All Things Pitino rumor mill thread

Lets just get this out of the way you hate Pitino and it really doesn't mater how he acts or what he does you are gonna hate him. Hahaha the same Doogie who in the afternoon on Thursday said Carter Coughlin wasn't ready to make a decision yet only a few hours later Carter committed? I don't put a lot of value into what that Iowa St. lover Doogie says anymore.

Never really been a big fan of Doogie. About a year ago I asked him something about when he was wrong on a gopher football topic on Twitter and he promptly blocked me. It was even a dickish question/comment. Oh well, I think it is all for the better.

Why would you take a job, play with the other guys players who don't fit your system real well, then work your fanny off to get a solid recruiting class for the future, only to bolt for another rebuilding job before your first full recruiting class arrives?

You might do that if you felt staying was riskier than leaving and the new location provided better opportunities for building a winning program than the current one.

Teague needs to put his stupid east coast villa 7 love fest bullsh!t to the side when he's making this next hire (whether that's in a month, or a year or two).

What Minnesota coach has Teague hired through Villa 7? Pitino was not a Villa 7 guy.

If Richard and Stan are competing for this job, I bet a lot of money they would take Stan. He is a very good coach and a veteran one. They have already done that young coach thing once.

I don't know whether you're speaking in generalities, but if you're speaking specifically about Alabama, it's not a step down.

It may not be a step down , but you can't call it a step up either. It would be , at best , a lateral move.

historically second or third best program in their conference, vs a perennial bottom half team.

Based on what? They haven't been good for any sustained period of time since Wimp Sanderson. Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas and Missouri are all better jobs for sure. Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and LSU arguably are as well. The only thing that even makes it a lateral move is $$ and possibly practice facilities.

Richard Pitino is not slimy. He might still turn out to be a job hopper, but that itself would not make him slimy. If he were slimy, he would have found a way to reel in one of those 5-star athletes they were romancing, by hook or by crook.

This Pitino hire was an excellent hire - fairly speculative considering his inexperience, but not high risk either. It was an opportunity for both parties. He still shows a great deal of promise.
I'm sorry, but this post is excessively reasonable and does not meet our GH inflammatory level standards. Please restate this in the form of an insult or incitement to drama escalation. Thank you.

They were pretty good under Mark Gottfried for the most part. They also have 5 players who played in the NBA this year vs. Minnesota's 1. Playing in the same conference as Kentucky and Florida probably tends to suppress the winning percentages of everyone else a bit.

If Young Richard leaves, it will only be for a better situation for him and his family and or a significant pay hike. I do not see it happening. If he goes, I have confidence in Norwood to bring on a good young coach. Pitino was not Norwoods, first, second, or even third choice. The Minnesota job has potential to be a very very good job. However, currently it is on the bottom of the conference. To stay only on potential would be a mistake if you did not fully believe this program can be a perennial winner. Let's face that fact as it is a difficult place to win. How can Iowa,Iowa State, NDSU, Norther Iowa, Wisc win on a regular basis and Minnesota not? That is the mystery that is beyond any coach. We can never forget however that this is the B1G and if someone can win and compete here, they will stay for a long time, ala Bo Ryan. Young Richie still has a lot to prove and if he can move to a warmer climate and get a pay raise, all the power to him. I don't see it but we will see.....Doogie is very well connected.......

if I'm reading the data correctly, second most SEC tourny champs and total SEC basketball wins and third most SEC regular season champs.

this was in response to "at best a lateral move" UMinn vs Bama and not about the best current BBall schools in the SEC

Bama might look a little more like rebuilding rather than building

I didn't like last winter, so I almost moved to Boston.

None of this is a mystery at all. Iowa had the worst coach in the Big Ten five years ago and went 7 years without an NCAA tournament appearance. They haven't won a NCAA tournament game since 2001. They now have a coach who is good but probably not great. Other than the fact that their coach is much more experienced, I don't see why Minnesota can't be competitive with them in the near future. Iowa State made a great hire: a former NBA and ISU player who is a genuinely nice guy and has a great recruiting strategy. Wisconsin hired a hall of fame coach. A program can get lucky like that once in awhile but Wisconsin didn't have much success for the decades before that. We hired a big name coach 8 years ago but, unfortunately, he was on the downside of his career.

Northern Iowa and NDSU play in less competitive leagues. Northern Iowa is having its best year in history but the average UNI team isn't any better than the team we had last year. And as far as NDSU, don't you think Minnesota would have had a much better record in the Summit League?

I have it on good authority that Pitino is the head coach of the Gophers, and Pitino will coach the Gophers next season.

Oh, I also heard Gopher Warrior is a moron.

Can anyone confirm?

To be fair Coughlin actually told Ryan Burns that he wasn't going to decide until at least a couple days out the same day he committed. CC says it was about 11:00 when he was getting his lift in when he decided. Thats not Doogie's fault.

Ah. Well, based on that criteria (assuming it's right) the Gopher football job is one of the top 3 in the B1G. Better than Wisconsin, PSU and Nebraska for sure.

Alabama is a football school that hasn't made any major noise in decades with a fan base that cares 10x more about who the 3rd string QB is than anything that happens with the basketball team. You won't see any great candidates lining up to go there unless one of their football donors can be convinced to write a large check.

If Rich took the Alabama job, which I would find surprising, it would mean that he really wanted out of here, not that he was moving on to a great opportunity.

No one has said that Alabama is a great job or a great opportunity. It's at least as good as, if not better than, Minnesota. I doubt that Pitino would leave for that job, and doubt even more that he'll be given an offer to do so.

Sorry, I tried.

Agreed - and it would be a significant slam to his career to have to admit he couldn't hack it.
This is the opportunity to develop the humility that Dad and Selection Sunday have in mind for him.

While it is troubling if Richard already wants to leave, I don't think he actually will as that would mean Alabama would hire him and I can't see that happening.

I would hate to see Richard leave. A strong 2015 recruiting class and good position with 2016-2017 MN guys would be lost
