For far too long, gender issues have plagued the University of Minnesota’s athletic department. Now, in the wake of Norwood Teague’s necessary resignation, the university has an opportunity to chart a new course for athletics — one that fully embraces Title IX, empowers women in athletic administration and creates a work environment in which both women and men can do their jobs without harassment or bias.

What will it take? Start with an exceptional leader, one who will work tirelessly to heal the wounds left by Teague as well as the scars still visible from a long list of gender-related messes at the U since the 1972 passage of Title IX, the federal law meant to protect people from gender-*based discrimination in education programs and activities. If the best candidate to take over for Teague is a woman, so much the better.

University President Eric Kaler’s No. 1 goal for the search process should be to come up with a pool of well-qualified candidates from across the country that includes women and minorities. Although there are too few women leading major collegiate athletic programs today, there are plenty of worthy possibilities for that pool, assured Patti Phillips, chief executive of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA).

“We’re talking about a cultural shift here,” Phillips said of the steady but slow progress that women administrators are making in college sports. “The same things are happening in corporate America.”

Of the 350 NCAA Division I schools, just 31 have a woman serving as athletic director, according to the NACWAA. And among the 120 programs such as the U’s that comprise the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), there are nine.

Women face two major obstacles in climbing the ladder, according to Phillips and others: The notion that they cannot possibly understand football, and the belief among some search committees and university leaders that men are better fundraisers. We suspect a just-us-guys mentality is at play with both objections.

An athletic director does not need to understand how to stop the spread offense, but he or she must have the business expertise and management skills necessary to oversee a major football program. The fund*raising claim is similarly bogus. In Minnesota and elsewhere, women are flourishing in for-profit and nonprofit roles that require the kind of credibility and relationship-building that serve as a foundation for successful fundraising.

It’s also worth noting that two of Minnesota’s Big Ten peers, Penn State and Rutgers, recently turned to women to lead their athletic departments in the wake of scandals. “I do think women have a way over time of coming in and fixing things — in all parts of our culture,” Phillips said.

The U needs to repair the culture in its athletics department, and already prominent alumni, boosters and sportswriters are floating names of potential candidates. Interim AD Beth Goetz, a talented and experienced administrator who deserves consideration, is the only woman we’ve seen mentioned to date. We’ll add one more simply as an example of the kind of talent emerging in the ranks of female ADs: Eastern Michigan University’s Heather Lyke.

Before taking over at EMU in 2013, Lyke worked as a senior associate athletic director at Ohio State University, where her duties included, at one time or another, strategic planning, NCAA compliance issues, budgeting, revenue generation and public relations.

She was hired at OSU in 1998 after serving as assistant AD for compliance as well as being the senior woman administrator at the University of Cincinnati. Lyke was a two-time captain and Academic All-Big Ten honoree as a softball player at the University of Michigan, where she received her degree in education. She later earned a law degree from the University of Akron.

As female ADs at FBS schools, Lyke and Sandy Barbour at Penn State and Julie Hermann at Rutgers are leaders in what Phillips believes will be a new era for women in athletics administration.

The University of Minnesota should hire the best possible candidate to run its athletic department. If the school ends up joining that new era by choosing a highly qualified woman, it will have taken a key step in dismantling the old-boys’ network that’s run the show for too long.

Why not hire the best person instead of making a political statement. Typical Trib stumping for the political correct police. See Reusse had his typical nasty stick it to the U's mens teams column again . The reason I will not give that rag on red cent. Beth Goetz seems to be a capable choice. If you want to change the culture of football and basketball paying the bills how about just making the taxpayer pay for it all. Let's how that works out for college sports.

"Gender issues" have never "plagued" the U. I call BS.

No kidding. If anything women's athletics has probably been more emphasized at the U of M than most other B1G schools. Shoot they even had their own women's AD in that twit Chris Volez for many years. This editorial reads like nothing more than typical liberal b.s. grandstanding and playing loose with the facts, imo.

Because we shouldn't pick an AD based on gender? Is that a good answer?

My God! Calling the kettle black? Of course! This is Minnesota, we all know thats how the PC crowd rolls! The real truth is this position is about power! You know who wants power don't you? There is several reasons Minnesota has basically sucked in Men's FB & BB since the late sixties, the program's always have one arm tied behind their backs! Other schools don't try to be everything to everyone like the U. If they want to hire internally , Dan O'Brian should get the job! Don't hire a AD because of a dirt bag. If you do, you are giving him more power then he ever deserved! Finally, I would actually like to see a University of Minnesota grad get the gig! I don't care if man or women, just be a M grad!

