Bo Ryan retiring? - UPDATED: Bo intends to coach one more season, then retire

Add another bullet to Tyus's resume:

Drove Hall of Fame coach to retirement.

The issue with hiring a non Bo man is you have to accept a few potential years of rebuilding assuming a potentially significant change in style.

Yep, that's all part of Barry's decision. I think he'd be a fool not to at least make a run at Bennett, but I've heard nothing but great things about Gard.

The statement Bo made makes it sound like Gard is the replacement.

One of the biggest reasons I've hated Wisconsin sports was because of Bo. With that being said I respect the heck out of him. He's an unbelievable coach. Good luck in retirement, Bo.

I agree. And hopefully Gard isn't a pompous $!@k.

What I heard is him not wanting to step on the AD's toes while still publicly registering his opinion and boosting his guy.

It's useful to remember that Les Steckel was Bud Grant's handpicked replacement. Legendary coaches can be wrong about these things.

B1G losing arguably its best coach and one of its all-time true characters. In the mold of Bobby Knight, Gene Keady, and Jud Heathcote. ... always entertaining whether you love him or hate him.

Not really, unless you consider DC part of the territory which it really isn't. And in the immediate area they have to compete with VT, VCU, Richmond, etc. Not to mention Duke and UNC on a much more frequent basis.

Wisconsin is probably a slight upgrade. A lateral move at worst. It comes down to if he wants to come home, and/or it's easier to win in the B1G. Even with the last two years, it will always be an uphill climb against UNC, Duke and now Louisville and Syracuse.

DC is an hour and 15 minutes from Charlottesville, and the DMV is one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. Also, 2 hours away in VA Beach/Hampton/757 is another national recruiting ground (headlined by Boo Williams' AAU program). Georgetown considers the VA Beach their recruiting territory (it's about 4.5 hours from NW DC) so much so it scheduled a H&H with ODU and used it as a reason to block VCU from joining the Big East back when they defected from the Old BE.

UVA is in a great recruiting location, with the ACC pedigree. There's enough talent in the area that Winning recruiting battles against UNC/Duke/UL etc... Isn't a big deal. Going from that to Wisconsin is not a "better" recruiting situation. He is from Wisky though, so I wouldn't be surprised if he bolted.

So do we build the Pitino statue out of gold or platinum when he sweeps the Badgers in Bo's final year?

Tony Bennett will never coach at another school after UVA.

And HIS wife is from the south, the age of his kids, Charlottville is nicer, smaller, not as liberal, better school, better facilities and it is his program not someone else's

If you don't like Wisconsin basketball, this is about as good a development as you could hope for. Program in limbo for a year, recruiting in limbo for a year, and unproven assistant likely to take over. [Granted, Gard could end up proving to be a good head coach but I'll take my chances with him over a guy like Tony Bennett].

I've learned to never ever expect a Badger downfall. Consequence of being younger.

DC/Baltimore is definitely within Virginia's recruiting territory. It's about a 2 hour drive. And I wouldn't say VT, VCU (sans Shaka), and Richmond are much to worry about recruiting-wise. Duke and UNC recruit nationally not locally. So they'd be going up against them no matter what.

I understand that, but by that logic, Chicago is in Wisconsin's recruiting territory. It's far more Maryland and Georgetown's turf than UVa's.

The problem is that instead of just competing against Duke for the Tyus Jones's, you have to compete with them for the Royce and Rodney Williams's as well. And for the less heralded guys, you do have to compete with VCU and VT. It's a good job. But it's not perfect. And the admissions issues can be a thorn as well, which is one reason Tubby turned it down.

So do we build the Pitino statue out of gold or platinum when he sweeps the Badgers in Bo's final year?

In an effort so save funds for the practice facility, I think they'll just dust off the unfinished Tubby statue in Joel Maturi's basement and modify it.

I'm thinking of Tim Brewster's offense, 2007. We couldn't get that lucky, could we?

And of course Pat Reusse tweets this and it's retweeted by ESPN baseball analyst Buster Olney. He really needs to make his tweets read more like sarcastic jokes if that is his intent.

Apparently team stream is now also showing Pitino as a Badgers target for 2016. Way to go Pat!

It is. Bo has recruited the Chicago area quite a bit. Ever heard of Frank Kaminsky?

Tony Bennett doesn't seem quite entrenched yet at UVA. If Bo Ryan retires right now and they are able to pry Bennett from Virginia, that would be a really good deal for them. Bennett is going to be a superstar coach for DECADES.

Personally, I'd like to see Bo retire and replaced by somebody like Steve Yoder or the dozen other coaches they've had during their mostly irrelevant existence.

I saw Barry Alvarez hanging out with the UWGB coach most of the BIG hoops tourney in Chicago last year. Obviously Tony Bennett would be better.

UWGB coach Brian Wardle went to Bradley unless you're talking about Linc Darner
