Media Prediction Thread: Minnesota at Penn State

Who is this Yarina gal and why would she choose 32? Talk about a weird number.

The only possible scenarios are, a safety or a botched snap on an extra point, that's picked up and run in anyway.

What about it's 31-27, PS just scored td and botches the PAT that gets returned by the Gophers for an extra point. That only counts as one point I believe.

There is a much greater number of possible scenarios. Perhaps you meant likely?

How about it is 30-27 After a Minnesota FG to take the lead with less than a minute left. Penn State returns kickoff in end zone to get stuffed on the 5. The Gophers sack for the safety and win 32-27.

Every score is possible except 1. As in 14 - 1. Although someone did predict PS scoring 1 in the prediction thread.

Likely it could be but plausible is probably a better word. I was thinking in terms of situations that occur at least occasionally.

Check Bielema's PAT "card".

Many ways to come up with 32....

A blocked PAT that is run back the other way for a score is worth 2 pts.

I'm no rules expert but I thought if it's a regular PAT goes the other way= 1 pt.
If it's a TPC attempt= 2 pts.

I openly admit that I have no clue on this one.

Naw it is 2 either way. 2 points is up for grabs on all those plays. 1 if you kick, 2 if you punch it in.

Devers surprises all by playing and has 16 strip sack safeties, yet gets beat out by an Michigan player for defensive player of the week.

32 points.

I think it is possible but unlikely to score 1 point.
From the NT Times:
Among the tweaks to the N.F.L. rules this season were several to extra points. The one that got the most attention is that the kicks will be attempted from the 15-yard line to make them a little more difficult.

Less noticed was a change to the safety rules on extra points and 2-point conversions. A safety is now possible for either team and will be worth 1 point. Rule 11-3-2-c states, “If the try results in what would ordinarily be a safety against either team, one point is awarded to the opponent.”

In the past in the N.F.L., if an extra point was blocked, the ball was declared dead if a defender got hold of it. Under the new rules, he can try to return it, possibly all the way for a touchdown, which would be worth 2 points.

Perhaps a defensive player recovers the ball in the field of play, and while returning it he retreats into the end zone and is pulled down there. That will be a 1-point safety for the kicking team.

This has happened, though rarely, in the college game, notably in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl, when an Oregon extra point was blocked and a Kansas State player was tackled with the ball in the end zone. Oregon was awarded a point.

Black Shoe Diaries chimes in:

PREDICTION

Penn State 27, Minnesota 20

I think this one will be a lot like the Pitt game with Penn State struggling to stop a powerful rushing attack but being able to counter effectively on offense. Against both Pitt and Michigan, the Lions’ defense stiffened up in the second half, so I’m hoping they get to that point sooner in this one and keep the Gophers from literally running away with the game. If that happens, there should be enough opportunities for the offense to score... as long as it avoids the costly turnovers that spelled doom in Pittsburgh.

Go Gophers!!

College Football News

What’s Going To Happen?

This is where the Gophers start to open some eyes, and this is also when the James Franklin hot seat discussion kicks in full force.

As always, it’s not going to be aesthetically pleasing, but Minnesota will be effective with a balanced offense that’ll run amok as the game goes on, while Leidner will be maddening with third down conversion after third down conversion.

Minnesota will win, setting the stage for a showdown against Iowa next week – win this, and the Gophers are this year’s version of last year’s Hawkeye teams.

Penn State vs. Minnesota Prediction

Final Score: Minnesota 34, Penn State 30

According to ESPN the spread is two and a half in favor of Penn State.
While I don't think we are as good as Michigan, I do believe we can win by a touchdown.
35-28 Gophers

All 4 Athlon predictors pick Penn State.