Hmmm, let me get this straight. Don't limit your search based on gender (which I concur) but do so based on being a graduate of the U. I have a degree from the U, should they hire me? He!! no! How about the only thing we limit ourselves to is getting the best person for the job.

This is so typical of Minnesota and the Strib - politically correct feminism. MN needs a dynamic male AD with ties to the larger community, hence a good fund-raiser. it would help if he played football, too, whether at UM or another top level program.

Would she be able to serve as Athletic Director without leaving the kitchen? How is she gonna cook?

It sounds like people want to put on the same blinders that caused us to pass up Charley Strong and hire a coach that missed his calling as a used car salesman. I want the U to go out and hire the best AD ever stereotypes be damned! If it happens to be a woman fine!

Yep. Biggest joke ever was when Voelz was around and the women's programs defined themselves as "Ms.", not U of M. Even had the "Ms." on the Pavilion. That was so embarrassing coming from one of the Big Ten's flagship institutions.

There's probably no B1G school that has gone more overboard in trying to be politically correct than the U of M.

Aren't there 128 FBS schools now? Not 120 like listed in the article?

This^^^^^^

Guys, throttle back the testosterone. The "GD liberal, politically correct" StarTribune is not saying they should hire a woman, they are just saying that the U should be open to it. Take off your 'Merica pitchfork nation goggles once in a while.

So we can all eat your PC milk toast?no thanks. And yes, it should be a U grad who knows the history & issues so we don't have to repeat years of failure!

I think a google search would even out the "history and issues" gap pretty quickly. Frankly, I would prefer an AD that has proven they can get it done in the big leagues to one that graduated form MN. We need to stop being so ridiculously provincial. Go for someone good and do a thorough BG check. Don't do stupid things that limit the pool.

I know this will be difficult for some of you to take, but the U of MN is a left-wing university on the same footing as UW-Madison. Not only that, but the Athletic Department has proven to be further left of center than Madison and Barry Alvarez. Let's face it...the reason why so many UW grads move to the Twin Cities is because it's a bigger pool of left-wing commies than they had in Madison. Welcome to the city of Voelzengrad!!!

Nope, they are basically calling for it. If they are so concerned about women why not also be wondering about black canidates? It's all about the harassment with Teague and appeasing and championing a feminist agenda,.

Would like to think that we are in an age where you would hire the best candidate for the job regardless of race, gender, sexual preference, religion or political leaning. Just don't hire anyone from Wisconsin for goodness sake.

It's worth noting that the strib rather than recognizing the below facts, chose to write an editorial that essentially implies we should hire a woman just because it's the right thing to do which is an insidiously patronizing form of gender bias all by itself.

#1 U of M had a woman in the #2 spot (puts us above most B1G schools in gender equity)
#2 When Teague was out, no hesitation naming Beth Interim AD assumption was made she was best suited to take on those responsibilities, gender was never brought up as a barrier.
#3 When announcing a search to fill the AD no gender specifics were mentioned (i.e. no leaning towards male only candidates to fill the job).

We are less intelligent by having read that response. So why don't you just move to Wisconsin, or better yet the SEC country.

I don't care if it's a male or female, just hire best person for job....

if a Female who graduated from University of Wisconsin can get the job done, give her the job

"Gender issues" have never "plagued" the U. I call BS.

Yeah, I kept reading ahead for an actual "long list" to be given. Nope.

...as well as the scars still visible from a long list of gender-related messes at the U since the 1972 passage of Title IX

Actually it's because there's more job's in MN. Having more fortune 500 companies well do that for a state

No one is moving to Wisconsin to be CFO of Wally's Bait, Tackle, and Liquor store

This is the correct answer.

An African-American, woman, and Hasidic Jew walk into a bar. They're celebrating being the Star Tribune's recommended final 3 candidates for the Gophers' AD position.

An African-American, woman, and Hasidic Jew walk out of a bar. The two guys are making sure the woman gets safely into a cab, because she told Norwood Teague she was single.

Unless I missed the U's "women and other minorities need not apply" press release, I'm not sure what the purpose of this piece was. The U should consider a woman, just like they should consider any other human being who may be the best candidate for the position.

If you had read the very last paragraph you would have seen this:

'The University of Minnesota should hire the best possible candidate to run its athletic department. If the school ends up joining that new era by choosing a highly qualified woman, it will have taken a key step in dismantling the old-boys’ network that’s run the show for too long.'

Re-read that first sentence please. The author clearly states the U should hire the best possible candidate.

Yep, and that is in part due to Minnesota's so-called 'left-wing' culture, i.e. highly educated, progressive, good schools and so forth. Let the flames begin.
