@GopherHole: Dave Mona said he thinks 90% chance that Tracy Claeys will be named full time #Gophers coach within 5 days.

Mona likely knows on this. I like the move so long as the buyout is very U friendly.

It is not like he cost's a lot of $ per year. If he was making 3-5 million is one thing to worry about the cost but at 1-1.5 it is really no big investment and the new AD could replace him in a year or two if he/she really wanted

Might as well make it official and keep the recruiting going now as opposed to 8-12 weeks of wondering what is going to happen

I think he mentioned a 7 year deal? Did I hear that correctly?

I don't see what choice there is if the admin truly is going to wait for a new AD to be named. You really can't go thru the last few months of recruiting without a coach.

I sure as the heck hope you didn't hear that! That would be just plain stupid. 5 years at the most, 4 years at the least. But what about those that said relax, and that this is a public university and there's a process and they have to conduct a search??? So how could this be??? :)

Agree that a 7 year deal would be nuts (which probably means that is exactly what is going to happen). If they want to give him a lower end Big Ten deal for 4-5 years with a low buyout then that would make sense, but anything more then that prior to a new AD being hired would be insane.

not sure what the hurry is.

The amount of years may not be as important as the $$ of the contact. A million a year for seven years would be a good deal.

Yep. I don't see the investigation being finished and an AD being hired before February. That could cost you an entire recruiting class. I'm on board with giving Claeys the gig with a low buyout in case things go bad.

I disagree. For recruiting purposes I think there should be a pretty big sense of urgency. All my biased thoughts on hiring Claeys aside, for the immediate future hiring Claeys quickly makes a lot of sense.

Claeys will come cheap. If he bombs, the new AD will have his or her's crack at a new Coach.
A new AD may not want to hire a new Coach right out of the box. Neck on the line before the furniture is delivered.

Don't know enough about claeys to say whether or not he is a good head coach. Just can't see "jerry kill's" assistant for 20 years being a huge draw for recruits. This is gonna make a significant setback in recruiting. Hopeful that our recent successes(allegedly) get us some success on the field to bridge the gap until Tracey gets some of his own name recognition.

I'd take him over a TE coach who is a great recruiter.

Same.

Point?

I'm guessing the point is that some still think Brewster was a good recruiter at MN. I don't, but many do. So I suspect the point was that if Brewster could recruit here, so can TC.

I like that there's no hype. We have a pretty good idea of what we are getting. Let's face it, if Kill didn't have the medical issues, but wanted to retire and gave the U advance notice, a transition plan to Claeys would be ideal. We've just pushed up the timeline a bit.

If it keeps Sawvel here as DC...then I am in. Sawvel is a proven recruiter, superb DB coach and worth holding on to.

So what will be reaction in Virginia if Bud Foster is named coach this week? 34 year assistant. Never HC.

I want to see this staff operate for a full season without Kill.

In case you didn't hear, Frank Beamer announced he is retiring after this season so there is another open coaching position.

The key is the staff as a whole. Most of the recruits are coming because of the relationships with the assistants and recruiting people, not just Jerry Kill. I don't know if he will be great or terrible, but without a permanent AD, I don't know if we will do better right now.

Gutey 2.0 on the way.

My worry as well. I was all Gutey back then, thinking it would keep going. Then Holtz's whole recruiting class switched to Notre Dame and they won a title. We got nothing but the a few years before the Wacker disaster.

Well the obvious is that this class won't all follow Kill. Just get it done. I'm too fricken old to go through another rebuild. With all of the vacancies even now whoever we get is going to probably be a bigger gamble. 19 seconds shouldn't label a coach as a "failure." We're going to lose some of the recruits anyway but at least there's a feeling of still moving forward. A long drawn out process will seem like a big step backward.

Kill isn't going to Notre Dame. No worries.

That seems unnecessary, but it's all about the buy-out $. The # of years is meaningless (see Brew's contract extension signed months before he was canned.)
