never-players Cummings, Sconiers and Ross, with Brunson in the locker room for (most of) the second half, am I right that when Masha A fouled out, that left the Gophers with a grand total of five eligible players?
That appeared to be the case. There was some discussion on the bench when Powell picked up her fourth. Maybe Tomancova or Sconiers could've come in to stand under the basket?

Ouch! Scary thought.

I did not watch the whole game. What happened to Brunson?

Congrats to a hard fought win going for two wins in a row!

They need for players to get off the MASH units. The two Iowa kids came with previous HS injuries. I hope they can be serviceable players.

If Pitts and Whalen can mend fences and get Pitts back, that will be just fine with me.

The Gophers need more than a five player rotation. What sort of injuries do Sconiers and Cumming have?

nobody has any clue what's going on with Ross, Cummung or Sconiers.. sure would be nice to know if they are red shirting or what?!!? but I've been asking for this since the middle of non conference..

Breathe a sigh of relief, as Diva breaks out of her mini-slump, shooting .500 including 5-9 from deep. Also, her defense on Guirantes was quite good. Held her to .278 shooting.

Powell and Scalia shooting 1-7 from deep was a little scary, especially with no option to sub in Brunson in second half.

They seem to practice and participate in half court shots.

Tomacova injured as well?

Great game! Got some much needed breaks to make up for some of those turnovers.

I think a case was made to start both Bello sisters. The paint defense was sooooo much better.... instrumental in this win down the stretch.
Interesting: Combined stats of T. and K. Bello ...

Minutes: 67
Points: 24
Rebounds: 26
Blocks: 6
Steals: 2
Assists: 3
Fouls: 4 (and neither had any fouls at half-time)

And we won’t talk about turnovers since the whole team was bad in that department.

Should be pretty obvious that Cumming and Ross are redshirting at this point, Ross dresses out but its gotta be for an emergency situation only(if Brunson is out awhile we might be at that point). Sconiers seems like shes behind the Bellos and Tomancova on the depth chart.

No, just T-ed up. I heard the rumor, might have been a second elbow to her head as well, but I didn’t see it.
She got tripped towards the end of the half and went down hard, not sure if her head hit the court or not but she got up slow.

Some crazy numbers: Minutes Played and +/-:

49:10 Hubbard -1
47:27 Powell +3
46:25 Taiye Bello +7
45:23 Scalia +7
21:58 Adashchyk 0
21:15 Kehinde Bello +2
18:22 Brunson -8

Good game for the Gophers. Bad game for the heart.
Pitts was in the house for the entire game, btw, not too far from the Gopher bench.
I believe I've seen her in the concourses at each home game since she entered the transfer portal. Who knows if there is any deeper meaning to her presence. I am assuming she is still going to classes in the semester that started January 21, but have no way to personally confirm that.

Waiting for the post game quotes to be posted; but, here's probably the best one: C Vivian Stringer on Taiye Bello:

“She does what she wants to on us,” said Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer, who has watched Bello accumulate 41 rebounds in the past three games between the two teams. “Bello was a grown lady out here today.”

Really painful watching those 26 TO's today but the Gophers played gritty today. Powell is finishing more of her drives and Bello was a beast on the boards . We were bothered by their full court pressure and Powell was letting the shot clock get down too low before running plays on too many possessions. It was a confidence building W. Go Gophers !

Congratulations Gophers, hard fought tough win. Bello telly balled out today. By the way Superbowl is boring.

And T. Bello with 15 made free throws.

Not sure what the per-game record is, but guessing Banham holds it - perhaps in that 60 point NW game.

Powell a perfect 10 of 10 from the line.
Partially answered my own question from the Recap.

With this game, Taiye takes 2nd place all time in free throws attempted. And ties for 2nd place all time in free throws made. But still don’t know who’s first in either. Wasn’t Banham’s 60-point game as she only had 2 FT in that one.

Her 22 rebounds is a new record for her. To match that, you have to go back to an AZB playoff game.

Read the Recap Notes, they’re very interesting.

ALSO WE must like playing Double Overtime thrillers on SuperBowl Sundays..

4 years ago was Banham 60 point game..

also 4-0 in Gold jerseys in our last 4 games

Technically speaking, although we tied at 11 assists each, we “lost” this game in every other major statistical category except one ...

Stat RU MINN
FG% .352 .321
3FG% .313 .259
FT% .800 .769
TO 17 26
STL 12 6

The only major statistic we won was rebounding, with Rutgers 43 and Minnesota 50.

We also won the minor statistic of blocks, 6 to 2. And Rutgers had more fouls, 26 to 19.

Rebounds win games. And blocks and foul shots don’t hurt either.

Technically it wasn’t a technical.

So, you think they haven't noticed it before?
It’s not like they’d make her a big part of the offense. She’d mostly just help with the defense and rebounding.
